After numerous debates and secretive disagreements, the Golden Globes made their comeback in 2025 with a fresh face as host. The event unfolded on CBS and Paramount+ on the 5th of January at 8PM Eastern Time, Sunday evening. Nikki Glaser took charge as the event’s moderator.
As a cinephile, let me tell you, it was quite a triumphant evening for Netflix! Their productions, such as the critically acclaimed “Baby Reindeer,” took home multiple awards including Best TV Limited Series and Best Actress in a Limited Series. The remarkable Emilia Pérez also shone brightly, winning accolades for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Non-English Language Picture, Best Original Song, and Best Supporting Actress. However, the epic film “The Brutalist” stole the show, taking home the prestigious Best Picture – Drama award, as well as recognition for Best Actor and Best Director. What a night of unforgettable cinema!
In the TV categories for musical or comedy, as well as drama, the top honors were awarded to shows “Hacks” and “Shōgun,” respectively. These shows also bagged three acting accolades for actors Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Anna Sawai, and Jean Smart from “Hacks” took home Best Actress. This year, the Golden Globes seemed to favor their preferred choices by giving out many awards.
Alongside traditional categories for top films and TV shows at the redesigned Globes, a new award titled “Best Cinematic and Commercial Success” has been introduced. This seems to be two distinct categories, yet somewhat related. The winner of this year’s award was Wicked, which was also in the running for the actual Best Picture prize but missed out on that one to Emilia Pérez. However, considering its larger overall cinematic and commercial impact, it still took home the prize.
Here is the full list of Globe winners this year.

However, I must mention some other noteworthy contenders like “Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story”, “The Penguin”, “Ripley”, and “True Detective: Night Country”.
Each of these productions offers a unique and captivating storyline that leaves an indelible mark on viewers. But if I were to choose one, it would be “Baby Reindeer” for its compelling narrative and exceptional execution.

In my perspective as a dedicated film enthusiast, I’d like to highlight the exceptional performances in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture. Other notable mentions include Yura Borisov in “Anora”, Edward Norton in “A Complete Unknown”, Guy Pearce in “The Brutalist”, Jeremy Strong in “The Apprentice”, and Denzel Washington in “Gladiator II”. Each of these actors delivered a performance that added depth and richness to their respective films. However, it was Kieran Culkin who left an indelible impact on me with his captivating portrayal.

The Most Absurd Golden Globes Nominations
‘Girls! Girls! Girls!’ (1962)
As a cinephile, I’d say the IMDb rating of 5.6 for this film feels like it could be swapped with another similar Elvis-in-Hawaii movie, ‘Paradise Hawaiian Style’. (The A.V. Club puts it perfectly as “Interchangeable”!)
‘A Ticklish Affair’ (1963)
I’ll admit it: I have never once heard of this movie.
‘Dear Heart’ (1964)
From Wikipedia: “The film received little attention.” Sick Golden Globes burn, Wikipedia.
‘Paint Your Wagon’ (1969)
Among the most renowned musicals ever made, it’s said that Eastwood found the production process incredibly grueling, an experience that spurred him to take up film directing on his own. Interestingly, it was also nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Picture – Comedy or Musical category.
‘Earthquake’ (1974)
Was ‘Earthquake’ more like an entertaining (and, considering the time, quite technically advanced) disaster flick, but not really up to contention for Best Picture? Exactly.
‘Reuben, Reuben’ (1983)
In fairness, I would give the reuben sandwich a Golden Globe. It’s a terrific sandwich.
‘Crocodile Dundee’ (1986)
Here’s an informal and engaging way to explain the concept of ‘Crocodile Dundee’:
“Imagine a movie about this rugged, charming Aussie bloke living in the Outback who’s also a bit of a city slicker. He carries a sword as a knife, has a pet crocodile, and can handle any situation with his quick wit. That’s Crocodile Dundee for you! Oh, and it was such a massive hit worldwide that they made more than one sequel – something unheard of back then!”
This explanation should pique their curiosity enough to ask further questions, rather than thinking it’s a prank!
‘Dick Tracy’ (1990)
While there may be varying opinions on whether ‘Dick Tracy’ is excellent or subpar, let’s find common ground: regardless of its quality, it is undeniably neither a comedic nor a musical production. The Golden Globes seem to have disagreed with this consensus, though.
‘Home Alone’ (1990)
Macaulay Culkin’s expression says it all.
‘Honeymoon in Vegas’ (1992)
In fairness, this might be the best film on this entire list. But still.
‘Nell’ (1994)
Instead of writing what I’d originally intended, I find myself captivated by the poster before me. It’s hard to believe such a creation is genuine!
‘Pret-a-Porter’ (1994)
Among Robert Altman’s films, it might be considered one of his least successful productions, and arguably one of the poorest films released in 1994 – yet it was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Picture.
‘Men in Black’ (1997)
I suppose the first ‘MIB’ wasn’t that bad. And the theme song was pretty catchy.
‘Still Crazy’ (1998)
I don’t know much about this one — but I do know it was 1998’s answer to ‘The Full Monty.’
‘The Producers’ (2005)
Both the initial version of ‘The Producers’ and its Broadway adaptation are hilarious. It might have been confusing for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when they were deciding on their votes.
‘Bobby’ (2006)
Check out all those fantastic actors featured on that billboard! What an impressive ensemble. It’s almost as if they could win a Golden Globe for their performances.
‘Across the Universe’ (2007)
At least they didn’t nominate ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.’
‘Nine’ (2009)
This is one I bet the HFPA would like to have back. And probably Daniel Day-Lewis too.
‘Alice in Wonderland’ (2010)
As a cinephile, I must confess that the 2010 Best Picture – Musical or Comedy category at the Globes was quite underwhelming, arguably the weakest award lineup in film history. The only shining gem among them was ‘The Kids Are All Right,’ but the rest left me rather unimpressed, such as ‘Alice in Wonderland.’
‘The Tourist’ (2010)
…‘The Tourist,’ which looks like a fake movie poster you’d see in a Ben Stiller movie…
‘Burlesque’ (2010)
…‘Burlesque,’ starring Cher and Christina Aguilera…
‘Red’ (2010)
….and ‘Red,’ those were considered by them as the top five comedies and musicals of the year. However, ‘Toy Story 3,’ ‘Easy A,’ ‘Greenberg,’ ‘Four Lions,’ and ‘The Other Guys’ weren’t among the nominees for these categories.
‘The Ides of March’ (2011)
The poster was definitely Golden Globe worthy. That’s about it.
‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ (2012)
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association simply could not resist HOT SALMON FISHING ACTION.
‘Into the Woods’ (2014)
Critics are particularly fond of director Rob Marshall. After all, it’s not every day that someone can bring a nearly forgotten movie genre like musicals back into the spotlight and earn nominations for a Best Picture Award in the Musical category.
