D4 Enterprise has brought the classic MSX game Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II to the Nintendo Switch as part of their EGG Console collection. You can download it now from the Nintendo eShop in most regions, including the US, for $6.49.
Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II was originally released for the MSX in 1987, and it was the final version created for older Japanese personal computers. However, this isn’t the first time a classic Xanadu game has come to the Switch. D4 previously released a version based on the 1985 PC-8801mkIISR version, which followed the original X1 release. They also ported a version of Revival Xanadu: Easy Version, originally from the 1995 PC-9801.
Below, you’ll find the official trailer, screenshots, and details about the MSX version of Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II.

Your quest centers around defeating a powerful red dragon that dwells in a dark realm. To do so, you’ll need the legendary Dragon Slayer sword. The key to finding this sword is the Crown of the King of the Spirits, and that’s where your adventure begins. Let the journey start now!
Originally released in Japan in 1987 (and first launched in 1985), this side-view action RPG is the newest installment in a long-running series. Players embark on a quest through 10 stages to defeat the King Dragon. The game world features towns with shops and roaming monsters, though monsters will disappear once defeated.
Battles begin when you encounter a monster, transitioning to a combat screen where you can attack with weapons (by charging) or cast spells. Winning fights rewards you with treasure chests containing items or money.
Your character doesn’t have a fixed class; instead, you earn experience in both warrior and mage skills depending on how you fight. Weapons, armor, and spells also gain experience with use, becoming more powerful over time. Because monsters are limited, experience is too, so careful planning is essential: will you focus on melee combat or magic? Effectively managing both your character and your equipment is crucial for success.
Can you overcome massive bosses like the Kraken, Kartikea, and the Silver Dragon, and ultimately defeat the King Dragon? This Japanese PC classic sold an impressive 400,000 copies – a record that still stands! It’s a truly groundbreaking game.
The re-released MSX version includes small improvements, such as icons for equipped items, reflecting its later development. Many fans prefer this version, making it a welcome addition for Xanadu enthusiasts!
