1985 PC-8801 release of Mugen no Shinzou II gets ported to Nintendo Switch via EGG Console

D4 Enterprise has brought the classic game Mugen no Shinzou II, originally released on the PC-8801 in 1985, to the Nintendo Switch. The game is available now worldwide on all Nintendo eShops for $6.49.

This is the second game in the series to be released on the Switch, following the first game’s launch last May. The series, known as “Heart of Dreams”, consists of three titles, meaning only “Mugen no Shinzou III” remains to be ported to the Switch. Currently, D4 Enterprise has only made the original 1990 PC-8801mkIISR version of the third game available on Windows PC through its Project EGG platform.

Below you’ll find the official gameplay trailer, screenshots, and details for the Mugen no Shinzou II port. Please note that while descriptions are available in English, the game itself is only available in Japanese.

Having claimed the Heart of Illusion, the warrior had returned from the land of the dead – the Mugen Realm. The world before him was a stark contrast to the gloomy Mugen Realm, full of the vibrant beauty of life. But as he looked closer, he realized something was off – the details weren’t quite right compared to his home.

“This place… it’s not the land I know,” he thought, a seed of doubt forming in his mind. Still, the fresh air and vast blue sky were a welcome change, lifting his spirits.

“The Mugen Realm was a poison compared to this, its air thick with a demonic taint…” he mused, reveling in the feeling of being alive again. But his moment of peace was shattered when a shadow passed overhead, followed by a terrifying roar. Instinct, honed by years in the Mugen Realm, kicked in. He instantly drew his sword, eyes fixed on the sky. And there, unbelievably, soared a colossal dragon, easily fifty meters long, breathing fire.

Released in Japan in 1985 by XTAL SOFT, this role-playing game continues the story after the hero escaped the Mugen Realm. Instead of returning home, they find themselves in a new world called Elder Einh and must begin another quest to find their way back.

Like the first game, you explore from a top-down perspective and battle enemies using a command-based system. This time, however, you’ll encounter enemies as symbols on the map, allowing you to avoid fights if you choose.

Players can create parties of up to five characters, selecting from a variety of professions like Hero, Brave, Noble, and Sorcerer. The game is also known for its creatively named spells, such as “Seal, Recede,” “Flame, Be My Sword,” and “Phantom Reinforcements Arise,” which have been praised by fans.

The original game offered escape through the Heart of Illusion, but how will you escape Elder Einh? Widely considered a classic Japanese RPG, this game is a must-play for anyone who enjoys traditional JRPGs.
