Despite being considered one of the best robot movies of recent years, Real Steel never received a sequel. Director Shawn Levy recently suggested that a follow-up – even as a TV series – is unlikely. Set in a future where robots box instead of humans, the 2011 film is surprisingly moving despite its heavy use of special effects. It appears we won’t ever find out what happened to the Kenton family and their beloved robot, Atom.
While promoting the final season of Stranger Things, director Shawn Levy shared an update on a potential TV sequel to Real Steel with Collider. Between working on the Netflix series and an upcoming Star Wars film called Star Wars: Starfighter, he has a lot on his plate. When Collider‘s Steven Weintraub (known as Frosty) asked about the Real Steel sequel, Levy was honest – and his answer wasn’t what fans were hoping to hear.
I have to admit, you’re incredibly persistent, Frosty! I joke that even when we’re old, you’ll still be asking me about Real Steel, and honestly, that’s endearing. Right now, though, it’s hard to say if it will actually happen, and I don’t feel very optimistic about it.
The 2011 film Real Steel began with a story idea from Dan Gilroy (known for Nightcrawler and The Bourne Legacy), who based it on a short story called Steel by Richard Matheson. John Gatins wrote the screenplay. Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Pictures supported the project, and Shawn Levy directed after proving his skills with comedies like Date Night and the Night at the Museum films.
Real Steel proved popular with both viewers and critics, earning $300 million worldwide. Despite costing $100 million to make, it was considered a hit, especially as a family film. Critics generally liked the movie’s touching story and how it blended impressive visual effects with a strong emotional center. Currently, it has a 60% rating from critics and a 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Does ‘Real Steel’ Deserve a Sequel?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Although Real Steel ended on a positive note and hinted at more story, a sequel never materialized despite strong interest from audiences and the director. Disney even considered a TV series based on the film, but that idea was eventually abandoned.
Shawn Levy knows how much people love the original film, and while he’s confident he could create a good sequel, he currently prefers to leave it as a classic: a heartwarming sci-fi sports story with great characters, including a robot that’s sure to pull at your heartstrings.
It’s tough to consider revisiting ‘Real Steel’ because the film has a surprisingly strong and dedicated fanbase, despite its box office performance. I wouldn’t want to work on a sequel or TV show unless I was confident I could do it well and honor what people love about the original.
Currently, the answer is uncertain. Honestly, it doesn’t seem very probable, and I’m disappointed to say that. However, I’m trying to preserve the genuine affection we all have for the first film.
