$1,000 hot chocolate topped with gold leaf hits NYC menu

A New York City steakhouse is getting attention for its incredibly expensive hot chocolate cocktail, which costs a thousand dollars per serving.

Benjamin Steakhouse in Midtown is now serving a luxurious hot cocoa cocktail called the “Versailles Velour.” This three-layered drink features premium spirits, edible gold leaf, and a chocolate garnish with the restaurant’s logo. You can find it at Benjamin Steakhouse on 41st Street and at its sister restaurant, Sea Fire Grill.

Bartender Victor Dedushaj crafted the extravagant drink after a customer requested a truly memorable surprise for his wife.

“He said, ‘One of these days, I really want to blow her mind,’” Dedushaj told The New York Post.

Okay, so I just tried the Versailles Velour, and wow! It’s seriously amazing. They make it with a bunch of really good stuff – like Mozart Dark Chocolate Liqueur, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Kahlúa. Then they add fresh espresso, steamed milk, and just a tiny dash of orange bitters. It all comes together perfectly!

The drink’s high price comes mainly from the expensive liquors used to make it—specifically, Grand Marnier Quintessence and Hennessy Richard cognac. Each drink contains about 1.5 ounces of Hennessy and 1 ounce of Grand Marnier, and even a small amount of either of these spirits can cost hundreds of dollars.

This luxurious cocktail is completed with a swirl of whipped cream and decorated with genuine, edible 24-karat gold leaf. It’s served with a special chocolate that’s said to cost $100 each.

Although it looks like a sweet treat, Dedushaj explained that the drink is actually meant to be enjoyed after a meal, like a digestif, and it goes especially well with decadent desserts such as tiramisu or pecan pie.

“It’s more along the lines of digestif than aperitif,” he explained.

A $1,000 cocktail is the latest extravagant item appearing on New York City steakhouse menus, joining other luxury offerings like gold-plated dishes and expensive extras aimed at attracting customers willing to spend a lot of money.

Although this hot chocolate is pricey, it’s not the most expensive one ever made. That title goes to Serendipity 3, which offered a $250,000 frozen hot chocolate decorated with diamonds as a Valentine’s Day special in 2023.

Dedushaj noted that luxury goods, such as the Versailles Velour, continue to be in high demand, particularly from customers seeking unique and memorable purchases.

You know, I was talking to someone about what players really want, and they put it perfectly: people are always going to crave the really high-quality stuff. There’s always a demand for things that are truly exceptional, and that’s what a lot of us are looking for in games.

In November 2025, a coffee shop in Dubai became famous for selling a $1,000 cup of coffee, setting a new world record for the priciest cup ever sold.
