As The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power enters its third season, we can expect to see more characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s vast and imaginative world. Tolkien was a master of creating detailed universes, and his stories are filled with fascinating characters. While The Lord of the Rings only showed us a small part of this world, The Rings of Power offers the opportunity to explore the significant characters and events of the Second Age.
The first two seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power have established the major characters of Middle-earth’s Second Age, including Galadriel, Elrond, Gil-galad, Celebrimbor, and Sauron, along with figures like the Durins, Míriel, Pharazôn, and Isildur. As the show moves towards the war between the Elves and Sauron, we can expect to see even more characters from Tolkien’s original stories appear. Even characters like Gandalf, who aren’t meant to be present in the Second Age, will likely make an appearance in the series.
10. Anárion
Though often talked about in the first two seasons of Rings of Power, Anárion hasn’t physically appeared yet. As Isildur’s younger brother and Elendil’s second son, he’s set to become a prince of Gondor and an important character in Middle-earth. So far, the show has kept him on the western side of Númenor, away from the main events. However, with the series moving towards the fall of Númenor and the rise of Elendil’s family, it’s likely that season 3 of Rings of Power will finally give Anárion a major role.
9. Celeborn
Celeborn, Galadriel’s husband, is a key character from Tolkien’s stories who surprisingly hasn’t appeared in Rings of Power. In The Lord of the Rings, he rules alongside her in Lothlorien. The show’s first season claimed he died in battle, which contradicts established lore. While the series has made many changes, killing off Celeborn seems like a step too far. It’s likely that Galadriel will discover he’s still alive in season 3 of Rings of Power.
8. Celebrian
While Galadriel does mention her husband, Celeborn, in Rings of Power, she hasn’t said anything about their daughter, Celebrian. According to established lore, Celebrian was born quite early in the Second Age, meaning she’d be around a thousand years old during the show’s events. The series might be implying that Galadriel thinks Celebrian is no longer alive. Either way, it’s important for Celebrian to appear soon, as she’s destined to meet and fall in love with Elrond. Season 3 of Rings of Power would be a good time to introduce this storyline.
7. Khamul The Easterling
In season 2 of Rings of Power, Sauron left with the nine rings intended for humans, and season 3 will likely show him giving them out. While the identities of the future Nazgûl are mostly a mystery—even the wraiths themselves have forgotten—we know at least three were from Númenor, and we may have already seen them in the show without realizing it. Another was a character named Khamul the Easterling. The next season might send Sauron eastward—where the Stranger is currently located—giving us our first look at Khamul.
6. Saruman
It doesn’t quite make sense for Saruman to be in Rings of Power. Originally, Saruman was one of the wizards sent to Middle-earth long before the events of The Lord of the Rings to help fight Sauron. But now that Gandalf has appeared in Rings of Power, set in an earlier time period, Saruman will likely show up in season 3. While some fans think the mysterious Dark Wizard of Rhûn might be Saruman, it’s more probable that character is actually one of the Blue Wizards. We can expect to see Saruman as Gandalf’s story unfolds.
5. Radagast
With Gandalf and Saruman appearing in Rings of Power, it seems likely Radagast will also make an appearance. He was one of the original wizards sent to Middle-earth, but by the time of The Lord of the Rings, he’d given up on his task of helping the people of Middle-earth fight against Sauron, choosing instead to focus solely on the natural world. If Radagast appears in season 3 of Rings of Power, it would be interesting to see a version of the character who is still committed to the wizards’ original mission, creating a notable change from what we know of him later on.
4. The Blue Wizards
The recent season of Rings of Power probably showed us one of the Blue Wizards, magical beings sent to Middle-earth long ago. According to Tolkien’s stories, two Blue Wizards – named Alatar and Pallando – were the first to arrive. They journeyed east to the lands of Rhûn to disrupt Sauron’s plans and prevent him from raising an army. Some accounts suggest they even started their own followings there. This leads many to believe the mysterious wizard leading a cult in Rings of Power is either Alatar or Pallando, though his true identity remains unknown.
3. Glorfindel
Glorfindel is one of the most eagerly awaited characters from the Second Age to appear in The Rings of Power. He first appeared in Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, where he saved Frodo from the Nazgûl and brought him to Rivendell. In Peter Jackson’s movies, Arwen took on this role, meaning Glorfindel hasn’t had much screen time yet. Season 3 of The Rings of Power is expected to change that, as he’s a crucial friend and ally to Gil-galad and Elrond during the war against Sauron.
2. Oropher
It’s unclear if we’ll see Oropher in season 3 of Rings of Power, or a future season, because the show has altered the original timeline. Still, this could be a great moment to introduce his character. Oropher is Thranduil’s father and Legolas’s grandfather, and he leads the Silvan Elves during the Second Age. While he won’t fight alongside Gil-galad in the upcoming war between the Elves and Sauron (featured in season 3), he will eventually join the battle during the War of the Last Alliance.
1. Amdír
During the Second Age of Middle-earth, Amdir ruled the land that would eventually become Lothlórien, later known as Galadriel’s home. Unlike some other Elves, Amdir didn’t fight alongside the Noldor against Sauron, waiting until the Last Alliance to join the conflict. However, it’s probable we’ll see him appear in The Rings of Power soon, considering the show’s faster pace. With Galadriel expected to become the ruler of Lothlórien by the end of the fifth season, season three seems like the ideal time to introduce the realm itself.
