If you ask a superhero fan who the strongest X-Men member is, the first name they likely think of is . This mutant, originally from Russia, grows to a towering 7’7″ when he transforms into an incredibly strong, metallic form. Even in his human appearance, he’s an intimidating figure.
But does simply being a mutant automatically make someone the strongest vigilante on the X-Men team? There’s plenty of evidence from Marvel comics and the X-Men films to suggest that Colossus, whose real name is Piotr “Peter” Rasputin, could be considered the most powerful.
Colossus Performs The Fastball Special With Wolverine
One highlight showcasing his skill is his performance of the “Fastball Special,” a famous move linked to the X-Men character Colossus. This involves Piotr throwing Logan through the air with incredible speed – like a fastball, but with much greater force than anyone else could achieve.
I first saw this move back in the old X-Men comics, issue #100 to be exact – Colossus just chucked Wolverine at Angel! It was wild. Then, in the movie X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, they brought it to life. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine basically asked Colossus – who he jokingly called ‘Tin Man’ – to hurl him right at one of those Sentinel robots. He totally ripped the Sentinel’s head off, but it turned out they were just training! It was a pretty awesome scene.
Colossus Becomes The Tsar Of Russia
The word ‘power’ can mean many things, so showing a comic book character’s strength isn’t the only way to demonstrate their abilities. This is true even for incredibly strong characters like Colossus, as seen in the interesting story of his Earth X version and how he gained his powers.
After the Terrigen Mist event, Piotr unexpectedly became the leader of Russia, essentially becoming its tsar. While this might not demonstrate the full range of his mutant abilities, it’s clear he gained immense power – the authority to govern a whole country.
Colossus Gives His Life To End The Legacy Virus
The quote, “With great power comes great responsibility,” is one of the most well-known lines in comic book history. Its enduring appeal lies in its universal truth – it applies to nearly any superhero, not just those in the Marvel Universe. The hero Colossus demonstrated this principle perfectly in a defining moment of his own story.
In Uncanny X-Men #390, the Beast creates a cure for the deadly Legacy Virus. However, the cure can only spread through the air if a mutant dies. Knowing his sister, Magik, succumbed to the virus, Colossus bravely volunteers to sacrifice himself to save millions of lives. This act demonstrated the full extent of his strength and heroism.
Colossus Holds His Own Against Sentinels
As a huge X-Men fan, I was really blown away by Days of Future Past. The movie shows this incredibly bleak future where Sentinels have basically wiped out both humans and mutants. And these aren’t the clunky Sentinels we saw in The Last Stand – these are way more advanced. They’re smaller, but so much smarter! What’s really scary is how quickly they adapt to anything you throw at them. Like, if Iceman tries to freeze them, they instantly adjust and heat up – it’s terrifying!
Colossus, portrayed again by Daniel Cudmore, struggles when battling a robot that mimics his own metallic form. This effectively neutralizes his attacks, as the robot can counter anything he throws at it. Despite this, Colossus’s resilience and determination create a particularly striking scene in the film.
Colossus Takes On The Hulk
A superhero’s bravery is a good way to measure their strength. True heroes don’t give up, even when facing impossible challenges – like battling a seemingly invincible foe such as The Incredible Hulk. Colossus is one of the few who dared to fight him.
Piotr Rasputin, also known as Colossus, and the Hulk have fought several times in Marvel Comics. One notable battle occurred during the “World War Hulk” storyline, where the Hulk transformed into the incredibly powerful “Worldbreaker Hulk” after suffering a devastating personal loss. While the Hulk ultimately defeated Colossus, severely injuring his arms, Colossus’s courage in facing such a formidable opponent demonstrated his own impressive strength.
Colossus Defeats Juggernaut In Deadpool 2
Most X-Men have a main enemy – like Wolverine and Sabretooth, or Professor X and Magneto. For Colossus, that enemy is definitely the Juggernaut. They’ve fought countless times, and often, Colossus has been defeated by the powerful villain.
Okay, so when they finally brought the rivalry between Colossus and Juggernaut to the big screen in Deadpool 2, it was awesome! Stefan Kapicic came back as Piotr, and Ryan Reynolds even did the voice for a CGI Juggernaut – pretty cool, right? But honestly, Colossus totally had the advantage. It looked like Juggernaut was gonna win for a bit, until Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio jumped in to help Piotr. They ended up frying Juggernaut with electricity in a pool – seriously, it was a shocking finish!
Colossus Withstands War Machine’s Full Arsenal
A battle between Colossus and James Rhodes, also known as War Machine, seems very uneven – especially for War Machine. But Colossus recently experienced just how formidable Tony Stark’s friend can be.
During the Marvel Comics event Avengers vs. X-Men, Rhodey (War Machine) attacks Colossus with all his weapons, briefly slowing him down. But Colossus ultimately proves stronger, enduring the attacks and knocking Rhodey unconscious, winning the fight.
Colossus Stops A Moving Train
It’s a classic superhero move: stopping a runaway train before disaster strikes. Superman has famously done it, and we see a memorable moment in Pixar’s The Incredibles where Mr. Incredible does the same. In one scene, Peter Parker (played by Tobey Maguire) manages to halt a speeding New York City subway train just in time, using his strength, willpower, and plenty of web-shooters.
While many comic book heroes have tried to stop runaway trains, Colossus did it in a particularly impressive way in the Ultimate Marvel Universe. He didn’t just slow the train down with his body – he actually caught the 5,000-ton train in his bare hands. A feat like that would have been disastrous for Spider-Man.
Colossus Becomes Cytorrak’s Avatar
The saying “You are your own worst enemy” perfectly describes what happened to the character Colossus during the 2011 Marvel storyline “Fear Itself,” written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Stuart Immonen. In this arc, he unexpectedly became possessed by the spirit of his greatest foe, Juggernaut.
In a strange turn of events, Piotr Rasputin – Colossus – made a deal with the demon Cytorrak to become his earthly form, granting him the power of Juggernaut. This allowed him to defeat the original Juggernaut, Cain Marko, who was currently controlled by a different demon named Kuurth. This wasn’t the only time Colossus acted as Cytorrak’s avatar, however.
Colossus Takes Down The Marauders
Colossus has sometimes had to do things he regrets to ensure justice prevails. Ironically, his greatest strength was also when he was most dangerous.
In the 1986 Uncanny X-Men comic book issue #211, part of the “Fall of the Mutants” story arc, Piotr (also known as Colossus) broke his personal rule against killing to avenge the deaths of the Morlocks and the injuries to his friends, Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler. He unleashed his fury on Mister Sinister’s team, the Marauders, in a particularly violent confrontation. The climax of this fight is remembered as one of his most famous moments: he fatally choked the villain Riptide.
