10 Things a New Star Fox Game Needs to Feature

It’s been a long wait, but Nintendo appears to be bringing back the Star Fox franchise! After being absent for two console generations, Star Fox is set to return to prominence. We recently saw Fox McCloud make his first appearance in a movie with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Glen Powell provided the voice for the character.

Following the recent movie release, rumors are swirling about the future of the Star Fox series. A reliable source, NateTheHate – known for accurately predicting Nintendo’s plans – claims a new Star Fox game is on the way this year. If true, this would be the first new installment since Star Fox Zero came out in 2016.

People are calling the upcoming Star Fox game a return to the classic ‘on-rails’ style, but there are strong rumors of a larger, more modern game planned for 2027. Whatever form it takes, this new game could be crucial for the future of the Star Fox series. Here are some features we hope to see.

10. New Characters

Along with the Classics, Of Course

The Star Fox series features some of Nintendo’s most well-known characters. While Fox McCloud has long been a leader alongside heroes like Falco Lombardi and Peppy Hare, a new game could be a great opportunity to introduce some fresh faces.

I get why you might be worried, especially after how Krystal was treated in Star Fox Adventures. But that wasn’t really her fault – it was more about poor choices made by the game’s creators. She was much better developed in Star Fox Assault, which shows that adding new characters isn’t a problem as long as they’re done well.

There are plenty of animals that could inspire a brand new, unique character to pilot an Arwing. Adding new members to the Star Fox team would be a great move.

9. Mission Variety

The Spice of Life

Star Fox 64 really stood out with the addition of the Landmaster, letting players enjoy exciting ground missions alongside the classic Arwing flight. While flying is always a blast, I think the game was at its best because of how diverse and well-designed its missions were.

The next Star Fox game should build on what’s been working well. Rail shooter gameplay is still fun – flying and shooting everything up is a classic! – but the game would be even better with more diverse experiences.

As a huge Star Fox fan, I really hope the next game goes all-out with the missions! I want to see everything – classic Arwing levels, driving around in the Landmaster, and any other cool ideas Nintendo has. Seriously, they should just throw in everything – the more variety, the better! It would be amazing if they really packed the game with different mission types and gameplay styles.

8. An All-New Voice Cast

Do a Barrel Roll!

Glen Powell is voicing Fox for the movie, but he probably won’t do the same for the game. It would be awesome if he did, but Nintendo will likely choose a different voice cast for the game version.

Now’s the perfect time to finalize the voices for these characters. If Nintendo plans to continue making Star Fox games – and it seems they do, especially with the new movie – it would be great to have a fresh voice cast for the series.

The voice actors in past games have all been talented, but there hasn’t been much consistency with who plays each character across different titles. It would be great if Fox and their team could establish a signature voice actor – someone like Charles Martinet or David Hayter – who becomes strongly associated with a particular character for years to come.

7. RPG Elements

The Skill Tree of Life

Few things in video games are as fun as piloting an Arwing and blasting enemies. But I’ve often thought about how the series could be even better with a few extra features.

I don’t think Star Fox needs to become a sprawling RPG like Mass Effect, though that would be interesting. However, adding some simple RPG features, like a skill tree, could really enhance the gameplay.

Giving players a way to upgrade both the Arwing and Fox’s on-foot abilities would make the game much more diverse. To compete with modern games, offering customization options is essential.

6. A Direct Sequel

The World of Tomorrow

While Star Fox Zero was enjoyable, its story felt a little out of place. It wasn’t a direct continuation or prequel to previous games, but instead offered a fresh take on the original Star Fox 64, almost like a reimagining within a different universe.

Currently, Star Fox Command is the most recent installment in the series. A new game should build upon that foundation, and while it’s important to innovate and move the franchise forward, it’s equally crucial to stay true to what made the original games so beloved.

While the original Star Fox 64 and its fight against Andross were great, it’s time for a new story. It would be exciting to see what happens to the Star Fox team in the future and where their adventures take them next.

5. Return of the Wolf

Howl at the Moon

The Star Fox series has great villains, and it would really benefit the franchise to make Wolf O’Donnell and the Star Wolf team the main enemies again. Lately, most games—except for Star Fox Zero—have attempted to portray them as more sympathetic characters instead.

It’s long overdue to reintroduce Star Wolf as Fox’s main rivals, and to do it in a way that feels genuine. Seeing how compelling Wolf is in Starlink: Battle for Atlas makes this even more important.

It’s a shame that Wolf’s impressive voice and truly ambitious, villainous schemes weren’t fully explored. He and his team deserve a central role in the next Star Fox game, and they should be portrayed as genuinely menacing.

4. Next-Gen Focus

Switch 2 or Bust

Many of the games currently available on the Switch 2 were originally created for both the Switch and Nintendo’s previous console. While this approach works well for some titles, like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the next Star Fox game should be a completely new experience built specifically for the Switch 2.

Donkey Kong Bananza proved that games designed specifically for the Switch 2, without worrying about older consoles, tend to be more successful. A new Star Fox game would likely see similar benefits if it was released only on the Switch 2.

The device’s hardware is truly remarkable, particularly for a portable system. No Star Fox game has ever been played on hardware this good, and imagining what Nintendo could do with the series on such powerful technology is incredibly exciting.

3. An Open Galaxy

No Man’s Star Fox

Nintendo has a knack for creating successful open-world games, as seen with titles like Breath of the Wild. Now that a new Star Fox game might be in development, it could be a good opportunity for them to try another expansive, open-world design.

Honestly, as a gamer, the idea of flying an Arwing through a huge galaxy and then actually landing on planets to take on missions sounds like the ultimate Star Fox experience. Seeing what No Man’s Sky did, I know a game like that is totally achievable now – it’s not just a fantasy anymore!

The Star Fox series has a surprisingly rich universe with memorable planets and diverse locations. I’d love to see a game where you can freely explore these worlds in your Arwing, then smoothly switch into action-packed shooting sequences.

2. Expand the Mythology

Untapped Lore

Many people see Star Fox as simply a space shooter with animal characters, and on the surface, that’s understandable. However, the game’s universe is surprisingly deep and intricate.

The Star Fox comics that appeared in Nintendo Power magazine in the early 1990s are fantastic and really expand the universe of the games. Their stories could be a great foundation for a new Star Fox game, adding more detail and lore to the existing series.

Plus, there’s a strong link between James McCloud, Fox McCloud’s father, and the world of F-Zero. If Nintendo decides to bring back forgotten game series, a new Star Fox game could potentially pave the way for a revival of F-Zero as well.

1. On-Foot Sections

Run and Gun

I know it’s not a common view, but I really enjoy Star Fox Adventures, especially how it lets you explore on foot. While the core of Star Fox is always about shooting, I think a future game could benefit from including elements like those found in Adventures.

The idea of seamlessly switching between flying an Arwing in action-packed battles and then freely exploring planets on foot is really exciting. This kind of large-scale, visually stunning experience is exactly what the Switch 2 needs to demonstrate its capabilities.

The walking sections don’t need to be long – just enough to break up the spaceship shooting. While blasting enemies in the Arwing is awesome, it’s really fun to directly control Fox or another Star Fox team member when they’re on the ground, so we should definitely include those moments.
