Just a heads-up: this article features some pretty unusual games, but you might discover your next obsession! I recently joined my friend Michal Manka to co-host the latest episode of “Trailer Face-Off” on the Find Your Next Game YouTube channel. We each presented five game trailers and secretly voted for our favorites to determine a winner. We didn’t intentionally set out to find the strangest trailers, but that’s what ended up happening. Consider yourself warned!
Ten of the weirdest video game trailers you might have missed go head-to-head
This episode showcases a wildly diverse range of games. You can play as a team of rats running a restaurant, go mushroom hunting with a pig, race subways through New York, or battle massive construction vehicles! Even some of the more popular games, like the recently released The Outer Worlds 2 (which was fun to review, despite its oddities), and PowerWash Simulator 2, have a strange side. Which of these unusual games do you think will be the best?
Michal has already showcased trailers for two games – The Outer Worlds 2 and PowerWash Simulator 2 – and could easily take the title of ‘Head of Sequels’ from Ben Schwartz with those Obsidian trailers. But there’s more! The first trailer shown was incredibly impressive: Metro Rivals: New York, an arcade-style racing game set in the New York City subway system, created by the team behind the popular Train Sim World series. Then Michal revealed House Fighters: Total Mess, a multiplayer airplane shooter similar to Airfix Dogfighter. Finally, he presented Restaurats, which he described as “Ratatouille without any humans.” While that’s a simplification, it gives you the basic idea. In Restaurats, you and your friends play as giant rats running a restaurant, while a sneaky rat named Bob steals your profits and gambles them away.
Since I focus on smaller, independent games, my choices for this episode were always likely to be a bit unusual. But I still managed to surprise Michal – he actually said, “Ok, what the…?” and “I don’t get it!” There wasn’t much explaining that. First, I showed Forestrike, a martial arts game with roguelike elements. It’s all about planning your moves and using foresight to succeed in combat. I also highlighted it during my Steam Next Fest coverage recently. Then I presented Demonschool, which we described as being similar to the Persona series. It’s a role-playing game where you have to stop a demon apocalypse before the semester ends.
Michal’s initial reaction came from watching the new game trailer, and it’s understandable – the trailer starts strangely. ZWAARD focuses on sword customization, and players will need to survive a robot-filled wasteland by collecting useful parts. The game Hermit & Pig left Michal confused, as this unusual RPG blends everyday life with strange elements like poisonous mushrooms and corporate secrets. Finally, I showed a demo of Motorslice, which I’ve described as a ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ style game set on a construction site, and it was also part of this month’s Steam Next Fest.
We’re curious to know what games you think are the best! Watch the video to see if your top picks match ours – it was a really tight competition, and we genuinely didn’t know which game would win until the very end. If you like this video, be sure to check out the first episode as well!
