Metroidvania games are known for their tough boss fights. While exploring and gaining power are key parts of the experience, you really prove your skills by taking on those challenging final bosses.
Everyone has different ideas about what makes a boss battle really difficult, so my personal experience definitely influenced how I ranked these. I’ve tried to put the most frustrating and complex bosses at the end of the list.
We’ve got a wide range of Metroidvania games here, including those with unique controls, dark gothic styles, a fresh take on a classic platformer, and even a boss inspired by the latest *Metroid* game. Let’s dive in and talk about some truly challenging final bosses!
10. Eldar
Dandara
Let’s be clear: *Dandara* isn’t a straightforward game. It’s a beautifully designed Metroidvania, but instead of running and jumping, you navigate by bouncing off walls. Given that gravity isn’t a major factor, the combat can be quite difficult.
Eldar was a tough final boss, though not as frustrating as dealing with the constantly moving cannon you encounter beforehand. It took me a long time to finally beat him.
This boss has two phases. First, he appears as a large, floating TV screen and attempts to crush you. Then, he changes into a monstrous embryo that shoots various projectiles, and you must break through his shields before you can actually hurt him.
Eldar can be a difficult and frustrating enemy, but with practice – learning his attacks and mastering the timing of your movements – he’s definitely beatable.
9. Blighted Lord
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
I really got into *Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights* and the original *Blasphemous*, both of which are challenging games. So, going in, you should be aware that this isn’t going to be a walk in the park.
Okay, so the Blighted Lord isn’t *quite* as chaotic as fighting The Mad Knight, Ulv, but it’s still really tough! A big part of why is the way the game limits how often you can use your Spirit attacks – you can’t just spam them, you have to be strategic about each one.
The Blighted Lord isn’t particularly strong in a fight, but it’s tough and will constantly send spirits to bombard you with attacks. It does occasionally try to attack you directly, too.
Just because she doesn’t seem enthusiastic doesn’t mean the Blighted Lord isn’t incredibly dangerous. However, if you’re at a good level and have a strong team of Spirits helping you, you should be able to defeat him relatively easily.
8. Medeya the Cosmic Voice
The Last Faith

Things are getting really interesting with the release of *The Last Faith*. This beautiful but brutal Gothic adventure is quite challenging, and the final boss, Medeya the Cosmic Voice, is a perfect fit for the game.
Medeya attacks Eryk with everything she has – swords, lightning, and even blasts of ice. She can also protect herself when needed. What makes her especially dangerous is that she becomes *more* powerful as she loses health, so you’ll need to be constantly vigilant to win.
Okay, so Medeya is a tough boss, for sure. But once you learn her attack patterns and nail the timing, you can totally take her down. Just a warning though – don’t get overconfident, or Eryk is gonna have a bad time. She’ll punish you if you get sloppy!
7. Birdman & Starworm
Iconoclasts

Joakim Sandberg is known for creating imaginative games, and *Iconoclasts* is a standout title. This Metroidvania tells a unique story about a mechanic who must save the world, ultimately facing off against a bizarre creature called the Starworm and its pilot, the Birdman.
Initially, the Starworm attacks Robin by creating realistic hallucinations. She has to dodge these illusions while simultaneously fixing problems on a screen. After overcoming these phases, the Starworm becomes enraged, attempting to crush her with its large claws, launching bouncing eyeballs, and generally attacking her relentlessly.
Just when you think you’ve defeated the Starworm, it splits open, revealing a surprise – the Birdman! And he’s not just a fighter; he’s a highly skilled mechanic.
He tries relentlessly to defeat Robin, occasionally defending himself, and then uses the Starworm to help attack her. This final boss is incredibly memorable and has stuck with me ever since.
6. Raven Beak
Metroid Dread

For years, Samus Aran depended on the Chozo’s advanced technology to help her battle Space Pirates and other deadly aliens. But in *Metroid Dread*, a powerful and ruthless Chozo warrior named Raven Beak turns the tables, becoming Samus’ greatest threat.
Raven Beak is a truly formidable enemy – she’s responsible for all the trouble in the game and ultimately serves as the final boss you have to defeat.
This fight is really challenging, with multiple tough stages and a lot of attacks you need to avoid. You also have to perfectly time quick-time events to win, which made my battle with Raven Beak take much longer than I expected.
Raven Beak is a fierce opponent, attacking with claws, lasers, and various projectiles. He even uses black holes and massive energy blasts! Just when you think you’ve defeated him, an X-Parasite takes over, creating a horrifying new enemy.
5. Revenance
Tevi

I really wanted to love *Tevi* – the story and characters are genuinely interesting! But honestly, mixing the bullet hell and Metroidvania styles just didn’t quite work for me. The boss fights, especially the final one against Revenance, were just *too* chaotic and overwhelming. It wasn’t the most enjoyable experience, unfortunately.
You’ll likely be overwhelmed very quickly when you fight this boss. Revenance attacks with constant waves of projectiles and complex laser grids that fire damaging bursts. And that’s just the beginning – the fight gets much harder in the second phase.
If you can learn to dodge the boss’s attacks, you have a decent chance of winning this difficult fight.
4. King Priest
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree

Okay, so the first phase of the King Priest fight in *Mandragora*? Honestly, it’s kinda awesome. It’s actually a really fun and fair fight. But then… he transforms into this massive, glowing skeleton, and everything just goes completely off the rails. It gets way harder from there!
You’ll need to dodge energy beams from the constantly teleporting King Priest while also keeping Mandragora safe. To make things even harder, there’s a time limit, and King Priest keeps summoning unpredictable, explosive balls that chase after you!
King Priest is a challenging boss fight, mainly because the different parts of the battle don’t quite work well together. Overall, it’s a tough battle, typical of the Metroidvania genre.
3. Dracula & Death
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

In *Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin*, you’ll play as both Charlotte and Jonathan throughout the game, battling waves of supernatural creatures. However, the ultimate challenge arrives in the final battle where you must confront Dracula and Death at the same time!
As a longtime fan, I was thrilled to see Konami finally pit these two characters against each other. However, don’t mistake that for an easy fight – it was anything but.
At the start of the fight, Dracula will quickly move around, throw fireballs, and transform into a cloud of bats. Meanwhile, Death will attempt to slice you with his scythe and also send out smaller, flying scythes.
Just when you think you’ve survived, Dracula and Death combine into one terrifying creature: a massive, skeletal bat. This monster will attempt to crush you, attack with huge scythes, and bombard you with fireballs. If none of that works, it’ll try to impale you on the spikes of its enormous wings.
This is easily one of the most fun and challenging boss fights in the history of *Castlevania*.
2. Vahram the Immortal
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown features many challenging boss fights, but the final battle against Vahram the Immortal is particularly intense. It’s not just that you’re fighting a god – this god also plays dirty!
Vahram attacks with both fireballs and close-range blade attacks, and you’ll need to defend yourself to avoid serious damage. As the battle continues through multiple stages, it becomes increasingly difficult.
One of the most frustrating parts of this battle is timing your dodges to avoid attacks that appear just moments before they hit. It’s especially difficult when Vahram creates illusions of himself, making it hard to know where the real attacks are coming from.
No matter how you look at it, this is an incredibly challenging final battle.
1. The Radiance
Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is a particularly well-remembered and difficult Metroidvania game, and its last boss fight against The Radiance is incredibly tough.
That’s partly due to the fact it immediately follows the fight with the Hollow Knight, a massive, infected creature. Plus, there’s no opportunity to save your progress, meaning you move directly from one challenging, multi-stage battle to the next.
Basically, you need to learn the Hollow Knight’s attack patterns and dodge them so you reach the Radiance with enough health to win.
The Radiance attacks with both lasers and spears, and the fight is divided into six distinct stages. The final stages involve a frantic climb across platforms that are quickly disappearing. Ultimately, you defeat the Radiance using the power of the Hollow Knight’s spirit.
I lost count of how many times I had to try and defeat The Radiance, but it was a real challenge. It’s an incredibly tough, but awesome boss in a fantastic Metroidvania game!
