10 FPS Games That Totally Reinvent Themselves During Their Runtime

First-person shooter games have a pretty established formula, making it tough to innovate. Players enjoy them for their competitive online play and straightforward gameplay, but one of the best things about gaming is its ability to still surprise us with new experiences.

Several first-person shooter games have successfully surprised players with innovative twists. These games are praised for revitalizing gameplay and defying expectations, proving that you should always be prepared for the unexpected. The key takeaway is to never assume you’ve figured everything a game will throw at you.

There are HUGE spoilers ahead for any of the games you see on this list.

10. Dead Space: Extraction

A Halfway Twist Out Of Nowhere

Though it’s played like a rail shooter, Dead Space on the Nintendo Wii successfully brought first-person shooting to the console. This version featured gameplay tailored to the Wii’s controls, and introduced players to Sam Caldwell, a team member transporting a mysterious artifact called the Marker to the Aegis VII colony.

The first act takes a shocking turn when Sam is seemingly driven to kill his teammates by the Marker, which causes them to attack him. Just as quickly, Sam is shot and killed by a security team led by McNeill, who mistakenly believe he was the aggressor. This security team then becomes the new playable characters for the rest of the game. This was a particularly surprising twist for a Wii spin-off, as players generally expect to control the same character throughout an entire game.

9. BioShock: Infinite

A Mind-Bending Multiversal Twist

The BioShock series is famous for its surprising plot twists, so it’s no surprise several games appear on this list. In BioShock: Infinite, you play as Booker DeWitt, sent to the floating city of Columbia to rescue Elizabeth from the antagonist, Zachary Comstock, who built it. The game takes a huge turn in its final act, revealing that Booker and Comstock are actually the same person, split into two different identities by a single decision involving a baptism.

Elizabeth’s discovery of countless universes—each containing a lighthouse, a man, and a city—connects to the larger story and culminates in the finale. In that finale, multiple versions of Elizabeth drown Booker during his baptism, preventing his birth in any reality. This reveal fundamentally altered how players understood the narrative and reframed the entire game experience. Though the story proved divisive, it undeniably delivered a shocking twist and a significant shift in perspective later in the game.

8. Call Of Duty: Black Ops

A Psychological Twist For The Ages

As a huge Call of Duty fan, I always thought the first Black Ops had one of the best twists ever. The whole story seemed to be about Alex Mason teaming up with Viktor Reznov to take down Nikita Dragovich. But then, it hits you – Reznov had been dead for years! And even more shocking, it turns out Mason was actually a brainwashed sleeper agent, programmed by Dragovich to assassinate JFK – and it looks like he actually did it. It totally blew my mind when I first played it!

Players truly understood Black Ops was different – a psychological thriller – when this shocking reveal happened. That theme has stuck with the series ever since, known for its big twists, focus on the mind, and characters you can’t quite trust. The fact that it felt like a typical Call of Duty game at first made the impact even stronger – it’s still a moment I haven’t forgotten.

7. Star Wars: Battlefront II

Things Are Never The Same After Order 66

Even if players anticipate a plot twist, it doesn’t lessen its impact when it happens. Order 66 is famous in Star Wars history, but experiencing it in the game, after playing as the Jedi during the Clone Wars, made it particularly shocking and brutal.

When the order comes down, the player participates in the attack on the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. This is a turning point – seeing your character become a villain transforms the game from an enjoyable sci-fi adventure into something genuinely frightening. Although the story continues to follow the Empire’s growth, it never quite feels as optimistic or lighthearted as the beginning of this game, or the previous one.

6. Crysis

Regular Shooter Becomes Survival Horror

Okay, so the Crysis games… people remember them, but honestly, they didn’t get quite the same hype as Crytek’s original Far Cry. Still, I have to say, the big twist in the first Crysis? That moment when everything just completely changes? It’s still one of the best surprises I’ve seen in a game, even now.

The game takes an unexpected turn when the team reaches the North Korean base they’re sent to attack. That’s when they discover the true enemy: aliens. Suddenly, Nomad and his squad are fighting a sci-fi shooter with horror elements, a far cry from the realistic military game it initially seemed to be. This surprising twist was a hit with everyone, and it laid the groundwork for potential sequels.

5. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Soldier Becomes Cyborg Super Soldier

The Wolfenstein series is known for its surprisingly odd and entertaining story choices. But the most unexpected and shocking moment in the game’s almost forty-year run was when the hero, BJ Blazkowicz, was killed mid-game. His beheading was a huge shock, but his friends managed to save his head and attach it to the body of a powerful, genetically-engineered Nazi soldier, creating a bizarre and futuristic twist.

Okay, so this wasn’t just a weird cutscene, it actually messed with how the game played. After becoming more cyborg, BJ got a bunch of new abilities that totally changed things up. It’s kinda crazy because earlier in the game, they intentionally made him weaker to make it more challenging. Honestly, it was one of the strangest and most unsettling things I’ve ever seen in a game, but it somehow worked because it fit perfectly with Wolfenstein’s over-the-top, crazy style.

4. Far Cry 2

A Surprisingly Wholesome, Yet Depressing, Twist

The Far Cry games often have unexpected endings and plot twists, but this one isn’t the most shocking. It doesn’t change how the game plays, but it does make you reconsider your actions and the character you’ve been controlling. As you get closer to finishing the game, you discover that The Jackal, the villain you’re supposed to eliminate, isn’t actually a bad person. He’s been working to protect millions of civilians by helping them escape the war.

Although the game ends sadly with the player character’s death regardless of choices, it can also be seen as hopeful, or at least a strong statement against war. The game suggests that war isn’t simple, and the player’s actions throughout the story have had painful consequences. This realization fundamentally changes the way you understand the entire game.

3. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II

A Betrayal So Shocking It Changed Everything

It’s shocking to kill off major characters, especially the one players control, so close to the end of a game. Players were expecting a final showdown with Makarov, the Russian ultranationalist who was responsible for framing America and starting the war earlier in the story.

Instead of being a hero, General Shepherd shockingly betrayed Task Force 141, killing off key characters Ghost and Roach, who players had controlled throughout the game. This game took unexpected turns, including bringing the conflict to the United States and shifting the focus from defeating Makarov to getting revenge on Shepherd. While the newer Modern Warfare II also had a surprising twist, this original betrayal remains a truly shocking and unforgettable moment.

2. Halo: Combat Evolved

Sci-Fi Action Suddenly Turns To Horror

The original Halo was so successful because players expected a simple, direct experience, much like the early twists in Call of Duty campaigns. The game started with Master Chief landing on a mysterious Halo ring and attempting a rescue mission, but quickly turned into a terrifying fight for survival when humanity accidentally unleashed a deadly alien threat called The Flood.

The creatures drain the life from everything, and the story takes a shocking turn when it’s revealed the Halo ring was built by an ancient race, the Forerunners, to trap a dangerous parasite called the Flood. The ring was also designed as a last resort weapon – capable of wiping out entire populations to prevent the Flood from feeding. This unexpected horror element fundamentally changed the game, and it remains one of the most memorable twists in gaming history.

1. Bioshock

The Best Twist In Gaming?

BioShock is famous for its surprising plot twists, and the first game contains one of the biggest. Throughout the game, you play as Jack, who is guided by a man named Atlas. Atlas asks you to eliminate the ‘Little Sisters’ you encounter in the underwater city of Rapture, but you can choose to do so or not. However, the game takes a shocking turn when it’s revealed that Atlas is actually the villain, a character named Fontaine.

The Little Sisters aren’t actually villains, and if you’ve spared them throughout the game, you’ll get a happy ending where Jack adopts them as his daughters after they assist him. However, if you’ve been collecting them for ADAM, that continues in the final moments, and Jack will receive a bleak or angry ending depending on your choices.

This decision, which players may not realize is a mistake at first, can have devastating consequences. Once you understand the full implications, you’re left with a difficult choice: accept being at a disadvantage with fewer resources, or completely alter your gameplay to pursue the best possible ending.
