Considering how huge and detailed the world of Elden Ring already is, it’s surprising to learn that even more content was originally planned. Over time, dedicated fans have dug through the game’s files and uncovered a lot of cut material, including entire quests and storylines that didn’t make it into the finished game.
Over the years, fans of Elden Ring have often wondered about content that was removed from the game. These cut questlines could have significantly altered our understanding of the Lands Between and the game’s overall story.
10. Guilbert & The Redeemers
“Guilbert and The Redeemers” is a nickname given by fans to recently discovered data from Elden Ring. This data revealed an NPC named Guilbert, who was intended to be part of a group called “The Redeemers.” Although Guilbert didn’t appear in the final game, his existence suggests that the developers originally planned a more elaborate and organized faction system for Elden Ring than what currently exists, one with clearer allegiances and structures.
This questline, unlike others found in Elden Ring, isn’t fully fleshed out with dialogue or a clear story. However, clues suggest it took place in early Limgrave and involved the character Guilbert. Many players believe Guilbert’s story was combined with or replaced by Bloody Finger Hunter Yura during the game’s development.
The idea of adding another group to the game, like the Recusants, Bloody Fingers, or Frenzied Flame followers, is really appealing. It also suggests that the initial plan for Elden Ring focused more on different factions than the story centered around individual characters that we ultimately got.
9. Merchant Kale’s Great Caravan & The Burial Crows
The removed questline for Merchant Kale in Elden Ring caused a lot of discussion among players. It significantly changed his role, turning him from a minor character into a key part of the story surrounding the Frenzied Flame. The quest involved Kale investigating what happened to the Nomadic Merchants’ Great Caravan, and he eventually learned that his people had been hunted down and buried alive under Leyndell because they worshipped the Frenzied Flame.
So, apparently there was a whole storyline they cut where I, as Kale, would have journeyed all over the Lands Between and eventually ended up in those creepy Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. It was supposed to be a really intense revenge story, fueled by my character’s pure hatred for the Golden Order. Pretty wild, huh?
I remember reading about a really cool quest they had planned! It would have involved hunting down these enemies called Burial Crows. Apparently, they carried secret letters that held clues about what happened to the Caravan. You’d collect things like “Burial Crow’s Letter” and take them to this character, Kale, who could figure out what they meant. It sounded like a really intriguing way to uncover the mystery!
Although the questline was taken out of the game, a fan-made mod brings it back, restoring the dialogue and story progression. This lets players experience Kale’s heartbreaking story and understand his original connection to the Frenzied Flame.
8. White Mask Varre & The Maidenless Voyage
You encounter White Mask Varre very early in the game, and he was originally intended to have a bigger purpose. The initial plan was for Varre to let players complete the game without needing to find a maiden – essentially allowing a playthrough with no maiden at all.
The game’s original design included a way for players to advance without the usual help from Melina or the Two Fingers. While the game currently presents the player as “maidenless,” removed content suggests this was meant to be an option for a different path through the game.
Varre had the potential to be a significant alternative to the Roundtable Hold. By adding more invasion missions and strengthening his connection to Mohg, he could have offered players a clear path for rejecting the Erdtree from the beginning. This would have made joining the Bloody Fingers feel like a meaningful decision, influencing how the story unfolds, how you interact with other characters, and even leading to different endings.
7. Asimi: The Eternal King
The Asimi cut plotline is a fascinating, but currently unexplored, part of the game’s lore, tied to the Silver Tears and Eternal Cities. Information discovered through data mining hints that Asimi was a very important character – potentially an “Eternal King” or a leader of the mimic creatures found in Nokron and Nokstella.
Although we haven’t discovered any complete conversations or quest details, the available information hints that Asimi was planned to play a role in furthering the Silver Tears’ ambition to either create or become a powerful leader.
Asimi’s story probably would have delved into the history of the Eternal Cities. Given the Silver Tears’ ability to copy living things, Asimi could have been their greatest achievement or a flawed attempt at creating a hero. This storyline could have expanded on the overall backstory of Elden Ring.
Removing this content actually fit well with FromSoftware’s style of storytelling, which often leaves things open to interpretation and adds to the mystery surrounding the Eternal Cities.
6. Bernahl’s Finger Maiden
Knight Bernahl’s story in Elden Ring is quite detailed, but a significant part of it was removed before the game was released. This cut content involved an extra character, Bernahl’s Finger Maiden, who players could have interacted with at the Smoldering Church when first arriving in Caelid.
Early versions of the game included options for a different way to progress beyond Melina’s offer. Players could have chosen to follow Bernahl’s Finger Maiden instead, which involved a unique interaction – setting her ablaze – and then finding her throughout the Lands Between, much like following the wandering warrior Alexander.
Details about the Finger Maiden’s look and armor suggest how this quest might have fit into the game, and it’s possible there were plans for a different ending, too.
5. St. Trina & The Red-Eyed Merchants
Besides the Kale’s Great Caravan quest, there’s another fascinating, unreleased quest involving Kale and his siblings. Players would have explored The Lands Between, finding hints by interacting with the Red Eyed Merchants, ultimately learning how to control the Cursed Flame.
Players would eventually discover a legendary song capable of calming the Cursed Flame. After learning the song, they’d return to Kale for a special item, St. Trina’s Crystal Ball. This ball unlocked a new system called Dream Mist, which players could collect by lulling creatures to sleep and carefully gathering their Dream Mist with the crystal ball.
As a fan, I was really excited about a feature they had planned where you could collect ‘Dream Mists’ from different creatures. It would have unlocked cool rewards and filled up a bestiary – basically a collection of creatures – that gave you helpful bonuses when fighting certain enemies. Sadly, this whole questline got cut, and it would have given us a lot more background on what happened to Saint Trina. It’s a shame it didn’t make it into the final game!
4. Big Heads
Many players might recall seeing large, glowing head statues in early previews of Elden Ring. Although they weren’t part of the final game, these statues – nicknamed “Big Heads” by fans – would have likely sparked a lot of discussion if they had made the cut.
In terms of the game’s story, Big Heads were first discovered near certain ruins and may have been part of quests given by characters you meet. Another possibility is that they relate to the ancient gods of the Elden Ring, or perhaps they’re remnants of a civilization from a long-lost era. It’s also possible they were added simply for visual appeal and later removed during the game’s development as a change in artistic direction.
3. Shanehaight, Lord Of Grace
Shanehaight was a character with a complete questline that, like Kenneth Haight, involved giving him an item to continue. This would then send players into the sewers to defeat the boss Morgott, the Fell Omen.
Players can still find Shanehaight’s armor set in the game, located close to the Abandoned Coffin Site of Grace. It’s guarded by several powerful Omen enemies, suggesting Shanehaight wouldn’t have fared well even if his storyline had been included.
2. The Forgotten Forge
The world of Elden Ring is huge, and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion made it even bigger. Surprisingly, a complete area was built for the expansion but ultimately cut from the final game. This unused area, known as the “Unused Forge Map,” wasn’t linked to any part of the main game world.
The Forge is a completely built environment, featuring a complex dungeon with original puzzles to solve, much like those found in other dungeons within Secrets of the Olde Worlde.
1. Reeling Rico & St. Trina’s Dreambrew
The ‘Reeling Rico’ questline was a significant amount of content cut from Elden Ring. It revolved around a character named Rico and a special gameplay feature involving dreams that didn’t end up in the final game. Rico would have tasked players with gathering ‘Slumber Fog’ to create ‘Dreambrew,’ a potion connected to the enigmatic St. Trina.
The removed questline heavily featured sleep and dreams and probably revealed more about the character Miquella, though his story remains mostly hinted at in the finished game. The main mechanic involved giving NPCs a special drink called Dreambrew, letting players see into their minds and dreams.
This feature would have shown us what characters were really thinking and feeling, and hinted at their pasts, ultimately making them more complex and giving us a clearer understanding of the story than what we currently see.
Even though a certain storyline was cut from the main game, parts of it seem to have found a new life in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, especially with its greater emphasis on dreams and the character St. Trina. It’s definitely one of the most fascinating pieces of content removed from Elden Ring that fans have discovered, and it really shows how complex and detailed the game’s story is.
