One of the most frustrating things about video games, in my opinion, is discovering a series that’s been great, but still hasn’t hit its best point yet.
I could point to games like Dark Souls, which had a fantastic three-part story that doesn’t need continuing – it reached a natural conclusion. But there are also many other game series where the story or gameplay could easily support several more installments.
I don’t want franchises to go on forever, as I believe it’s important for creators to be free to try new things. However, I also appreciate being able to finish a story and feel satisfied with the world it created.
I could easily name dozens of game series I’d instantly buy a new installment of, even if it came as a surprise, and that’s exactly what this list of ten dream game sequels is all about.
10. The Wolf Among Us 2
The Long-Awaited Return of Telltale

The Wolf Among Us (2013)
Even though I haven’t played many games from Telltale, I vividly remember being saddened by their closing in 2018. It was clear they were a studio truly dedicated to story-driven games, like The Wolf Among Us.
Thankfully, it didn’t take long for them to come back, partnering with LCG Entertainment. In 2019, they announced that The Wolf Among Us 2 was actually happening, which was a huge and welcome surprise for me that year.
After a new trailer in 2022, there’s been no news about the next Bigby Wolf game, which makes me worry about how development is going.
After the company’s layoffs last year, it’s been hard to stay optimistic, but I really hope The Wolf Among Us 2 lives up to the original – even though we’re not even sure if the game is still being made.
9. System Shock 3
A Crown Full of Dust
System Shock 2 (1999)
Discovering science fiction through the game BioShock, then finding out about the series that influenced it, and finally realizing the newest game took a decade to make has been a really wild and stressful experience – not one I’d wish on anyone else.
OtherSide Entertainment first announced System Shock 3 in 2015, but its development has faced numerous setbacks. These include delays, the departure of Warren Spector, and vague updates from Nightdive Studios, suggesting ongoing difficulties. Despite these challenges, many remain hopeful for the game’s eventual release.
If you still think the game will come out, you’re likely somewhere between hopeful and a little too trusting, just like me. It’s understandable, though, because this series is worth waiting for.
Considering this team is built from the talented developers behind Looking Glass and Irrational Games, I’m confident they’ll successfully create System Shock 3 and stay true to what makes the series great.
8. Uncharted 5
Extending the Drake Legacy
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016)
It’s a real conflict: a part of me hopes Naughty Dog will explore completely new game ideas, moving beyond the series they’re known for. But another part of me would instantly purchase Uncharted 5 if it were released!
Even though I’m not a huge fan of the original Star Wars trilogy, I still find the impact of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End remarkable – it’s a game that has stuck with me for over a decade, and few others, in any genre, have made such a lasting impression.
Instead of another adventure with Nathan Drake, I believe the best way to conclude his story would be to focus on his daughter, continuing his legacy. While the current ending felt complete, I still think there’s potential for more stories within that world, perhaps with a new protagonist carrying the torch. It would be a fitting tribute to one of the greatest video game characters of the 21st century.
To be honest, I’d probably buy a new Uncharted game even if it didn’t involve Nathan Drake or his family. I think I need to accept that and start saving up for it now!
7. Sleeping Dogs 2
Time to Appreciate It Properly
Sleeping Dogs (2012)
As a gamer, it really frustrates me when a fantastic game doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. And honestly, whenever I think about underrated gems, Sleeping Dogs immediately comes to mind. It’s a game that truly deserves more love!
Over time, people have started to appreciate it more, but it still hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves as one of the greatest and most captivating open-world games ever created.
A new game – either a fresh start or a continuation of an existing series – would be our chance as players to show support for an overlooked franchise, and allow its developers to provide it with the sustained attention it deserves.
I suspect people will eventually appreciate Sleeping Dogs more over time, though I’m not sure if that will happen. I hope future generations will be able to experience and enjoy a game that was so innovative when it first came out, something I really want for them.
6. Red Dead Redemption 3
What Really Happened in Blackwater?
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)
After playing Red Dead Redemption 2, and knowing how much freedom the first game gave us, I’m pretty sure this isn’t the end of the Red Dead story. It feels like there’s still more to come!
The game’s ending smoothly ties together its different parts, building a unified world. However, some events, especially the Blackwater Massacre and what caused it, are still left open to interpretation.
Look, I’m a huge Red Dead fan, and I’m telling you, I’d give anything – seriously, even my house! – if it meant Rockstar would make Red Dead Redemption 3. I’m especially dreaming of a game that lets you go back to the very beginning with the Van der Linde gang, maybe even playing as someone like Landon Ricketts to see how it all started.
After that, the Red Dead Redemption series seems stuck repeating history because it can’t realistically progress forward in time. Moving the story ahead would overlap with the settings of games like L.A. Noire or Grand Theft Auto, so it’s logical to revisit the past and provide a satisfying conclusion for fans.
5. New NieR
Delving Deeper Into Yoko Taro’s Madness
NieR: Automata (2017)
I’m such a big fan of Yoko Taro that I’d likely buy anything he released, even a blank page. So, you can imagine how quickly I’d get my hands on a sequel to NieR: Automata.
Honestly, I really appreciated how neatly this story wrapped up. Trying to stretch it out further just wouldn’t have made sense, in my opinion. But, and this is a big but, I always want games that really make you think, you know? So while the ending felt right, a part of me still wishes the deeper themes could have been explored even further to satisfy that craving for a truly philosophical gaming experience.
Though separated by thousands of years, NieR: Automata and NieR Replicant only share a very subtle connection – like an old religious symbol appearing as a character’s tattoo. Because of this, I believe a similar approach could be used again without issue.
It feels like big-budget games are increasingly lacking originality and risk-taking. I believe PlatinumGames is one of the few companies brave enough to try genuinely new things without going under.
4. Devil May Cry 6
A New Beginning
Devil May Cry 5 (2019)
Honestly, I don’t need much of an excuse to want to buy Devil May Cry 6. Just the fond memories I have and my excitement for the game are enough reason for any future impulse purchase.
While the latest game in the series offers a good ending, it doesn’t completely wrap things up, so it makes sense – and fans likely want – to see more adventures with Dante, Vergil, and Nero. There’s no reason to leave those characters behind.
Honestly, hack-and-slash games just aren’t what they used to be. It feels like the genre’s been fading for years, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. So, I’m really hoping a few of the big names that still work will give us another game – I’m counting on them to keep the style alive!
I’m really happy to see Devil May Cry doing well financially. It’s a franchise I absolutely love, and it’s great news for anyone who enjoys action games. Hopefully, this success means Capcom will make another one, which would be fantastic for both the company and its fans.
3. New Deus Ex
Adam Jensen Needs Closure
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (2016)
I don’t just get excited about new games because they look cool. Sometimes, like with Deus Ex, I feel like getting a new installment is just the right thing to do – it feels like a logical next step and honestly, a bit of a necessity for fans like me!
Considering Mankind Divided felt unfinished and had a very unsatisfying ending, the best course of action is to wait for a sequel that properly concludes Adam Jensen’s story.
It’s incredibly frustrating to see such a beloved series end without a proper conclusion and no plans for the future. I’m so passionate about it that I wouldn’t just buy it – I’d even consider helping to finance its continuation.
Embracer Group needs to figure out a solution – whether it’s through crowdfunding, releasing content in parts, making a deal with a big company, or even something drastic – or they’ll face a very negative review from me on Yelp.
2. Dishonored 3
Give Us Back the King of Stealth
Dishonored 2 (2016)
I’m disappointed that action-focused games aren’t as popular as they used to be, but what really bothers me is how rare true stealth games are these days. They’re usually just added to other types of games as a minor feature. That’s why I think Dishonored 3 is coming out at the perfect time.
The first two games are considered some of the greatest stealth games of all time. The world they created – whether continuing the story of the Attano family or introducing new characters chosen by the Outsider – is rich and interesting enough to deserve more games.
Deathloop hints at a connection between its universes – it’s clear something links them, but you have to really dig in to understand how. This approach would strengthen the already impressive world Arkane Studios has created.
Following the news about Marvel’s Blade, I truly believe a new Dishonored game is exactly what the studio should focus on next. I’d pre-order it instantly – and with such enthusiasm, I think my purchase might even break the sound barrier!
1. Half-Life 3
The Most Necessary Trilogy in History
Half-Life 2 (2004)
I believe video games are an art form, so I generally avoid saying they need anything, as that feels too practical when discussing an interactive experience. However, I’ll make an exception for Half-Life 3 – we really need that game!
I believe Valve will eventually resolve the cliffhanger ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and finish Gordon Freeman’s story, no matter how long it takes.
Despite over fifty years of video games, nothing compares to the enormous anticipation surrounding Half-Life 3. No other sequel, whether it’s been announced or not, feels as important or necessary as this one.
I’m a relatively new fan of Half-Life, having joined the community just two years ago, so I haven’t been anticipating this for twenty years like some others. Still, I completely understand the intense feeling of needing closure, that restless feeling until the story is finished. Hopefully, the developers will deliver and finally give us the satisfying ending we’ve been waiting for.
