Following the positive reception to Peacemaker, James Gunn and John Cena believe DC has the potential to successfully introduce any comic book character to a wider audience. Peacemaker himself was a lesser-known character before, but quickly became popular with fans. They feel other DC heroes and villains deserve similar opportunities – their own TV shows, and the chance to become as well-known as Peacemaker.
Characters like Hawkgirl, Static Shock, and the Question have a lot to offer a TV series. With their unique abilities, rich histories, and compelling personal stories, they could become major stars in the DC Universe if given their own spotlight. While Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are beloved, fans are eager to explore more of the DC comic world.
Hawkgirl & Hawkman Have A Long & Complex Story
However, that doesn’t limit the character’s potential. Fans are aware of his extensive and complex history within DC Comics, particularly his ongoing romantic relationship with Hawkman, which persists throughout all alternate universes.
Hawkgirl and Hawkman have a really complex history. Their origins are constantly changing because they’re repeatedly reborn, and these new lives affect who they are and what powers they have. A detailed TV series is the best way to unravel and make sense of their confusing, cyclical story.
Animal Man Has A Very Unique Ability
If the DC Universe on TV wants to be truly different, DC Studios should think about introducing Animal Man. Buddy Baker, also known as Animal Man, can mimic the abilities of any animal – gaining the strength of an ant or the speed of a gazelle. But what really sets him apart is his unique awareness: thanks to a famous comic book run, Baker knows he’s in a comic and frequently interacts with the story’s elements as if they’re real.
DC Comics has a great opportunity with a superhero who acknowledges they’re in a comic book. This character could offer clever commentary on superhero stories, but also delve into interesting questions about right and wrong – even questioning if they truly are a hero. If developed well by a skilled writer, this character, Baker, could become truly groundbreaking on television.
Black Canary Deserves A Second Chance
If the events of The Suicide Squad are considered official DC Universe canon, then Birds of Prey is also part of that continuity. Considering this, there’s potential for a compelling redemption arc for the character in the new DCU. The actress delivered a fantastic performance, and the character’s visual design was excellent, but the storyline didn’t fully utilize her potential, leaving her as a supporting character.
Jurnee Smollett’s portrayal of Dinah Lance deserves a future, even with the challenges faced by the DC Extended Universe. A TV series could allow her character to shine as a solo hero, continuing her story after the Birds of Prey film. The show could also introduce other characters and delve deeper into Black Canary’s life than the movie did.
The Question Could Lead The DCU Street-Level Layer
I’ve always been drawn to The Question. He’s not your typical flashy superhero; he’s a detective operating in a really gritty city called Hub City. What gets me is how real his cases feel – he deals with some seriously messed-up criminals and uncovers the absolute worst parts of humanity. Honestly, he’s one of the darkest, most complex characters in the DC universe, and that’s what I love about him.
His character is firmly rooted in the philosophy of objectivism, which grounds him in a very realistic way. He’s the kind of character who could easily star in a police procedural show, demonstrating that the DC Universe isn’t just about supervillains with lasers or kind aliens who can fly fast – it’s about compelling, down-to-earth stories too.
Static Remains A Fan Favorite
In the early 2000s, Milestone Media and DC Comics teamed up to create the show Static Shock. The series centered around Static, a teenage superhero named Virgil Hawkins, who had the power to control electricity. Static wasn’t just groundbreaking as the first Black superhero to headline his own TV series – he was a truly significant character.
Static Shock captured the hearts of a generation, becoming a beloved part of Saturday morning cartoons. While he first appeared in comic books, the animated series is what really made him famous, and he’s remained popular ever since. Now seems like the perfect time for DC to revisit the character with a live-action show, bringing his story full circle.
Manhunter Is Like DC’s Dexter
I first heard about Manhunter way back in 2004. It’s this really cool character, Kate Spencer, who’s a federal prosecutor. She got fed up with all the messed-up stuff she saw happening within the system, so she decided to become a vigilante and take matters into her own hands. What’s even cooler is how she gets her gear – she basically ‘repurposes’ stuff from the evidence room at work! It’s like a poetic justice thing, taking the tools of the system to fight against its corruption. Pretty awesome, right?
Many fans believe Kate Spencer, the Manhunter, deserves a better story. While her appearances have diminished to supporting roles in other characters’ comics, DC Studios has the opportunity to revive her. A Manhunter TV series could be a dark and compelling show, similar to Dexter, if DC recognizes Spencer’s potential and develops the character further.
Fans Want A New Swamp Thing In The DCU
Alec Holland was once a hopeful scientist, but an explosion destroyed his lab and turned him into the Swamp Thing – a surprisingly compassionate creature in the DC Universe. Now resembling a plant, he can communicate with and control all forms of plant life.
Despite being a relatively unknown character, Swamp Thing has been adapted into various media quite a few times. With James Gunn’s new DC Universe feeling like a major turning point, fans are eager to see more of the character and would welcome another adaptation. A TV series would be ideal, allowing for a deeper exploration of Alec Holland’s story than a movie could provide.
The Human Target Is A Bodyguard With Unusual Techniques
Christopher Chance isn’t your typical bodyguard. Instead of simply protecting people, he becomes them, stepping in to take the blame if trouble arises. He’s uniquely qualified for this job, possessing exceptional skills in disguise, martial arts, and shooting.
The Human Target is a unique character – he’s a spy who can also be an assassin or a bodyguard. While his stories are usually thrilling, he hasn’t become a widely known hero, despite two previous TV show attempts. If DC Studios decides to develop him, he’d be a strong fit for an action-packed series.
Zatanna Has Been Ignored For Way Too Long
Zatanna Zatara is a powerful character, though she doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves. Born with magical abilities, she can manipulate almost anything – from basic elements to complex energies – accomplishing feats beyond the reach of most heroes.
Despite being a hugely powerful magic user in the DC Universe, Zatanna hasn’t yet had a satisfying live-action adaptation. While Guillermo del Toro attempted to include her in a Justice League Dark movie, many fans think a TV series would be a better fit. This format could explore both her life as a superhero and her career as a performer, and finally explain how magic works within the DC Universe.
John Constantine’s Rogues Gallery Is A Thrilling Journey
Besides Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, John Constantine is a character many DC fans are hoping to see in the new DC Universe. He’s a clever, cynical detective who specializes in the occult and is known for his sharp wit and resourcefulness. Always with a cigarette in hand, and openly bisexual, Constantine brings a unique and compelling edge to the DC world, making his popularity understandable.
Constantine is a fascinating character, and his adventures are compelling as well. As someone who understands the occult and practices magic, he faces truly frightening enemies in the DC Universe, including witches, vampires, and demons. Because there are so many different threats he encounters, a Constantine TV show would be a better format to explore them all than a single movie.
