10 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Mechanics That Made Exploration Feel Truly Magical

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a foundational game for the Metroidvania genre – in fact, the term itself partly comes from its name! It’s beloved for many reasons, including its dark, gothic visuals, surprisingly complex combat, and memorable, though sometimes corny, dialogue. However, what truly makes the game special is how smoothly and satisfyingly you move and explore its world.

Alucard is quite nimble from the beginning, and as you play, unlocking new skills makes exploring the world much faster and more complete. Whether it’s leaping across large areas, climbing tall buildings, or simply moving a bit quicker, these abilities create a compelling gameplay loop that keeps you engaged – just like a great adventure game should.

10. Godspeed Boots

A Saturn-Exclusive Buff

After its debut on PlayStation in early 1997, Symphony of the Night was also released on the Sega Saturn in Japan the next year. While the Saturn version isn’t considered a top-tier port, it did include some additions and enhancements, most notably a new item called the Godspeed Boots which makes gameplay easier.

Alucard’s regular running speed is fairly slow, which is why players rely on other movement options and advanced techniques for speedrunning. The Godspeed Boots, found only in the Saturn version of the game, help with this by adding a dash ability – simply double-tap left or right to quickly move, much like Richter’s dash. While a minor addition, this allows for faster, more comfortable exploration without needing to constantly perform complex speedrunning maneuvers.

9. Double Jump

On a Wing and a Prayer

It’s common in Metroidvania games to find a platform you can’t quite reach, leaving you feeling stuck. You know you’re just missing a little extra jump height to open up new areas. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night has this same issue, and like many other games, it’s solved with the classic double jump.

The Leap Stone relic gives Alucard the ability to double jump, letting him reach higher platforms and adjust his jumps mid-air to avoid enemies or danger. It’s also visually impressive – his cape briefly transforms into large wings during the jump! While simple to use, unlocking the double jump is incredibly satisfying.

8. Dive Kick

Feet-First

Besides letting Alucard double jump, finding the Leap Stone in Symphony of the Night gives him another useful move: a dive kick. Officially, it’s called a “jump kick,” but it really looks and feels like a dive kick – it’s hard to imagine anyone watching it and thinking otherwise!

Alucard’s dive kick sends him hurtling diagonally downwards. Hitting an enemy with it launches him high into the air. This move can also be used to reach certain areas sooner than usual, which is helpful for speedrunning. Dive kicks are a fast way to descend, offering more speed and momentum than Alucard’s regular moves. And let’s be honest, they just look awesome!

7. Gravity Boots

Bang, Zoom, Straight to the Moon

The double jump is great for covering long distances and reaching platforms far away. However, it doesn’t provide much height, so it won’t help you reach things that are very high up. That’s where the Gravity Boots come in – they’re another item that helps you move around the game.

When Alucard wears the Gravity Boots, he can jump straight up with incredible force, defying gravity. He can repeat this jump as many times as he likes, as long as there’s space above him. Unlike a double jump, it doesn’t move him forward much, so it’s not true flight. However, if there’s a platform directly overhead, he can reach it easily. It’s also a surprisingly effective way to annoy the Librarian – Alucard can jump up and launch him into the ceiling from underneath, which he deserves!

6. Backdash

One Smooth Criminal

If I had to pick one defining move for Symphony of the Night, it would definitely be the backdash. Alucard begins the game with it, and unlike many abilities, it remains helpful and enjoyable throughout the entire experience.

The backdash is meant to be a quick dodge, but players rarely use it that way. Instead, repeatedly backdashing while facing away from your target allows you to slide across the ground much faster than walking. While there’s a short delay before you can backdash again, this can be bypassed by using a shield – the shield’s animation resets the backdash’s cooldown. This technique – rapidly alternating between backdashes and shield use – is a fundamental skill for anyone trying to speedrun Symphony of the Night, and it’s also a helpful way to move around the game more quickly.

5. Mist Form

Breathe It In

As Dracula’s son, Alucard can change his shape easily, but he’s more imaginative about it than his father. One of his most unusual abilities is transforming into Mist Form – he literally becomes a moving cloud of mist for a short time. It’s a magical ability, so there’s no need to question how it works!

Mist Form mainly lets Alucard squeeze through tight spaces like grates and vents, creating new paths he couldn’t reach otherwise. It’s a useful way to explore, and it becomes even better once you upgrade it. These upgrades let you stay in Mist Form as long as you have magic points, and also allow you to turn into a poisonous cloud that harms nearby enemies.

4. Wolf Form

Walk on the Wild Side

Okay, so Alucard can turn into mist, which is cool, but he’s also got some proper shapeshifting abilities! The first one you get in Symphony of the Night is the Wolf Form. It’s not quite a werewolf transformation, which is a little disappointing, it’s just a normal four-legged wolf. But honestly? It’s still awesome, maybe half as cool as a full werewolf, but I’m not complaining!

Alucard’s Wolf Form makes him much faster when moving across the ground. Because he’s closer to the ground, he’s harder to hit and can fit through tight spaces. He can also dash quickly, and with the Power of the Wolf upgrade, he can dash right through enemies without stopping. As long as he has enough MP and a clear path, he can dash continuously. The Skill of the Wolf upgrade also gives him the ability to swim, which is essential since Alucard can’t swim on his own.

3. Wolf Charge

Walk Faster on the Wild Side

I’ve been really enjoying the Wolf Form so far! It’s pretty versatile with all the basic abilities and upgrades. My only frustration was the dash – it’s super useful, but you really need to get some speed going first, which isn’t always easy if the area is cramped. Luckily, there’s this awesome spell called Wolf Charge that fixes that problem completely! It lets you dash instantly, which is a game changer.

You can only use Wolf Charge after unlocking the Power of the Wolf and Skill of the Wolf upgrades and buying the spell scroll. Once unlocked, while in Wolf Form, you can quickly activate it for an instant, fast dash with almost no delay. It uses a small amount of MP, but allows you to quickly move and jump long distances, even from tight spaces.

2. Bat Form

The Vampire Classic

Vampires are famous for drinking blood and shapeshifting into bats. Alucard is only half-vampire, meaning he doesn’t need to drink blood, but he can still transform. In the game Symphony of the Night, his Bat Form allows him to become a large, powerful vampire bat – a particularly handy ability.

Okay, so as a huge fan, the Bat Form is seriously awesome because it lets you fly! You can go up, down, and sideways – pretty much anywhere you want, as long as there aren’t any walls in your way, and you have enough magic power. And it gets even better with upgrades! You can shoot fireballs to protect yourself and even use sonar to see in completely dark rooms. It’s true that the Bat Form isn’t as strong in a fight as the Wolf Form, but honestly, the freedom it gives you to explore more than makes up for it. It’s just so much fun soaring around!

1. Wing Smash

Like an Aerial Shinespark

Similar to Wolf Form, Bat Form gains a special ability from a spell scroll that significantly improves both attack power and movement speed. This ability, called Wing Smash, lets you travel faster and cover more ground than anything else in the game. If you’ve played Metroid and enjoy the Shinespark ability, Wing Smash will feel similar, but with its own unique twist.

Once you unlock Wing Smash, you can quickly dash forward while moving, damaging enemies in your path. It’s Alucard’s fastest movement ability, perfect for getting around the castle quickly. You can even chain Wing Smashes together for continuous speed, like a fast-moving projectile. Just be aware that it uses a lot of MP, so you can’t use it endlessly. After all, nothing comes without a cost, not even transforming into a bat and flying at top speed!
