Viewers are loving the new live-action remake on Netflix! It’s become the most-watched title on the streaming service after only a day.
Currently, How to Train Your Dragon is the most popular movie on Netflix in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol. This comes after the film was available on another streaming service until recently.
When How to Train Your Dragon appeared on Netflix, it boosted the popularity of the entire series. The first two movies, How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), have both climbed back into the top 10 kids’ movies on the streaming service, landing at number 9 and number 10.
The live-action remake is doing well on Netflix outside the US, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, where it’s been in the Top 10 for a week, currently at number 4. Meanwhile, in Chile, How to Train Your Dragon is number 9 on HBO Max’s Top 10 list.
How to Train Your Dragon Was DreamWorks’ First Live-Action Remake
Disney has been reimagining its animated films for decades, but DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon is the first of their movies to get a live-action version. This new film closely follows the story of the critically acclaimed 2010 animated movie.
The movie How to Train Your Dragon takes place on the harsh island of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have always been at war. It tells the story of Hiccup (played by Mason Thames), the clever but underestimated son of the Viking chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler). Hiccup challenges a long-standing rivalry by becoming friends with Toothless, a dangerous and mysterious Night Fury dragon.
DreamWorks and Universal’s live-action film was a big success, earning praise from critics and over $636 million at the global box office. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 77% approval rating, indicating generally positive reviews.
Because the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon film is still popular on streaming services, Universal and DreamWorks were smart to quickly begin work on a sequel. Filming started last month in London, and this new movie will be based on the story from the animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2.
The cast of the upcoming sequel includes returning actors Thomasin McKenzie, Millie Bobby Brown, Nico Parker, Louis Partridge, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. They’ll be joined by Cate Blanchett, reprising a role she previously voiced in How to Train Your Dragon 2, and .
How to Train Your Dragon is currently streaming on Netflix.
