1 Dragon Ball Z Character Is ‘Deeper the More You Think About Him’, According to Official Voice Actor

In the Daima anime, Supreme Kai joins Goku and his friends on their journey through the Demon Realm. Although Daima voice actress Yumiko Kobayashi admits that Kai isn’t the main character, she thinks he’s a surprisingly complex figure that many viewers don’t fully appreciate.

Kobayashi talked about this topic, and others, in an interview with the cast and staff made for the Japanese Blu-ray release of Dragon Ball Daima. The interview was later translated into English and shared on X (previously Twitter) by Dragon Ball fan reporter Enormis (@Venixys). “I believe Supreme Kai (Mini) is a character who becomes more complex the more you consider him,” Kobayashi stated. “It really stood out when Supreme Kai explained that his job is to ‘maintain peace and order in the universe,’ and this time it made me rethink his importance.”

Dragon Ball Anime Star Says Supreme Kai Became More Likeable in New Show

Supreme Kai (also known as Shin) first appeared as a powerful protector of Earth and the Other World in Universe 7. His primary job is to support Goku and Vegeta as they battle the wizard Babidi and his somewhat childish assistant. Because of the rules tied to his position, Supreme Kai once again acts as a guide and observer in Daima, letting Goku do most of the fighting. “He [Supreme Kai] seems to watch over us like a parent, a sibling, and sometimes a friend, but it’s frustrating that he can’t directly help and can only observe,” Kobayashi noted. In this series, his circumstances are further complicated by the fact that two of his siblings, Degesu and Dr. Arinsu, are .

Now acting as a support player, Supreme Kai helps the team by sharing knowledge about the Demon Realm. As one of the Glind, a race recently introduced to the story, he used to live there with his family before becoming a Kai and taking on those duties. He’s always been expressive, showing feelings like annoyance during the “Buu” arc, but Kobayashi thinks he comes across as particularly wistful and sad in Daima, more so than in earlier appearances. “I found a touching quality in Supreme Kai’s expressions, which made me appreciate the character even more,” she explained.

I’m so excited that Dragon Ball Daima is finally out and you can stream it right now on Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll! And if you’re like me and want to revisit the classics, you can find all the other Dragon Ball anime – like the original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and even Dragon Ball GT – on Hulu and Crunchyroll too. For those who prefer reading, Akira Toriyama’s amazing Dragon Ball manga and its continuation, Dragon Ball Super, are both available in English from VIZ Media. It’s a great time to be a Dragon Ball fan!
