Following their extensive involvement in the investigation surrounding John O’Keefe’s demise, the Canton Police Department in Massachusetts is now encountering the anger of those backing Karen Read.
In the following days after O’Keefe’s death, Read faced charges for manslaughter and second-degree murder, as authorities claimed that she struck her boyfriend with her SUV in the wee hours of January 29, 2022.
In the recently released documentary series “A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read,” her legal team presents an alternative theory. According to them, Read is not the perpetrator but rather a victim herself. They allege that O’Keefe was murdered inside the home of former Boston police officer Brian Albert on that fateful night.
On both ends, there are ongoing accusations due to the fact that the previous court case concluded as a mistrial last year. Meanwhile, the momentum behind the #JusticeForKarenRead campaign remains undiminished, which has significantly affected the standing of the Canton Police Department in public opinion.
Karen Read supporters slam “corrupt” Canton Police Department

At present, the Canton Police Department is rated 1.6 stars on Google, due to numerous disgruntled reviews alleging instances of police corruption within their ranks.
Initially, the Canton Police arrived on the scene where O’Keefe was found near the Albert residence, and they played a crucial role in establishing a secure perimeter and collecting initial evidence for further investigation.
Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that Brian Albert has a sibling named Kevin, who is a detective within the police force. Notably, last year, there was an announcement that Kevin had been temporarily relieved of his duties and placed on paid leave, following his involvement in a case he worked with Trooper Michael Proctor, who was tasked with the Read case.
After the “degrading” texts Proctor had exchanged with his friends regarding Read were uncovered during his probe, he was dismissed from his position as an investigator for the Massachusetts State Police in March 2025.
Prior to Read’s second court hearing, her backers persist in voicing their disapproval towards the different entities associated with the case, among them being the Canton Police Department.
In the comments section on Google Reviews, someone stated, “The local police department is a complete farce! They falsely accused an innocent woman and shielded your own actions. We’re not fooled, we can see right through your deceit! It’s clear that evidence was fabricated, manipulated, and destroyed!
It’s puzzling that you didn’t express any emotions towards Officer John O’Keefe, but you attended the funeral of an unknown officer. Yet, you failed to attend a funeral of someone close to you. This situation seems troubling to me and I hope the authorities, specifically the FBI, look into it promptly.
A person remarked, “If the department and everyone involved would prefer an innocent woman to be imprisoned instead of the real culprit, it’s not surprising that some lose faith in the police, seeing them committing perjury over and over again day after day.
This place is riddled with corruption; it’s high time for a complete overhaul. I’d advise keeping your distance from this town and its police department, as they’re more likely to fabricate charges against you than uphold the law. They’re the kind of officers that give all cops a bad name. Let’s work towards changing the negative perception.
Your defense seems to be crumbling. Spin the narrative as you see fit, but understand that we’re not backing down… We’re not giving up,” said a third party. “How long will you continue spinning tales before it feels real enough? How many more fallen officers will it take for you to stand tall and show your courage?
A voice added, “The behavior displayed was shockingly unprofessional and the lack of competence in conducting investigations is alarming. It seems everyone employed at the Canton Police Department should be dismissed.
Farewell, John O’Keefe. It’s deeply regrettable that due to the alleged unimaginable corruption within the Canton Police Department, your family may never fully understand what transpired for you.
Karen Read hearing could delay second trial

The scheduled date for the second Karen Read trial in April 2025 might get postponed after a court hearing on March 18th.
According to CBS News, the hearing primarily aimed at establishing guidelines for the forthcoming trial.
During the proceedings, Judge Beverly Cannone issued a firm admonishment to the defense team, highlighting their frequent instances of “misleading the court” regarding the ARCCA witnesses, which was a point brought up during the initial trial.
In simpler terms, the experts called as witnesses by the ARCCA (Accident Reconstruction Consultant Association) were part of the federal investigation into accusations of corruption. They were summoned by the defense team and presented their findings in court, stating that O’Keefe’s injuries didn’t match up with what typically occurs in a car accident.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: During the trial, they claimed their witnesses were impartial and uncompensated, but an invoice popped up showing they had been paid. Despite Cannone’s warning, she didn’t replace any of Read’s lawyers before the second round of court proceedings.
At Tuesday’s court proceedings, the defense asked for a postponement of the trial, as they wait for the Federal First Circuit Court of Appeals to decide if they should drop two charges against Read – one being second-degree murder.
Despite the initial trial resulting in a deadlock among the jurors (a hung jury), juror Ronald “Ronnie” Estanislao had shared with TopMob earlier that they felt they hadn’t been sufficiently instructed that they could handle each charge individually.
Indeed, the 12 jurors collectively arrived at a consensus on counts one and three. They concurred that Read was innocent of second-degree murder and failure to remain at the scene after causing personal injury and death.
They disagreed on the issue of manslaughter versus Operating Under the Influence (OUI). Had the jury been made aware they could handle each charge individually, Read would have faced a retrial solely for the manslaughter charge. However, due to this oversight, a fresh jury and trial are now necessary for all three charges.
He expressed his firm conviction that a new trial is necessary, considering the recent events, as it appears that the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision on any of the three charges.
Unfortunately, although it may seem otherwise, we didn’t officially register a vote in favor of charge one and charge three. Therefore, according to legal documentation, it appears that we were unable to reach a verdict on any of the three charges, which can be interpreted as a hung jury for all three.
Given that, I believe the events leading up to this situation were avoidable, and it’s unfortunate that the justice system didn’t make things more straightforward. We find ourselves in a position where a retrial seems necessary due to unclear instructions.
Currently, it remains uncertain if Cannone will postpone the retrial or drop the two charges, as all parties are carefully examining the details.
