As a devoted fan and supporter, I’m thrilled to share that I, Chris Monfette – a writer and producer known for my work on “Star Trek: Picard,” “12 Monkeys,” and the forthcoming “Marvel’s Vision” – am preparing to unveil a genre-blending book in collaboration with comics powerhouse Dark Horse.
Starting July 23, the debut issue of “TexArcanum” unfolds, introducing Avery Belle, a unique character who blends cowboy skills with arcane abilities. Recruited by Native American law enforcement, she embarks on a mission to avert an impending apocalypse triggered by a centuries-old land dispute that has stirred supernatural powers. Compared to the fusion of “Yellowstone” and “The X-Files”, this four-issue journey, beautifully illustrated by Miguel Martos, skillfully combines elements of fantasy storytelling with American frontier folklore.
The cover of issue #1 perfectly encapsulates the miniseries’ eclectic inspirations.
Monfette stated that the typical definition of horror in America is frequently rooted in Western European fears, such as vampires, werewolves, and ghosts from the Victorian era. However, he emphasized that America consists of diverse communities who’ve brought their unique folklore with them. As a result, he developed ‘TexArcanum’ to blend unconventional mythologies within the setting of the American Midwest.
TexArcanum” signals Monfette’s comeback to the comic industry following his partnership with Clive Barker on a graphic adaptation of Barker’s “Hellraiser” saga. Previously, he was involved as a writer and co-producer in all four seasons of the Syfy series “12 Monkeys.” Later, he shifted to “Star Trek: Picard” and the upcoming Netflix animated series based on “Magic: The Gathering.” At present, Monfette is engaged in the development of “Marvel’s Vision,” slated for release on Disney+ in 2026.

Monfette stated that the series blends various mythologies together, not only as a base for upcoming stories featuring underrepresented characters and cultures, but also delves into unique cultural pockets and folklore that define our nation. As Monfette put it, “Avery might don a cowboy hat, drive a pick-up, and possess the dry wit of a Midwestern noir-private investigator, yet he traverses through uncharted territories of culture and mythology that are quintessential America.
I’m eagerly anticipating ‘TexArcanum’, as it seems like a space where both myself and other authors from various cultural backdrops might craft narratives that mirror genres I’ve longed to discover but have yet to find.”
or, more colloquially:
“I can’t wait for ‘TexArcanum’, it looks like a place where me and writers with different experiences could create stories in genres I’ve always wanted but never found before.
Issue #1 of “TexArcanum” hits newsstands July 23.
