As a longtime Marvel fan and avid follower of the ever-evolving MCU landscape, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming Wonder Man TV show! Having grown up reading the comics, Simon Williams always stood out as a unique character with an intriguing backstory – from his initial alliance with Baron Zemo to his eventual redemption and heroic deeds alongside the Avengers.
Marvel is expanding its television lineup with a fresh series focusing on the less prominent character, Wonder Man.
In all the hype surrounding Daredevil: Born Again, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Marvel Zombies, it’s possible that some may have overlooked the character Wonder Man.
Beyond what’s apparent about this character, there’s a lot more depth to explore. The forthcoming Marvel series might just take meta-ness to a whole new level.
Here’s everything you need to know about Wonder Man’s comic book origins and his new show.
Who is Wonder Man?
In the world of Marvel Comics, Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, made his debut in issue 9 of The Avengers. At first, he was a villain who clashed with the team.
In October 1964, the comic introduced Wonder Man as an adversary limited to just one issue, where he met his demise in the very same publication.
Originally, Wonder Man was discontinued following his first appearance due to a lawsuit against Marvel Comics over the character’s resemblance to DC Comics’ Wonder Woman.
Back in 1978, Stan Lee expressed his thoughts as follows: “You see, we previously released Wonder Man, but DC Comics took us to court because they already had Wonder Woman. I agreed to stop publishing Wonder Man. But look at this, shortly after Marvel introduced Power Man, DC came out with Power Girl. Isn’t that just not fair?
Four years ago, I was gone, but the Avengers managed something extraordinary. They digitized my consciousness, keeping me alive in a virtual world until they could bring me back.
He didn’t fully return until The Avengers issue 102 from 1972, appearing briefly while unconscious. Later, in issues 131 and 132 of The Avengers, he was resurrected by Kang. Then, in issue 152, Black Talon brought him back to life again.
It wasn’t until The Avengers Annual #6 that he would completely regain consciousness; it was then that the Living Laser resurrected him.
In issue #106 of The Avengers, Wonder Man attained consciousness and officially became a permanent member of the team as a superhero. Notably, he was close friends with Beast from the X-Men, often spending time together off duty. (Their friendship persisted even after they both departed from the Avengers.)
Later on, this character joined the ranks as an original member of the West Coast Avengers, which was a comic series spinoff. Over time, he intermittently returned to the core Avengers team, and ultimately received his own titled comic book, “The Solo Adventures of [Character’s Name],” in 1986.
It’s worth mentioning that in 1981, Wonder Man decided to leave the Avengers team to make use of his superhuman abilities as a stuntman and actor.
Wonder Man’s origins explained
As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to share a fascinating fact about Wonder Man. You might not know this, but his true identity is Simon Williams, the affluent offspring of Sanford Williams. In an extraordinary turn of events orchestrated by the villainous Baron Heinrich Zemo, he was released from prison, leading to a transformation that granted him superhuman abilities.
Just as I found myself stepping into my dad’s shoes at Williams Innovations after he was gone, I found myself going head-to-head with the mighty Stark Industries. Let me tell you, it wasn’t a walk in the park! My company’s profits began to crumble under the weight of that competition.
Eric, Simon’s brother, proposed a scheme where they would misuse corporate funds to finance other business opportunities. However, this plan backfired, and he was eventually apprehended and taken into custody for carrying out the act.
Recognizing Stark’s fall, Simon agrees to work with Baron Zemo under the proviso that he gains access to the Avengers by infiltrating their ranks.
When Zemo’s scheme unfolds, I find myself undergoing extraordinary transformations thanks to some chemical and radiation treatments. Suddenly, I’m gifted with unparalleled strength, resilience, speed, and agility – powers that have been likened to those wielded by Thor and Sentry.
Over the years, he would also develop abilities in regeneration, the capacity to go without air, food, and water, and energy projection.
However, what makes Wonder Man particularly intriguing is his established role as a skilled stuntman and performer within the Marvel universe, hinting at potential use of these talents in the forthcoming Marvel series (further details to follow!).
What is the Wonder Man Marvel show about?
In December 2025, a TV series called “The Adventures of Wonder Man” is set to premiere, featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II portraying the character Simon Williams/Wonder Man.
Initially, the character was intended to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but Nathan Fillion’s performance was ultimately excluded from the film’s final edit.
The upcoming Marvel TV series focuses on the character Simon Williams, portraying both an actor and stuntman. As events unfold, he develops extraordinary powers that transform him into the superhero known as Wonder Man. In October 2024, a tantalizing sneak peek was unveiled for the Marvel lineup scheduled for 2025, featuring a glimpse of Wonder Man.

It appears that Simon is attempting to secure the role of Wonder Man in an impending film, suggesting that perhaps he possesses superhuman abilities within this TV series, as his comic book counterpart had already assumed the identity of Wonder Man prior to pursuing an acting career.
The show additionally features Ben Kingsley returning as Trevor Slattery, a character he played in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Demetrius Grosse is cast as Eric Williams, Simon’s brother, while Ed Harris takes on the role of Neal Saroyan, Simon’s representative.
The show will have ten episodes and be released on Disney+.
Will he be part of the MCU?
Yes, Wonder Man will be included in Phase 6 of the MCU!
Including Trevor Slattery indicates that Simon Williams may be adapting to a pre-existing variant of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In other words, this could imply potential implications for his future storylines, not just in the upcoming television series.
Under Marvel’s “Spotlight” strategy for their TV shows and movies, it seems his character won’t take on a leading role like many expect. But given his significant presence in the Avengers comic book arcs, we have reason to believe he will still play a substantial part in these narratives.
Although Wonder Man might not play a significant part in the upcoming films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”, given that he is set to debut prior to these movies, it’s possible we’ll see him as a well-established character instead.
