Valve Removes App Form Steam That Allows Access to Epic Games Store and GOG on Steam Deck

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment at Valve’s decision to pull Junky Store from Steam. I’ve always appreciated Valve’s openness and flexibility, allowing third-party applications like this to coexist within their ecosystem.

It appears that SteamHQ noticed that the Junky Store app, which enables users to install games from outside the Steam store onto the Steam Deck, has been taken down from the platform. This was confirmed by the team in a post they made on Reddit.

The program was a commercial version of a free plugin of the same name, and both releases offered a similar function – the ability to install games from Epic Games Store on the Steam Deck. The differences included: support for games purchased on GOG.com (although this option was supposed to be added to the free version sooner or later), and above all, installation without the need to switch to desktop mode, and of course, the price. This last one was supposed to enable the creators to “take Junky Store to a new level”.

In the announcement announcing the launch on Steam, they mentioned that the team is simply waiting for Valve to complete their detailed inspection of the application. However, at that time, one of the company’s employees had already assessed the game known as Junky Store‘s card and granted the developers permission for a debut on Steam. Yet, this was not yet an official decision.

It seems that Valve has determined that Steam is not suitable to host Junky Store, as they cannot envision a way for it to coexist in the future. The main issue lies in the fact that the application would need to modify Steam, which could allow harmful software to gain access. While Valve does not criticize the intentions of the developers, the introduction of such an extension was deemed potentially hazardous.

To clarify, just because the Junky Store is temporarily inactive, it doesn’t imply that it’s no longer accessible for players. The developers of the application have chosen to take a pause (which seems understandable), but the plugin can still be downloaded directly from their official website.
