As a die-hard fan of Junji Ito’s work, I have been eagerly awaiting the premiere of Uzumaki for five long years. The anticipation was palpable, and the first episode delivered a chilling, spine-tingling experience that left me on the edge of my seat.
After five long years of waiting, “Uzumaki” finally debuted in September, but some viewers have noticed a decline in its initial quality across the first two episodes. Now, a producer is breaking their silence on the matter.
According to the renowned manga artist Junji Ito, Uzumaki was eagerly anticipated among upcoming anime series for those who love horror. The anime follows the adaptation of one of his most intricate stories, where a town becomes distorted by an enigmatic curse revolving around metaphysical spirals.
The situation is odd and unnerving, potentially ideal for a TV series given certain conditions. It appeared that’s the direction things were heading when Adult Swim and Production IG announced their collaboration for a four-episode remake, but unfortunately, the final product didn’t meet anyone’s expectations.
Following an impressive debut, the second installment exhibits a noticeable decline in quality. The animation appears blurred and sluggish, fueling criticisms of compromised production values and speculation about the circumstances leading to this drop-off. Jason DeMarco, Executive Producer on Uzumaki, hinted at problems behind the scenes in now-deleted posts on BlueSky, suggesting a potential collapse of the project.
Jason Demarco said some stuff regarding the quality dip with Uzumaki over on Bluesky:

We found ourselves in a difficult situation where we had three choices: A) not proceed at all and consider it a failure, B) finish only the first episode and leave the rest unfinished, or C) complete all four episodes, flaws and all. Ultimately, we decided to go with option C as a mark of respect for the effort put in.
He adds that “somebody is definitely at fault here”, but he can’t point fingers or reveal more about what happened. “We all just had to do our best when things imploded. Maybe others would have made different choices. We did the best we could with what we had,” he said.
Many individuals put a tremendous amount of effort into this production, and it’s unfair to let the actions of a few spoil it for everyone, as it never got its chance to be released,” he remarked.
The second episode of Uzumaki has received a torrent of criticism and humorously negative comments as more viewers tune in, with one comment stating, “The decline in quality for Uzumaki: Episode 2 is unbelievable! It’s almost like a mean trick, considering how well Episode 1 was executed.
“My day is ruined…” said another post, with a clip of one scene.
