Among the 51 movies set for production in 2025, three titles include “The Community,” “Warner Bros.’ Cut Off,” and an as-yet unnamed film from the Daniels, are recipients of tax incentives through California‘s Film and Television Tax Credit Program.
The California Film Commission broke its own record by granting tax credits worth $330 million to 51 different films. This is anticipated to stimulate approximately $580 million in economic growth, provide jobs for over 6,490 cast and crew members, as well as 37,000 background actors. The upcoming Daniels project by Universal is projected to invest around $106.8 million into California’s economy, eligible for $20.8 million in tax credits. Meanwhile, the “Community” movie is expected to contribute $16.3 million and secure a credit allocation of $3.3 million. Lastly, “Cut Off” is estimated to inject $49.4 million into California’s economy, receiving a tax credit of $10 million.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but be deeply concerned about the catastrophic wildfires ravaging Southern California. The destructive blazes have posed unprecedented hurdles for our film and television fraternity, bringing a halt to over a dozen productions within the Film & Television Tax Credit Program and affecting countless others. This disruption has rippled through every aspect of production, from scheduling and finances to housing and location access.
In these trying times, this program serves as an indispensable resource for our industry’s recovery, preserving jobs and investments within our beloved state. It ensures that California continues to be the pulsating heart of the entertainment world.
2025’s distribution plan features a lineup of 46 autonomous films, along with 5 non-autonomous ones. Thirty-one of these productions will be filmed outside of Los Angeles, accumulating over 360 filming days across Contra Costa, Oakland, Ojai, Merced, and San Diego Counties.
We currently don’t have any specific details about the untitled Universal film directed by the duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, commonly known as the Daniels. The only information available is its expected release date on June 12, 2026. Similarly, the upcoming “Community” movie has been shrouded in secrecy. However, series creator Dan Harmon hinted to EbMaster in February 2024 that the script for this project was almost completed.
There’s talk that Jonah Hill might both direct and act in a movie called “Cut Off,” produced by Warner Bros. It seems Jennifer Lawrence has been proposed to join him on screen. The story revolves around two energetic, affluent twins who find themselves unexpectedly cut off from their family wealth, leaving them to navigate life on their own.
