The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Hot-Pot Stirrers

In the first two episodes of the new season, there are two major plotlines within the group, and surprisingly, Tammy Sue Waddle Barney Judge is caught up in both. This is why she’s considered one of the all-time greats, while Gretchen Christine Rossi is still finding her footing after a decade-long break. She thinks she’s prepared to engage in conflict? Darling, things have evolved significantly since your departure, and if you’re merely trying to resolve issues from season eight, it might not capture our attention as much.

Tamra’s ongoing narrative revolves around the situation with Katie. Tamra feels upset because Katie contacted a blogger who was spreading untrue stories about her. Later, Tamra meets Emily and Gina for lymphatic massage sessions. During this time, a mechanical device, resembling a spinning robot, seems to bring them closer to climax than John Janssen has ever managed with any woman in his lifetime. Tamra informs Emily and Gina that Katie filmed Shannon during their “gallery shoot” last year. This is the photo session for all press images of the season, usually conducted after the season is shot but before it airs. We saw a similar scenario on the latest season of RHONY, when all the women stopped communicating with Brynn.

It seems that Shannon and Katie were using the same changing room. Two hours late, Shannon found herself in an uncomfortable situation – sharing space with Alexis Bellino. Just like Archie Beador can’t hide his love for being the top boy in the universe, it appeared Shannon had a strong reaction to this encounter. She let loose with loud outbursts and colorful language towards various producers, assistants, and anyone who happened to be within her sightline. While I may have reacted similarly if faced with “Jesus Jugs,” under these circumstances, I’ll give Shannon some understanding.

In my own words, let me share an intriguing piece of information I once learned from Katie. She was engrossed in a conversation with her husband when she suddenly ended the call and began recording Shannon’s dramatic outburst instead. Later on, she shared that video with Alexis. You see, at a time when our friendship was stronger, Katie confided this incident to me, and I kept it in my memory bank for such moments as these. Now, it seems the moment has arrived.

I’ve recently discussed this with Emily and Gina, but there’s a catch: I can’t share it with Shannon right now because she might suspect I’m just stirring up trouble due to our ongoing disagreements. (This particular conflict stems from a time when I called her a heavy drinker and supported Alexis and John during their lawsuit against her. It’s becoming increasingly challenging to keep track of all these interconnected conflicts.)

In this social gathering at Katie’s hot-pot lunch, Gina assumes the role of a truth-teller. Equipped with stylish Lee Press-on Nails, she decides to share an uncomfortable truth about their past. At the Golden Door event last week, Gina clarifies that they didn’t gang up on Katie, but rather, Katie has hurt each one of them individually. It was then that she confides in Shannon about Katie recording her. This revelation leaves Shannon astonished, as she can’t fathom why her friend would disclose such sensitive information, especially given the ongoing lawsuit, not to mention secretly filming her and sharing the footage with others.

In this situation, things start to seem strange regarding Katie. She claims the evidence was an audio message instead of a video, which is where she tends to blur the truth for deception. Katie presents some truth to gain sympathy, but everything else seems unclear. Katie asserts that she only shared the voice-note with Matt originally. However, when Tamra brings up the fact that Alexis also heard it, Katie admits to playing it for Alexis and Jenn during a gathering, but then questions whether Jenn truly remembers it or if Katie embellished the detail since Jenn can’t recall it. In a private reflection, Katie confesses to recording the message, explaining her anger because Shannon spoiled what was meant to be an enjoyable day for everyone.

Katie always does this – she claims she’ll be honest with you to end the interrogation, but being honest doesn’t lead to the truth; it just takes you further and further away from it. It’s like descending into a mine shaft, each level sinking deeper into the earth, until you’re enveloped in darkness without knowing how you got there, where you are now, or on which level the truth might be hidden.

When Shannon listens to everything, she rises from her seat and departs, as she’s “contemplating” it all. It seems that she processes information at a pace similar to a Commodore 64 and requires solitude during these moments. Given the sneak peek for next week, this appears to be the “forbidden” act that Katie performed, which ultimately destroys their friendship. It’s typical of Shannon that Katie has faced troubles with many others, but Shannon stood by her until it affected Shannon. Now, Shannon has been deeply wounded by Katie, and as expected, this incident will push Shannon back into the embrace of Tamra.

Another narrative thread that features Tamra involves her and the comeback contender, Gretchen Rossi. However, this time it’s not quite the same. Instead, it appears as if karma is coming back to bite Tamra, with repercussions for some of her past wrongdoings returning like a sharp boomerang.

It’s hard for me to decide if I’m comfortable with Gretchen returning. She wasn’t my top pick among the Housewives, yet she excelled in her role and was a key figure in many compelling stories during the early seasons of RHOC. However, something seems different about her now. For instance, she’s been praying over meals, quoting Bible verses, and wearing a cross around her neck – she’s always been religious, but it feels like she’s making a point of it. (I’d rather not touch upon their political views because I suspect they’re all quite diverse, but there’s definitely an air of MAGA sentiment emanating from her that reminds me of overripe Jean Naté.)

Gretchen claims her face remains unaltered from what it was, while I typically avoid discussing physical aspects of women, she herself mentioned this, stating that she hasn’t undergone any plastic surgery or significantly changed her appearance. However, it’s worth noting that her assertion about not changing isn’t entirely accurate, as her hairstyle appears to be the same as it was during the last reunion 11 years ago. Intriguingly, her hair seems untouched, as if she merely put her wig back on after the reunion without any modifications or movement since then.

In the opening scene, I meet Gretchen for the first time as she dines with Slade Smiley, a man transformed from a witch’s familiar, along with Jenn, Ryan, Katie, and Matt. Initially, Matt was reluctant to engage with Ryan due to last year’s rumors, but once they became acquainted, those concerns seemed to vanish – even overlooking his questionable taste in jackets!

Interestingly, it was Jenn who contacted Gretchen for aid in managing conflicts with Tamra during the previous season. This situation, involving allegations and counter-allegations, forms the foundation for this season’s drama. Each character seems to follow a similar pattern – reaching out to bloggers, former castmates, and even enemies – to share tales, fabrications, and gossip, much like children passing around a cold in an overcrowded daycare center. It’s puzzling how they can express outrage when their own actions mirror these very behaviors!

During the dinner, Gretchen immediately accuses Tamra of being a notorious liar and manipulator; she begins to insult her and dig up old disputes. The things Tamra did to Gretchen in the past were truly despicable. Recall when Tamra and Victoria Denise Gunvalson Jr. conspired to get Gretchen “extremely drunk” so that Gretchen would cheat on her fiancé, who was terminally ill with cancer, with Tamra’s 21-year-old son Ryan? Recall when Tamra persistently insinuated that Gretchen was only with that man for his money? It was all distasteful, it was all awful, and Gretchen has every reason to despise Tamra and never forgive her.

Recently, there are additional claims being made. Previously, Tamra frequently accused Slade of neglecting his son Grayson, who faced health issues throughout his life. Tragically, Grayson passed away from a brain tumor at age 22 in 2023. On her podcast, Gretchen claims that Tamra asserted the mother had to create a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses because Slade wasn’t providing support. However, Gretchen aims to set the record straight not only about this specific instance but also to dispel the notion of Slade being an absent father entirely; she wishes for such claims to be removed from online sources. Yet, a quick search reveals that Grayson’s mother has criticized both Gretchen and Slade in the media on her own accord, with Tamra seemingly reinforcing these sentiments but not originating them.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, let me rephrase the situation from my perspective: While Gretchen is meticulously building her case, I find myself at Tamra’s house, along with Heather Dubrow who’s been a friend-of-the-series this season. In our casual conversation, Tamra reveals that Gretchen reached out to her estranged daughter, Sydney. Upon further discussion, it transpires that this contact was merely a public response to a public Facebook post made by Sydney, expressing her feelings against her mother.

At the heated lunch gathering, it turned into a cycle of accusations between them, with Gretchen resurfacing an old argument from 2010 when she claimed that Tamra had called Slade a deadbeat dad. But sister, that gossip is as dry as ancient tea, it’s lost all substance, leaving only an empty cup and a bare saucer behind. She’s just stirring up the embers, rekindling it for today’s audience instead of letting Tamra do something freshly wrong to her. Patience, and it will surely happen.

Later, Tamra mentions that Gretchen reached out to her daughter, and Gretchen responds by distinguishing a comment from direct action. While Gretchen didn’t make an effort equivalent to having dinner with the daughter, it’s still something that could potentially fan the flames of their ongoing disagreement if she wasn’t intending to continue it. It’s different when fans engage in this topic, but when Gretchen does, it lends it more weight and validity. In essence, it’s similar to Tamra discussing Slade on her podcast.

It’s astonishing how this confrontation unfolds. They’re all entangled in the same transgression, inflicting the same pain on each other. If one deserves punishment for her wrongdoings, then the other should face the same fate. Yet, everyone at that table is quick to accuse, yet they are all tainted themselves. It’s like a vicious cycle, a swirling current pulling them all down towards the abyss of their own making. However, in the midst of this storm, Tamra Judge stands out, a beacon of calm, the only one who has learned to rise above the chaos instead of being swept away by it.
