The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- TGS 2024 gameplay shows off characters and suicide attacks

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for strategy RPGs and a soft spot for anime-inspired narratives, I was thoroughly intrigued by the unveiling of Too Kyo Games’ upcoming masterpiece, The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-. The creative mind behind Danganronpa, Kazutaka Kodaka, has once again weaved an engaging tale that seems to be a fusion of school life and survival, with a dash of supernatural elements.

At the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, Too Kyo Games unveiled their upcoming strategy RPG titled “The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-“. For the very first time, creator Kazutaka Kodaka, voice actor Taihi Kimura (portraying protagonist Takumi), and actor Kanata Hongo presented a live gameplay demonstration of it. The preview offered glimpses into early stages of the game and displayed its battle system, specifically featuring “The Hundred Line‘s” combat mechanics.

Below, you’ll find an archived live-translation demo stream that starts at the 10-minute point. If you prefer the original, untranslated stream, it’s available here.

The stream unveils the fundamental concept of the game, which was initially sketched out when “The Hundred Line” was disclosed in June 2024. Takumi Sumino, an average young man, finds his ordinary life turned upside down by the arrival of peculiar monsters. To safeguard his childhood friend Karua, he accepts a “Gakuryokutou” weapon from SIREI, a whimsical creature who presents herself as his commander. Upon plunging the sword into himself, he awakens a mysterious power and is transported to the Last Defense Academy, an enigmatic school encircled by flames that perpetually burn. SIREI conscripts fifteen youngsters into the Special Defense Squad, tasking them with defending the school from the monstrous attacks for 100 days, so they can return to their normal lives.

In The Hundred Line, a total of fifteen playable characters are available, each gaining combat abilities upon inserting the Gakuryokutou into their chests. Apart from Takumi, the demo scenes and battle sequences showcase three additional characters: Darumi Amemiya, a girl with an exposed jawline who enjoys death games, Takemaru Yakushiji, a tough biker, and Hiruko Shizuhara, a stern, no-nonsense woman. Eito Aotsuki, the fourth character, seems to be voiced by Megumi Ogata (known for her roles as Makoto Naegi and Nagito Komaeda in the Danganronpa games). However, details about their personality and role in the story are being kept under wraps by Kodaka.

In terms of strategic combat, “The Hundred Line” emphasizes tactical grid-based, turn-based battles, where each group is tasked with shielding a tower on a school campus from hordes of monsters. Given that the monsters far outnumber the defenders, it’s crucial to strategically position characters and effectively manage the areas of impact for each character’s abilities to protect the tower. Each character possesses a unique weapon and skillset: Takumi can slice through single rows with his sword, Hiruko has a short reach but can eliminate individual targets with her axe, Darumi can target groups safely using her ranged skills, and Takemaru can crush numerous enemies in a circle around himself thanks to his motorcycle.

The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- will launch on PC and Switch on April 24, 2024 in Japan.
