The Forever Winter Factions Explained

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for post-apocalyptic settings and a soft spot for intricate lore, I must say that The Forever Winter has piqued my interest. Having survived countless wastelands, I’ve seen my fair share of factions vying for power in a world ravaged by war.

At times, when developers respond to fan demands, it can lead to unintended consequences, as seen with The Forever Winter. Following favorable alpha tests, fans requested an Early Access version of the game. However, while TFW is lauded for its intriguing mechanics and captivating world-building, its production has been criticized for issues such as low frame rates, crashes, connectivity problems like joining friends’ matches, or payment complications. Despite these technical flaws, let’s delve deeper into the game’s strong points, particularly exploring the factions battling in an eternal conflict over a ravaged environment.

Factions in The Forever Winter explained

In the merciless realm of The Forever Winter, a war has been persisting for many years. But what’s the cause? Who are the combatants and why do they find themselves in this stalemate? Unfortunately, the origins of the conflict remain unclear within the game’s lore. However, we can identify the opposing factions in the struggle. Let’s draw some lines between these hostile groups to better understand their identities and objectives.

  1. Europa – a mega country including former North America and West Europe regions is a technologically advanced faction focused on cybernetics and huge war machines. While Europa territories have been made unable to grow any crops, the protein synthesized food is their daily bread. Civilians are under oppression of militant government while still going to work, shopping yet they can’t get far from their homes. While conscription is not mandatory, being a soldier still gives more freedom than trying to live outside of military.
  2. Eurasia, another conglomerate of most East and some of Central Asia is no less technologically advanced than Europa. However, their most focus is put on bio and agrotech allowing to grow engineered crops. Their forces consist of biologically altered humans who are now more cyborgs than men. On the frontlines they fight to earn their maintenance and be able to live another day. The flesh needed to be converted into war-droids is “obtained” from poorer citizens of this region are treated as meat to be enhanced by exoskeletons.
  3. Euruska is a federation of former Slavic States and parts of Africa. They have taken Eurasian side of the conflict and pushed it to the extreme. Their forces are biomechanical atrocities that treat humans as a material to be sculpted. Most of the population lives in slums and shantytowns or in the undergrounds of the ruined Lost Angeles. This faction’s civilians have learned to survive near the frontlines by joining private military companies, becoming mercenaries, warlords, weapon dealers, and finally scavengers…

Those descriptions are just scratching the surface of what has been prepared lore-wise by the team of 20-ish developers from Fun Dog Studios. More elaborate information about the world, can be found in a great material prepared by YouTuber by the name of Riloe.

In a post-apocalyptic setting like this game offers, don’t forget that water is essential for your survival. Moreover, although you can play solo, having teammates in cooperative mode can be very helpful. Good luck on your scavenging journey!
