As a longtime fan of The Challenge, I must say this season is shaping up to be one for the books! With so many familiar faces and newcomers bringing their A-game, it’s clear that the competition is fiercer than ever.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I can confidently say that if you’re not part of the inner circle of the WikiFeet Coalition, this episode of The Challenge 40 might justifiably slip by unnoticed. The narrative is predominantly dominated by an endless loop of the same drawn-out disagreement between Michele and Bananas, or discussions centered around feet and the peculiar foot-focused pastimes of Johnny’s Angels.

Indeed, you’ve understood correctly. In the course of this significant 40th season, Bananas and his associates (Aviv, Jenny, and Rachel) have chosen to emphasize foot-related content as a key aspect of their business strategy. This encompasses everything from foot massages to friendly foot slaps, even poking fun at Cara Maria’s massive bunions. While it might seem unusual, given Cara’s reminder about not judging unconventional preferences, I’d say it’s more amusing than disturbing.

In the kitchen of the house elf, kind-hearted Derek attempts to teach Michelle how to cook, but unknowingly, she keeps his spatula as a sort of hostage while Bananas goads her yet again. He scolds her for getting angry at Josh for supporting Bananas during the evening’s elimination. Bananas has a knack for spotting weaknesses in alliances and amplifying them, something that Michelle, an expert in social strategy competitions, should be better equipped to detect. However, she continues to play right into his hands, driving Josh further into Banana’s camp. What’s more concerning is that Derek’s tortillas have now turned to charcoal.

Each day, the team aligns for the test known as the “40 Yard Dash.” A large number 40 is etched into the field ahead of them, forming a messy, muddy path filled with obstacles. The contestants must complete six rounds in this course, gathering six puzzle pieces hidden behind barriers such as mesh nets and bamboo stalks. Once they’ve finished, they must arrange these candy-like grape kebab-shaped pieces into a sturdy pyramid. Since Michelle lost the previous challenge, she will start with a one-minute disadvantage.

In the race, the mud is exceptionally deep, causing contestants to lose their shoes frequently. This situation could provide more foot-focused content, but the thick, sticky mud forms makeshift Prada loafers around participants’ socks instead. Meanwhile, Jenny and Rachel emphasize the significance of running the challenge together as a symbol of female camaraderie, yet neither of them emerges victorious. Instead, Cara Maria seizes her initial significant moment of the season, avoiding elimination this week as one of the targeted competitors.

Despite the penalty, by the time Michele collects all her puzzle pieces, it’s still anyone’s game. They’re so stumped, asking for checks on constructions that look like sad, drooping tee-pees. The boys take every opportunity to make tired jokes about balls and how no one has ever made their balls into pyramids before. Yeah, that’s because you have two balls. Maybe if you had seven, you would.

1) In this scenario, Jordan prevents Kyland from achieving a third consecutive victory, thus avoiding being marked as a target himself. The competition concludes with Michele and Aviv as the remaining players, as Cory places last among the men. Ultimately, it is Aviv who emerges victorious, prompting Michele to face elimination against her close friend Olivia. Since they are the only viable opponents, no additional Chamber round is necessary, and Jordan enjoys immunity without having to reveal any of his strategies. This puts him in a more fortunate position than Nara Smith’s husband.

In this episode, we encounter our second bus scene of the season, which typically signals an upcoming calamity or mishap. To paint a vivid picture, Bananas is lounging on the left side of the bus, engrossed in what appears to be a book of arrogant poetry or the like, with his feet sprawled across the aisle. Aviv, seated opposite him in the same row, also has her legs extended, creating a brief connection between their toes reminiscent of Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam.” Michele, sulking in the back row following her defeat, sarcastically quips, “Can I join the foot party?

She openly acknowledges in a private conversation that she’s provoking him intentionally, yet it’s unclear what outcome she hopes to achieve. Bananas reacts as if this action is beyond the line, even though such moves are common for him. One might wonder why he didn’t express similar outrage when Laurel made a more offensive comment about Darrell favoring Emily due to extramarital massages. Later, he launches a verbal attack on Michele, labeling her as a poor player, both physically and strategically. This attack seems to support Michele’s earlier argument that Bananas never truly valued their friendship. He also accuses Devin of using her for the game, but his actions suggest he’s no better, and it appears their feud is escalating beyond repair.

At the club gathering, Cory is trying to establish connections with women. He approaches Michele, often in a crucial position, but she expresses hesitation about whether she’ll support him or Derek. Instead, he starts courting Cara Maria, who has been largely independent throughout the game. She spends very little time on screen, typically around seventeen seconds per episode, despite this being a highly anticipated return season for her. Cara indicates to Cory that with Theo out of the picture, he’s now her top ally, similar to Kendall-Roy.

As the evening progresses, Michelle experiences what might be termed as a “Micheltantrum,” expressing remorse to Tori about making Olivia leave and the possible harm she may inflict on her male friends by having to select targets if she wins. Tori delivers an encouraging speech and advises her to tackle each issue individually, and I must admit, Michelle is becoming more likable this season!

In this game known as “Stranded,” there are two large DNA-like ladder structures situated in the game arena. Contestants must utilize 40 rods to construct the rungs, enabling them to ascend and grab a bag containing letters necessary for solving a three-word puzzle. Given that Michele is referred to as an expert at crosswords by the housemates, it’s clear she’s favored to win this round. However, I have confidence that I’ll outperform her in this mini game.

At the outset of the game, it becomes apparent that the rods come in various sizes, making it more complex than it appears to fit them into their respective ladders. Michelle chooses to pause initially and arrange the rungs according to size, whereas Olivia elects to skip organization and instead relies on guesswork. By the point where Michelle is prepared to try out the rungs, Olivia has already managed to place approximately four or five successfully. Olivia manages to sustain this advantage throughout the contest, and she reaches her letters first, boasting a substantial time cushion.

In the upcoming game phase, Olivia persists with her strategy-free approach, but it’s proving less successful this time around. Her game board is now filled with scattered letters, and she finds the task challenging due to her dyslexia, likening it to deciphering ancient hieroglyphics. However, when Michele collects her letters, she swiftly deciphers the phrase “Not Eliminated Tonight,” securing her third elimination victory of the season. If she continues at this pace, she’ll likely set a new record for eliminations in the season, or even surpass it!

Best friends always resolve their issues by giving each other a big hug. Meanwhile, Derek dabs his eyes with a fancy scarf, being quite dramatic. Michele chooses Bananas, Josh, and Cory as her targets, claiming she’s shielding Derek because of Olivia. I’m not fond of this strategy – Cory is more likely to be eliminated or win compared to Derek, and at the moment, Michele doesn’t have many other male allies except for Kyland, following her fallout with Josh. Moreover, Cory has a time penalty coming up, which raises his chances of competing again.

As the competition narrows down, I’m beginning to contemplate potential outcomes, and my instinct leans towards Jordan emerging victorious. Despite Bananas being defended by Laurel throughout the season on his podcast, even respected guests question her character, and it seems that few are awarding her “karma points.” Kyland is formidable too, but Jordan’s extensive experience and ability to strategize within the unique framework of The Challenge could prove decisive.

I hate that I’m counting out the women, who are absolute legends this season, but if there’s only one winner as has been implied, we can’t know that the structure of the final is going to be fair. Of course, there’s been times in the past when women have come in first (e.g. Jenny beating Bananas’s time on Total Madness or Cara Maria as the solo winner of Vendettas), but there’s also been infuriating instances, like Ninja Natalie’s first-female finish on War of the Worlds, where the final leg was a five-mile foot race and she left with zero prize money. I hope production proves me wrong and they create an entertaining final that doesn’t have gender-bias, but when has having faith in corporations ever served us well?
