As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast with a penchant for unearthing hidden gems, I find myself intrigued by the predicament of Babylon, a movie that seems to have left audiences divided. Much like the enigmatic protagonist of Fight Club, it appears to be a film ahead of its time, shrouded in mystery and misunderstood in its infancy.
In 2022, the film titled Babylon, helmed by Damien Chazelle, boasted an impressive ensemble of actors such as Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, and Tobey Maguire. Despite high anticipation, some awards, and nominations for statuettes, the movie fell short of expectations in terms of success. It proved to be a financial disappointment, with an estimated budget of around $80 million, it grossed only $64.9 million. The response from audiences was not overwhelmingly positive, rather it was mixed.
For a film with great anticipation, its performance hasn’t met expectations, leading many to label it as a flop. However, this is not a view shared by Margot Robbie, who finds it surprising that Babylon is being misinterpreted and underestimated. In The Talking Pictures podcast, the actress voiced her surprise at the film’s misunderstanding and undervaluation. She also hinted at a possibility for the movie to alter its current perception in the future.
As a gamer, I’m just as baffled. Despite my strong attachment to this project and my unwavering faith in it, I can’t seem to grasp why it wasn’t well-received. It makes me wonder if, looking back from the vantage point of 20 years, people will find it hard to believe that Babylon didn’t make a splash at its release. Just like hearing about how The Shawshank Redemption was initially a flop, and you can’t help but think, “How could that be? That’s absurd.
In another context, the actress likened Babylon to Shawshank Redemption, yet her description evokes memories of a different movie that initially faced criticism upon release and garnered mixed reviews. That film is Fight Club, which also struggled financially during its premiere. Today, this seems unbelievable given how it’s now hailed as a cult classic and widely appreciated by audiences.
Yet, could it be that Babylon is considered the modern-day equivalent of Fight Club in the future, leaving us puzzled as to why it didn’t succeed? Only time will reveal if Robbie’s steadfast belief in a series set in classic Hollywood was well-founded.
