After steering two Thor movies, Taika Waititi intends to guide a significantly distinct type of comic book film by assuming the director’s role in Judge Dredd.
Originating from the pages of the British comic book 2000 AD back in 1977, Judge Dredd enforces order in the grim future metropolis of Mega City One. In this world, he serves as both a peacekeeper and a judge, empowered to apprehend, try, sentence, and execute offenders within his jurisdiction.
The narrative he presents is a darkly humorous critique of authoritarianism and excessive police force, much of which got overlooked in the Sylvester Stallone film version released in 1995.
The 2012 film “Dredd,” featuring Karl Urban as the lead character, was significantly better and even made our list of top comic book movies. Unfortunately, it underperformed at the box office, effectively ending any plans for a sequel. However, it seems that the character is now being resurrected for another big-screen appearance.
Judge Dredd movie being penned by Iron Man 3 writer

Director Taika Waititi, known for his work on Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, has been linked to lead the fresh adaptation of Judge Dredd.
Drew Pearce, known for his work on Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and more recently, The Fall Guy, will pen the script.
Based on information from The Hollywood Reporter, Pearce and Waititi, who were both raised with these books and share a friendship, have long been seeking a suitable project to collaborate on.
Although the exact details about their plans remain unclear at this moment, they plan to draw inspiration primarily from the comic books, focusing more on world-building and incorporating dark humor.
According to THR, it’s intended to be an entertaining science fiction film that also resonates with our current cultural Zeitgeist.
As a die-hard fan, I’m eagerly anticipating that this upcoming movie could pave the way for an expansive Judge Dredd universe. With more films and series potentially unfolding across multiple platforms, there’s a good chance we’ll delve deeper into this fascinating world!
For quite some time, discussions have circulated about a potential Judge Dredd streaming series. However, this upcoming movie might silence those talks for now. As for the series, there’s no definite timeline yet. Taika Waititi, who is currently involved in various films and TV projects such as an unnamed Star Wars project, may delay its production.
