In the game Starfield’s Conflict of Conviction, you find yourself in a predicament where you engage a stranger to locate your lost son, but with an additional, chilling request: to eliminate him during their search.

House Veth’aal appears to be in a similar predicament as House Ka’ric. In the spirit of The Duel, this household is grappling with their obligations towards both faith and kinship. Viktor, the elder of the house and Vaeric’s father, is advocating for his son’s death as punishment for desertion, but the rest of the family feels that Viktor’s actions are excessive.

In the sanctuary known as Apostate’s Refuge, Vaeric is eluding us. To locate him, you must gather information about his whereabouts at Herald’s Rest first, then follow a trail set by a tracker to corner him.

At Herald’s Rest, engage any NPCs indicated by a light-blue marker. You can chat with them or persuade them to disclose details about Vaeric. Eventually, they will all direct you towards Tane, an enigmatic frequent visitor who is expected soon. Simply wait for a short while and he’ll take a seat at the counter.

Talk to Tane and either threaten him or offer him 1000 credits as a means of obtaining information about Vaeric’s location. Whether you opt for intimidation or bribery, Tane agrees to join you, thus serving as a replacement for your current companion.

To the Highlands

Make your way to the location indicated on the map, which is referred to as The Highlands. When you’re in the vicinity, Tane’s tracking system will indicate how far you are from your destination. Keep an eye on the top right corner of your screen to see if you’re moving closer or further away.

Alternatively, just head to the location I’ve shown you on the map above: the Abandoned camp.

You’ve come across Vaeric’s locator, yet it appears there’s nothing there. Let’s take a closer look and search for potential hints in the vicinity.

Look for a dead, glowing creature on the floor.
Look for a tracking device next a bed.
Look for Vaeric’s Camp Log entry on a table.
Look for Bloodstains on the floor, just by the tent.
Look for Footprints on the floor of the digging site.

Once you’ve dealt with each of the five puzzles, expect a swarm of Vortex Horrors to emerge. Be sure to eliminate them and then have a chat with Tane. For now, simply stick to the map indicators until you get to the farm.

All Apostate’s Refuge clues

“Talk to Irina, who is located northwest from the camp. Following a conversation where questions are exchanged, she guides you towards the Apostate’s Refuge, which lies to the north.

In this location, go up one flight of stairs and find the room to your left. Interact with the computer inside and review its records. Subsequently, ascend another set of stairs and search for a log sitting on a nearby table.

Step outdoors for a moment, engage with Tane, and voila! The enigmatic Vaeric shall emerge before your eyes. It’s time to make a crucial decision in the gripping tale of Conflict in Conviction.

Should you kill or spare Vaeric?

A better option would be to allow Vaeric to continue living, provided we receive 10,000 Credits, and request his sister’s Signet Ring from him.

Initially, he might object, but he’ll end up accepting the situation. Once you return to The Keep, inform Viktor Vaeric that he’s deceased and present the ring as evidence.

If you’re not so convinced, let’s explore the other alternatives:

Kill Vaeric: If you kill Vaeric, you can loot the Signet Ring from him and take it back to The Keep, where you’ll meet a pleased Viktor and a spiteful Vitoria.
- Let Tane Go: He’s not proud of what you’ve done, but he just goes back to his usual drunk self.
- Kill Tane: This is a way to punish Tane for being sneaky, but it doesn’t give you many rewards besides his loot.
Persuade Vaeric to return: You can convince Vaeric to return to his family when you find him in the Apostate’s Refuge. After a mean Persuasion check, he will return – saying he was too impulsive to make this choice. Back at The Keep, he’ll be greeted by an angry Viktor and a relieved Vitoria. This is a happy reunion, but your extra credits are gone.

Regardless of what you do, the main storyline carries on. Most importantly, you gain access to the Armory in Starfield.
