Spanish Content Is Europe’s Leading Revenue Generator on Streaming Platforms per ICEX, Parrot Analytics Report Unveiled at Mipcom (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie enthusiast who has been following international cinema for decades, I must say that the success of Spanish content worldwide is nothing short of astonishing! From the gripping storylines of “Money Heist” to the enchanting visuals of “Society of the Snow,” it’s clear that Spain is making its mark in the global film industry.

According to a recent report presented at Mipcom by the Spanish trade and investment organization ICEX and the entertainment analytics firm Parrot Analytics, J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow,” the Netflix sensation “Money Heist,” and Amazon Prime Video’s “Red Queen” have played a significant role in boosting the global popularity of Spanish content.

The data unveiled at the yearly gathering in Cannes showed that content originating from Spain has approximately earned 5.1 billion dollars through worldwide streaming services during the last four years.

By 2024, it’s projected that Spanish content will generate approximately $1.4 billion worldwide, highlighting a strong demand in major regions and reinforcing Spain’s leading position in the market for non-English content. This year, Spain is proudly showcased as the “Country of Honor” at Mipcom.

In Q1 2024, ‘The Society of Snow’ was the fourth most successful film at attracting new Netflix subscribers and ranked second in movies that boosted subscriber retention for the streaming giant, as per a recent report.

Popular international series like “Money Heist,” “Elite,” and “The Society of the Snow” are spearheading a surge in varied content, including Amazon’s “The Red Queen,” the AppleTV+ show “Land of Women,” and Netflix’s film “Nowhere.

In the year 2024, ‘Red Queen’ was one of the top five newly launched TV series on Prime Video that helped draw in new customers or persuade existing ones to renew their subscriptions within the initial thirteen weeks following its release.

As a fervent advocate for exceptional storytelling, I’m thrilled to share my excitement about “Land of Women,” a captivating Spain-U.S. co-production that I had the privilege to support and star in. In the whirlwind year of 2024, this series found its way into the top 15 new Apple TV+ productions, sparking a surge in subscribers within just the first 10 weeks. What a remarkable achievement for all involved!

Last year, among non-English films on Netflix, “Nowhere” stood out as a standout title, contributing significantly to the platform’s subscriber growth in its initial 13 weeks. This was alongside two other popular Spanish productions, namely “Birdbox Barcelona” and “Sister Death.

According to Erik Rovina Mardones, who is the director for creative industries at ICEX, the $5.1 billion in worldwide earnings generated by Spanish content over the last four years demonstrates just how much of an impact our productions have on global viewers and their increasing global appeal.

By partnering with Parrot Analytics, we can offer our industry and content creators data-backed perspectives that allow them to capitalize on burgeoning worldwide markets and amplify their content’s global influence,” he further explained.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that come January, I found myself part of an exciting collaboration between ICEX and Parrot Analytics. Under this agreement, I can now access Parrot Analytics’ services at reduced rates. This fantastic opportunity empowers Spanish content creators like me to boost our chances of landing co-productions, sales, and distribution deals. It’s a significant stride forward for the Spanish film industry!

Jaime Otero, VP of partnerships at Parrot Analytics, expressed delight about collaborating with ICEX to measure the enhanced economic influence of Spanish film and television content. He further noted that the escalating global interest in Spain’s content is crucial because it contributes directly to increased earnings for leading streaming services. This observation not only emphasizes the cultural significance of Spanish productions but also brings attention to the substantial financial benefits they are generating worldwide.

Based on Parrot Analytics’ data comparing 2024 to 2023, there has been exceptional growth in the worldwide interest for Spanish content. This surge is particularly notable in Asia and Oceania.

UCAN (U.S. & Canada): +40%

LATAM (Latin America): +56%

Europe: +73%

Africa: +67%

Asia: +100%

Oceania: +175%

The surge in demand has led to an expansion of Spanish series and movies on popular streaming services. According to Parrot Analytics, there’s been a 22% rise in their availability since 2021, indicating that streaming platforms are increasingly investing in content from Spain.

Spain is the number one market in Europe and among Spanish-speaking countries when it comes to generating revenue from non-English content globally. It holds this position behind Japan, South Korea, and India, which are the top three markets in this category. France comes in fifth place.

Mipcom runs Oct. 21-24 in Cannes.
