As a lifelong enthusiast of all things comedy, I find myself positively giddy at the prospect of “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night.” Having spent countless hours immersed in the witty banter and absurd humor that has defined SNL for five decades, I can confidently say that this docuseries promises to be a treasure trove for any devoted fan.
Prior to the “Saturday Night Live” 50th anniversary special, streaming platform Peacock will debut a four-part documentary series focusing on the iconic sketch-comedy program, entitled “SNL50: A Journey Beyond Saturday Night.
On January 16th, you can catch the docuseries as it unfolds, boasting over 60 contributors and “SNL” veterans delving into diverse aspects of the legendary show. The inaugural episode, titled “Five Minutes,” will zero in on the “SNL” audition procedure, showcasing unseen footage and interviews with some of the show’s top performers. In the second episode, “Written By: A Week Inside the SNL Writers Room,” we get a sneak peek at the uniquely tumultuous process that takes sketches from script to screen.
In the third instalment titled “More Cowbell,” the series delves deeply into a specific sketch from 2000, which has proven timeless, where Blue Öyster Cult’s producer, Bruce Dickinson (portrayed by Christopher Walken), persistently urges Gene Frenkle (Will Ferrell) to play more cowbell during the recording of “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper.” The final episode, “Season 11: The Weird Year,” takes us on a journey through an influential year in the show’s chronicle that marked a turning point and paved the way for its continued existence.
The special event titled ‘SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night’ offers unparalleled behind-the-scenes insights into the iconic TV show and its star-studded team. The directors for these episodes are Robert Alexander, Marshall Curry, Neil Berkeley, and Jason Zeldes. Morgan Neville, Caitrin Rogers, Juaquin Cambron (as showrunner), and other executives contribute to its production. Jonathan Formica and Allison Klein serve as the producers.
Neville shared that he’s had an enduring affection for ‘Saturday Night Live’ since his earliest memories. For the 50th anniversary of SNL, he’s been privileged to team up with several independent filmmakers he admires, to explore some profound aspects of SNL. Collectively, these self-contained episodes offer a fresh angle on SNL and its underlying dynamics.
On February 16th (Sunday), “SNL” will mark its 50th anniversary by airing a three-hour live prime-time special from Studio 8H. This event can be watched on both NBC and the streaming platform, Peacock.
