Smile 2 ending explained: Does Skye does stop the curse?

As a horror enthusiast with over two decades of chills and thrills under my belt, I must say that Smile 2 has delivered a gory, gripping tale that truly lives up to its name. The way each character’s descent into madness is portrayed, along with the graphic depictions of their gruesome deaths, is nothing short of masterful.

Among the major mysteries looming over Smile 2 is the true nature of the malevolent spirit causing the curse. While Parker Finn’s horror film sequel doesn’t provide an explanation for this, the chilling conclusion certainly leaves room for a possible third installment.

In theaters across the UK right now is Smile 2, an upgraded version of its original, boasting even more excitement. The film stars Naomi Scott as Skye Riley, a pop sensation grappling with the aftermath of a recent heartbreaking event while also battling to maintain her sobriety as she readies for her return to the stage.

In a chilling manner, the consequences of the Smile curse becoming hers mirror the events of “It Follows.” As stress accumulates, Skye’s life descends into chaos, as an unsettling presence intensifies the situation and thrusts her into a harrowing reality that feels like a real-life nightmare.

As a lifelong horror movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that this film’s climax is nothing short of astounding. With my years of exposure to various horror genres under my belt, I have seen many shocking endings, but this one certainly takes the cake. The grisly deaths portrayed in the movie are truly chilling and make for a memorable viewing experience.

Does Skye stop the curse in Smile 2?

In the finale of Smile 2, Skye fails to halt the curse and instead, she’s overwhelmed by the entity during their performance on stage. This malevolent force then penetrates her physical form.

Once completely overcome, a serene expression takes over her visage prior to her taking a drastic and violent life-ending action (such as thrusting a microphone into her own skull).

Indeed, this implies that the audience, alongside thousands of spectators, Skye’s mother Elizabeth (played by Rosemarie DeWitt), and her friend Joshua (Miles Gutierrez-Riley), have all fallen under the curse’s influence. This is certainly unsettling news for them, but exciting news for us since it lays a solid foundation for an intriguing storyline if there ever is a Smile 3.

The Smile 2 ending doesn’t explain the curse

In the trailer for Smile 2, there’s a hint that we could discover a way to vanquish the demon without taking a life, yet it only seems to have raised more mysteries and unanswered questions for me as a fan.

It certainly seems like a possibility earlier on in the new movie thanks to Morris (Peter Jacobson). After Lewis (Lukas Gage) passes on the curse to Skye, she starts receiving messages from an unknown number. At first they seem threatening, but then they later indicate they can help her.

Ultimately, she consents to have a meeting with Morris, a dedicated ER nurse, who seems to have found a method to halt the entity following his brother’s encounter with the curse.

Unfortunately, it seems like a challenging task ahead. Morris suggests that the only possible solution to lift the curse might involve something drastic – taking away Skye’s life in a manner beyond the entity’s influence.

Due to his background in medicine, Morris asserts that he could momentarily halt her heartbeat, causing her death and thus severing the chain of events, followed by reviving her again.

Initially, when Skye learns this information, she believes Morris is insane and angrily leaves. Over time, as the malevolent grinning demon becomes more oppressive, Skye loses control, leading to a gruesome incident in which she unintentionally kills her own mother (Editor’s Note: This will become clear later).

Currently, she is confined in a health and wellness center. To break free, she took hostages with a firearm, commandeered a vehicle, and sped off towards Morris.

She doesn’t want to hurt anyone else in her life, and decides to hit the f**k it button. Skye arrives at the destination, where Morris leads her into a makeshift operating room, which happens to be in an abandoned Pizza Hut’s walk-in fridge.

There’s method in Morris’s madness though as if Skye’s body temperature is lower, he can stop her heart for longer without damaging her brain, giving them more time to ensure the cycle is broken.

However, while he’s getting her ready for the operation, he abruptly abandons her on the surgical table. At this moment, the demon assumes the appearance of Skye, who was Skye herself following the tragic car accident that claimed the life of her boyfriend, Paul Hudson (Ray Nicholson).

Without Morris around, Skye thrusts the needle into her own neck, thinking that it would halt her heartbeat to prevent further harm.

However, in a surprising turn of events, the demon chuckles and declares, “This is all a illusion.” Glancing at her hand, Skye finds it vacant.

Afterward, he nudges her onto the stage, and there she appears before a throng of cheering admirers, even her mother among them (Ed’s note: As I predicted, it all makes sense). Indeed, Elizabeth is alive! This raises an intriguing point: how much of this was genuine?

Was it genuinely Morris who was present at the beginning, or was it merely a malicious illusion created by the demon to provide Skye with false encouragement and intensify her suffering instead?

In the context of Smile 2, the idea that the host should be eliminated before the entity becomes definite appears reasonable, but it leaves many questions unanswered and allows for various interpretations at the story’s conclusion.

So, what exactly do we learn about the Smile curse?

Indeed, most of what we learned from the first Smile film revolves around a parasite that thrives on human suffering or, in simpler terms, a creature that subsists on misery.

The process involves one individual replacing another after gaining control of their body, leading them to commit suicide. Those who observe this act of self-harm then become the new hosts, and the cycle persists.

In the initial instance portrayed by the Smile, we reach a point where the demon deceives Rose, giving her a misleading feeling of resolution. She thinks she’s escaped its grasp, but ultimately, it overpowers her. In the concluding sequence, overwhelmed and powerless against the demon, Rose tragically takes her own life, leaving the burden for Joel (Kyle Gallner).

Before this, it was discovered that there was a method to disrupt the chain of suicides, which was made known through Robert Talley, who was an exception to the chain.

He’s locked up in prison for murder, having discovered that the only way to pass it on is for the infected to murder someone in front of another person.

In addition, Robert discloses that there was a different chain documented in Brazil earlier on. In Smile 2, it’s revealed that Morris talked about the chain preceding Skye, stating his brother was eight suicides before her. However, one can wonder if Morris truly existed at all.

Is there a post-credits scene?

We’ll keep this one short and sweet: there is no post-credits scene in Smile 2

Once the film ends and the closing credits appear, feel free to depart from the cinema should you choose to do so. Alternatively, you’re welcome to remain seated and enjoy one of Scott’s compositions that plays after the movie, accompanied by a spine-tingling scream.

Smile 2 deaths explained

In Smile 2, there are many violent deaths depicted, each one gruesome in nature. Among those who perish are Joel, Lewis, Morris’ brother, Paul, and Skye. Additionally, we witness a brutal murder that appears to be Elizabeth, though considering the ending, it might have been a hallucination.

The film begins by introducing us to Joel, a character who meets an extremely violent end in one of the most disturbing scenes. The story continues shortly after the conclusion of the initial movie, where it’s evident that Joel is struggling under the pressure of his possession experience (from Smile 1).

Instead of trying to transfer the curse by cold-bloodedly killing a corrupt drug dealer in full view of his unsavory superior, Joel unfortunately ends up inadvertently taking out both individuals, due to an unfortunate turn of events.

Additionally, it turns out that Lewis had been there the entire time, observing everything, which means Joel unknowingly transferred the curse onto an unsuspecting individual. However, before he could clarify the situation, a gang of the drug dealer’s associates burst in and began firing at him.

Rushing out of the house in panic, I dash into the street without looking, right into the path of an onrushing vehicle. A massive truck slams into me, reducing my body to fragments that scatter and leave a gruesome streak of internal organs behind.

Next, it’s poor Lewis who becomes Skye’s visitor, seeking Vicodin. Despite being in recovery from drug dependency, she requires a potent painkiller due to a car accident she had a few months back, which has caused her significant back pain.

While there, she observes Lewis seems distressed. Unbeknownst to her, this turmoil is due to the curse. Before reappearing, Lewis retreats to another room, then returns with an eerie smile on his face.

Lewis seizes a nearby dumbbell, using it to repeatedly slam against his own face. With each impact, his facial features become increasingly disfigured, until ultimately chunks of skin start flaking from his jaw. After he perishes, the curse gets transferred to Skye.

As I stepped into Morris’s virtual world for the first time, he recounted the grisly tale of how his brother met his end – tearing his own jaw off with a crowbar. The screen flickered, displaying that harrowing instant in chilling detail, but it could all just be a hallucination, I thought to myself, wondering if this game was more about survival than I initially suspected.

As Skye’s mental condition worsens, we uncover additional details about the crash that took Paul, her former boyfriend, away from her.

Among the most emotionally devastating sequences is when we flash back to immediately following the accident, revealing Skye lying there with a broken leg bone protruding and blood smeared across her face. Upon glancing nearby, she discovers that Paul has perished, prompting an agonized scream from her.

Regarding Elizabeth, her demise is vividly grim. Following Skye’s fainting spell, she regains consciousness in a wellness facility where she attempts to persuade her mother to release her. However, her mom persists, stating that she should stay for another day to rest before the tour commences.

As a fervent admirer, I found myself embroiled in an intense disagreement. Just then, a chilling grin spread across Elizabeth’s countenance that could only be described as demonic. With a fragment of shattered mirror, she began to repeatedly puncture her own face.

As Skye attempts to flee, she suddenly awakens and comprehends that she had been clutching the shard all along. Yet, it’s important to note that Elizabeth is present in the crowd during the climactic scene, suggesting that this scenario could well be a deception conceived by the curse.

In a chilling turn of events, Skye meets her demise following possession. Instead of showing it directly, she uses a microphone to self-inflict harm. Finn strategically chooses to keep this gruesome act off-screen, instead capturing the shocked and horrified reactions of the onlookers on camera.

We do see the aftermath, though: the microphone has been shoved right through her brain.

Will there be a Smile 3?

Even though Paramount has yet to approve a Smile 3, there are hints that the story may carry on as suggested by Finn.

Not just the finale of Smile 2, but it also lays the groundwork for a potential third installment and an outbreak-like Smile curse, considering that countless attendees of the concert are now contaminated due to the events unfolding.

According to the filmmaker, there are numerous intriguing paths the universe of Smile could explore, various routes it might travel. (GamesRadar asked about potential Smile movies.)

Currently, I’m eagerly anticipating audience reactions to Smile 2. If fortune favors us and the audience can identify with and warm up to the movie, I believe there’s no telling how far it could go!

The movie “Smile” will be released in two American cinemas on October 18th. Keep an eye out for where it’ll first stream, and don’t forget to read up on some Creepypasta beforehand.
