In an emotionally poignant twist reminiscent of the ancient Greek tale Orpheus and Eurydice, the conclusion of Severance Season 2 sees the storyline turn upside down, mirroring the journey taken by Mark and Gemma. (A heads-up: Spoilers are coming up…)
In the tenth episode of Season 2, three years following Mark’s exclamation, “She’s alive!”, his character, Outie, experiences a heartwarming and poignant reunion with Gemma. This moment is among the most powerful and emotionally charged scenes in Severance – but the series finale later unveils its shockingly tragic twists.
In the final sequence, Mark’s inner self assists Gemma in making an escape… yet he decides against joining her, opting instead to remain with Helly within Lumon. As Gemma persistently knocks on the door and implores him to step outside, Mark and Helly dash through the hallways; a mix of joy and fear etched across their faces as they confront an ominous, unpredictable future.
The conclusion is heart-wrenching, subtly redefining the relationship between Mark and Gemma when compared to Orpheus and Eurydice.
The Orpheus and Eurydice story explained
According to ancient Greek tales, the renowned musician, poet, and seer named Orpheus develops a deep affection for Eurydice. After tying the knot, despite a premonition of impending difficulties given during their union, their initial days were harmonious.
Upon the dance with the Nymphs, my heart’s delight, Eurydice, took a fatal step on a viper’s bite. In an instant, she was gone, leaving me heartbroken and inconsolable. My sorrow was so profound it moved the gods to tears. Driven by despair, I embarked on a journey to the very depths of the underworld, seeking to reunite with my beloved Eurydice.
Overwhelmed by his profound sorrow, he managed to persuade Hades and Persephone to grant Eurydice a second chance on Earth. However, there was a stipulation: he must lead the way, always moving ahead without glancing back until they had safely ascended to the upper world.
As he made his way back up to the world of the living, he grew uneasy, wondering if he could still hear Eurydice’s steps following him. Fear crept in as he pondered whether the gods might have deceived him once more.
Standing at the entrance to the underworld, his belief faltered, causing him to turn around. Lo and behold, there she was. Unfortunately, by looking back, he sealed her fate, condemning her to eternity within the underworld.
How it connects to Mark and Gemma’s Severance twist
In the series “Severance,” Lumon might not represent literal Hell, but it’s strikingly similar to the underworld. It appears as an endless maze, trapping the souls, or in this case, the minds, of those who work there – that is, half of them.
Mark’s outer self thought Gemma had perished in a car accident, similar to how Orpheus assumed Eurydice was deceased. However, in Season 2, it was his inner self’s courage that led to the revelation that she was still alive, imprisoned deep within Lumon – much like Eurydice could be rescued from the underworld.
In a strange twist of fate, my life mirrors that of Persephone, the mythical goddess. Like her, I’m torn between two realms – the one I know as myself, and another shaped by Lumon and their project, Cold Harbor (or Mark’s MDR endeavors). It’s like I’ve got this dual existence, trapped between the underworld and the world above, only in my case, it’s not mythology, but a surreal reality that I grapple with every day.
Much like Orpheus and Eurydice’s tale concludes in sorrow, Mark and Gemma haven’t had a joyful resolution (not for now). Similar to how Orpheus was tormented by fear that Eurydice might not be real, Mark trusted the wrong person – himself – and as a result, he lost Gemma, leaving her heartbroken when their connection slipped away.
In Greek mythology, it’s Eurydice who is unable to escape the realm of the underworld. On the other hand, in Severance, Mark’s Innie doesn’t get trapped; instead, he defies the norms of reality, opting for love in a seemingly hopeless setting rather than enduring eternal darkness.
