I must admit, it sounds like you’ve had quite the rollercoaster ride, navigating through friendships and personal growth on the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. It’s impressive how you’ve managed to maintain strong bonds with Heather, Meredith, and Mary, despite the challenges.
Lisa Barlow has been up since 3 a.m. — but you’d never know.
Sitting in a room at London’s Langham Hotel, “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star is glammed up and rocking an all-black look, complete with knee-high leather boots. The reason for her early morning, she tells EbMaster, was the fallout from the intense sixth episode of her show’s fifth season.
She says, with her distinctive gravelly voice, “I dozed off, only to have my phone continuously ringing. I didn’t want to silence it as I rely on the alarm, so I woke up. I ended up watching the entire episode, which left me astonished.
Under the fitting title “Mafia Wives and Tense Vibrations,” the simmering conflict between Barlow and Whitney Rose escalated to its peak when Barlow reacted drastically by summoning her private security following allegations that Rose’s latest jewelry venture was peddling goods sourced from Alibaba.
“Hey Shawn, I need an investigation opened,” Barlow said in a line that immediately entered the “Housewives” hall of fame. “I’m being accused of something I did not do. I’m going to send you information, and I want to go the distance on it. The distance.”
The husbands of Barlow and Rose stepped in, and the show concluded with its iconic “To Be Continued” sign, contradicting some fans’ expectations that Season 5 might underperform compared to the Monica Garcia/Reality von Tease storyline from last season. However, this episode demonstrated that “RHOSLC” is capable of delivering drama, and it appears that Barlow is at the center of it all.
During their encounter at Hayu FanFest in London, Barlow engaged in a conversation with EbMaster, discussing the bizarre incident they both witnessed, as well as her friendships with Angie Katsanevas and Bronwyn Newport. Additionally, they touched upon whether Barlow has assumed the role of the cast’s antagonist.
Season 5 is airing right now after last season’s wild ride. What’s it like with the new cast members? And how is it to have Mary Cosby back?
It’s fascinating that our show seems to be one of the few remaining with the entire original cast intact. The uniqueness lies in this aspect alone. I enjoy when fresh talent joins, as it challenges everyone and pushes them beyond their comfort zones. For me, it adds an exciting twist. What makes our ensemble special is that our relationships evolve genuinely and authentically, so last year’s dynamic will be quite different this time around. I believe you’ll notice each character growing more into themselves.
You introduced Bronwyn to the group. How did that come to be?
Initially, I believed she would be an excellent addition a few seasons back. In fact, I invited her to one of our gatherings, where she graced us with her presence and dazzled everyone with her style. I find her bold in her opinions, distinctive, and hailing from outside Utah, which adds an intriguing twist to her personality and keeps things fresh, deviating from the typical cultural norm. I believe she’s a fantastic fit for our show. Watching the series unfold has been captivating because there were no conflicts between us; instead, I supported her as much as possible. It was intriguing to witness her antagonism towards me and observe how her relationships developed, particularly who she seemed to be most at ease with. As the saying goes, “A friend to all is a friend to none.
Have you been watching each episode live?
I watched the episode from this Wednesday in London at 3 a.m. I fell asleep, and then my phone kept ringing because so many people don’t know I’m in London, and I didn’t want to turn my volume off because I need my alarm to go off. And so I got up. I’ve been up since 3:45, and I watched the full episode and I was shocked. Because it’s like, oh my gosh, it’s one thing to know what you participated in, it’s a whole other thing to see dialogue that’s happening when you’re not there, or when you’re there and it’s right behind your back but in front of your face. So I was like, this is crazy.
What surprised you the most?
It seems to me that last night I was quite taken aback by the accusations directed at me, as I’ve always demonstrated a trustworthy character and have been open and honest with people. In fact, I speak directly to individuals about such matters. Therefore, it struck me as unusual. During our time in Milwaukee, I informed Whitney that it was I who brought up the rumors of her business drop-shipping with Meredith Marks. I repeatedly explained to Whitney that our conversation was minimal and primarily aimed at defending her. It appears to me that Whitney felt embarrassed when the news about her brand being essentially Alibaba resold came out, instead of considering changing her approach. Rather than acknowledging this, she tried to shift blame onto me, first targeting Meredith, then turning on me.
Frankly, I find this repetitive. It seems people keep doubting Lisa Barlow’s actions, saying things like “There’s no way Lisa Barlow would do that.” However, I’ve got my hands full, I don’t wish to bother others and I’m unsure of your sources for the goods you sell. The person in question has stated clearly, “I never said it was Lisa Barlow, there’s no proof it was Lisa Barlow, she wants it to be Lisa Barlow.” So, I wonder, what’s the point of this?
This all goes back to Whitney calling you a villain on Nick Viall’s podcast before the start of the season.
The villain’s actions were incredibly foolish. What particularly angered me during that podcast was her insinuation that I never apologize, and I must always be correct. At that specific moment, she claimed that I didn’t reach out to her when her friend passed away, wasn’t there for her, and didn’t send flowers. All of this was false, yet she continued to bring it up. Instead of admitting her mistake and apologizing, she said I always have to be right. It’s infuriating – she refuses to admit when she’s wrong, yet she wants me to support her fabrications. It’s bizarre – it’s as if she’s caught in a twisted thought process.
Does part of you want to just go along with the “villain” label?
I’m expressing myself clearly and directly. They’re receiving a straightforward message from me, which is why I asked [Whitney]: “Show your evidence. What proof do you have? Name the specific individuals.” I’ve been like Sutton Stracke from “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” saying repeatedly, “Name them, name them, name them.” However, when the person in question denied it, they insisted on continuing to claim that it was me. They keep saying, “I truly believe it’s Lisa.” But why would I do something like that?
And you and Angie aren’t getting along — what do you think the root of that issue is?
It seems that our relationship was one-sided, as I’ve always been there for her, offering my support and defense in various aspects of her life. However, it feels like she’s always on the lookout for issues, even when there might not be any. The issue with Angie is that she can dish out harsh words easily, but if you stand up for yourself or defend against her criticisms, she quickly forgets our past kindness and accuses you of wronging her. Yet, I have never intentionally hurt Angie in any way.
Last year in Bermuda, I confronted Meredith on behalf of Angie, and my actions were quite intense. However, we had both apologized to one another following our altercation. Prior to that incident, Meredith and I had mutual wrongs against each other, but we were moving forward positively. Unfortunately, I set us back significantly by defending Angie with an incomplete version of the truth.
How did you and Meredith get on good terms again, and why was that important to you?
Following our get-together last year, I reached out to Meredith. I spent approximately two hours in my car before calling her, expressing that we needed to address the issue at hand because I was hurt. I shared with her, “There are things we need to discuss,” and I reminded her of how diligent I had been in supporting her, even going so far as risking physical harm for her sake when I stood up to a van full of people with Jen [Shah]. We then had an open conversation about all the issues. Meredith expressed her feelings, shared what had hurt her, and outlined what she required from me. I responded, “Understood, you have my commitment,” and we’ve both kept our promises since then. Meredith has proven to be a wonderful friend to me, and I am making every effort to reciprocate as the best friend I can be to her.
Who are you closest with and least close to as of right now? What can you tease about the rest of the season?
I find myself in a somewhat favorable situation. I believe I deserve apologies for the injustices I’ve experienced; I feel wronged. I’m tired of being mistreated, which is why I’ve become indifferent. I get along well with Heather, Meredith, and Mary. My relationship with Mary is particularly straightforward. I think Mary still holds me accountable for some Season 1 comments, but I sense she’s moving past that. As for Britani and Bronwyn, I have a reasonable relationship with both of them. My likeability doesn’t matter to me; I believe I’ve demonstrated my worth. I’ve been isolated multiple times during each season, if you will say.
You’re here with some other cast members — Jessel Taank, Ashley Darby, Sutton — and you’ve posted some crossover pics on your Instagram lately. Who are your favorite girls from other casts, and what has it been like bonding with them?
Sutton and I seem to have a remarkable connection; it’s almost as if we can complete each other’s thoughts. Recently, we both opted for grapefruit juice at the same time, which left me wondering if we share a fondness for this beverage. It’s quite extraordinary!
As a follower, I adore both Kathy Hilton and Kyle Richards. They truly embody the essence of Beverly Hills – iconic, stunning individuals, and I hold their family in high regard. The new additions to “New York,” such as Jenna [Lyons] and Erin [Lichy], are fantastic. I’m smitten with Rebecca Minkoff too. Though she may be receiving criticism for her religious beliefs, being Jewish and following Scientology, I see no difference from my own experiences. After all, I’m Jewish by heritage, yet I practice Mormonism. It seems to me that people are overreacting when it comes to her faith.
You’re the Sundance Queen, and Sundance could leave Park City in 2027 – do you think Salt Lake City should host it?
It seems logical that growth from Park City should occur in Salt Lake, given its context. I’ve attended the Sundance Film Festival since my college days, initially as a festival-goer known for partying until 5 a.m., then picking up where I left off the next night. Back then, Sundance was synonymous with groundbreaking films, new connections, and burgeoning businesses.
In 2007, when we introduced our tequila brand Vida Tequila, we hosted an extraordinary event, a lounge that left quite an impact. I’m unable to disclose all the performers involved, as some may have found themselves in legal trouble – you can guess who graced our stage. It was legendary and spectacular. After a period of scaling back, we were almost returning to those heydays just before the COVID-19 pandemic. Frankly, I believe that the individual responsible for selecting movies for last year’s Sundance Film Festival shouldn’t hold that position again. I had plans to participate in Bon Jovi’s documentary party, but they informed me that it was canceled because Sundance refused it. That’s just absurd!
