Real-life Erik Menendez blasts Netflix for “horrible and blatant lies” in Monsters series

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in true crime narratives, I find myself both intrigued and dismayed by the latest development in the Menendez brothers’ story. Erik Menendez‘s statement from prison serves as a stark reminder that while we are entertained by these stories, they are rooted in real-life tragedies that continue to impact those involved.

Following the airing of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” the actual Erik Menendez, speaking from behind bars, has criticized Netflix and Ryan Murphy for what he considers an inaccurate representation of the events.

This crime series, with The Lyle and Erik Menendez Tale serving as its second installment, delves into the chilling true story of the Menendez brothers, who brutally killed their own parents on August 20, 1989.

As a dedicated gamer diving into this intriguing Netflix series, I found myself unraveling the most contentious aspects from the infamous case. This includes the chilling allegations of sexual abuse against their father, José Menendez, and the shocking revelation that conversations with the brothers’ psychologist, Jerome Oziel, were used as evidence in the trial.

In typical fashion for Murphy’s crime dramas, the narrative is presented in an extravagant and flamboyant manner, which has sparked controversy over its incestuous storyline. Now, the real-life Erik Menendez has spoken up, claiming that Murphy harbors “malicious intentions.

Erik Menendez’s statement

Erik’s statement was released via his current wife Tammi’s X account on September 20, 2024.

In his writing, he expressed that we had progressed past the fabricated narratives and damaging depictions of Lyle, forming a distorted image of Lyle based on the numerous falsehoods prevalent in the series. He could only assume these portrayals were intentional.

With a sense of sadness, I find myself compelled to express my conviction: It’s hard for me to believe that Ryan Murphy could be so unaware and inaccurate about our experiences without it being deliberate.

Afterward, he conceded Netflix’s involvement in the issue, stating: “It’s disheartening for me to realize that Netflix’s biased representation of our crime has moved us away from the raw truth – it’s as if we’ve traveled back in time, to a point when court cases were constructed on an outdated belief system that men couldn’t be sexually abused and didn’t respond to rape trauma in the same way women do.

For more than two decades, numerous courageous individuals have challenged and uncovered those harmful falsehoods, setting aside their personal embarrassment to speak up boldly.

Now, Murphy constructs a repugnant storyline by depicting Lyle and myself in a despicable manner, as well as spreading demoralizing falsehoods about us.

He went on saying: “Isn’t honesty sufficient? Let honesty hold its ground as truth. It’s disheartening to realize that a single powerful individual can potentially reverse years of advancement in revealing childhood traumas. Violence should never be employed, it’s never the remedy, and it always ends tragically.

I want to emphasize that inflicting violence on a child leaves a trail of one hundred unspoken atrocities hidden beneath the shine and sparkle, often concealed until sadness permeates us all. To those who have extended their kindness and aid, I am deeply grateful.

As a dedicated follower of the Menendez brothers’ case, I’m sharing an update: Erik and Lyle Menendez are currently serving their life sentences together at the RJ Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. Their conviction was handed down in December 1992.
