As a seasoned observer of human nature and all its complexities, I must say that the dynamics among these Salt Lake City housewives are as intriguing as they are exhausting. Each woman seems to be grappling with her own set of issues, using apologies as a tool to assert their perceived power or to validate their self-worth.
I found myself yearning for the eccentric ladies of Salt Lake City. Ever since Mary Cosby commented on someone’s hospital-like odor or Jen Shah made her appearance, this franchise has quickly become one of my favorites and a perfect introduction for those curious about the Housewives. Filled with affluence and drama that are the hallmarks of such series, what sets these women apart is their unique quirkiness. We’ve seen a criminal now behind bars, a woman who wed her step-grandfather to lead an enigmatic church, and a Mormon running a tequila company – all amidst the backdrop of Salt Lake City, which offers a contrasting blend of strip malls and stunning mountain vistas.
Following the disclosure that the latest addition to the cast in the previous season, Monica Garcia, was one of the individuals operating an Instagram account for years that disseminated rumors and gossip about their circle of friends, it’s challenging to envision how the women on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City can progress and mend (in a manner similar to recovering) from last season.
Originally associated with Jen Shah, who’s now imprisoned, Monica played a pivotal role in one of the most shocking plot twists seen on ‘Housewives’ and possibly reality TV altogether. During a tense dinner on a Bermuda beach, Heather Gay presented Monica with receipts, proof, and timelines as evidence. Unfortunately for Monica, she is no longer part of the cast due to this betrayal. Although such an act could have fostered camaraderie among these women, the previous season’s reunion failed to bring much reconciliation or resolution.
In this season, how does it shape up for our women? The opening episode shows them powerfully expressing their experiences through voiceover, as they face the world’s challenges head-on by revealing aspects of their lives. Despite the hardships, they find strength in each other, as Angie K. puts it, “It’s a connection and a friendship we can’t fully articulate.” Indeed, I think Angie K. finds it difficult to express these feelings; I truly believe so.
In a more relaxed tone, it’s apparent that the upcoming season promises intense developments. An intriguing way to uncover these evolving relationships is through a Valentine’s party thrown by Lisa Barlow, who playfully dubbed it “besos” as a reminder to express her affection towards her friends.
Just moments after that statement, my mind whisked back to a few weeks prior, when Angie, Lisa, and Heather were discussing Whitney’s podcast appearance where she claimed Lisa only cares about being right and has always been the villain. As a movie buff who’s seen many a drama unfold, I can’t help but feel bewildered whenever these ladies seem to believe every word spoken on podcasts or interviews. To be honest, they’ve hurled harsher words at each other during confessionals and social media exchanges. Yet, we all know Lisa – she never lets such remarks pass unchallenged.
In the current scenario, it’s Mary and her latest confidante, Angie K, who exit a vehicle together and walk into the gathering. You may remember that Mary found Angie K rather distasteful during their trip to Palm Springs not so long ago. What sets Mary apart as an interesting character is not her logical or consistent emotional responses; instead, it’s the fact that there seems to be no underlying reason for her actions or complaints. When prompted to explain what had altered during a private interview, Mary replies, “She earned my trust.” It seems this encounter transpired at the reunion, when Angie K subtly alerted Mary she had lipstick on her teeth.
It appears that the bond between Mary and Angie K. has brought a revitalized, energetic side of Mary to light. Previously, her presence was erratic, leading others to treat her gently, as if she were an elderly pet. But now, from the initial moments onward, Mary seems more engaged. In fact, she later acknowledges Heather’s weight loss, a subtle way for Mary to express warmth and welcome, much like saying “hello, dear.
Heather shows up accompanied by Britani, who’s in a tumultuous relationship with Jared Osmond, rumored to be quite significant within the Mormon community, almost like royalty. It’s fascinating to learn about Mormon culture through this series. At first, we encounter Bronwyn, a stylish acquaintance of Lisa’s, who exudes wealth and adores fashion. Her brand is called “funny chaos,” which she likely uses as a catchphrase. Straight away, she connects with Mary over their shared love of luxury and haute couture.
As a film critic, I found myself cringing during the scene where Britani inadvertently fumbled her introduction by praising Bronwyn’s outfit. It seemed that her compliment was misguided, as it unintentionally suggested that she was less affluent than Bronwyn. This initial blunder quickly turned off Mary, who, it appears, harbors a peculiar dislike towards individuals of modest means.
As a devoted fan, I must say that so far, Meredith has been rather reserved. Yet, a glimpse into the past transports us to when Meredith was recuperating from a breast reduction surgery in her bed, with Heather by her side for support. Although physically recovering, Meredith’s emotional wounds were still raw from the events that unfolded in Bermuda. What particularly irks Meredith at this moment is the sense that Whitney is mimicking her business ideas – from jewelry to now bath products. In Meredith’s eyes, it feels like a direct assault on her, and she expresses this concern to Heather who, amusingly, finds the whole situation quite humorous.
At the party later on, we overhear an interesting tidbit from Lisa about Jack’s assignment in Colombia. By this stage, he has been eight months into his mission. Lisa shares with a fellow partygoer that Jack is doing “exceptionally well.” She continues, expressing her belief that this experience is educating him greatly. She mentions how they have some unique bookstores and barber shops there, which might suggest that the environment is providing Jack with unconventional learning opportunities. However, her statement could be a bit vague as anyone in such a place could also find unique bookstores and barber shops, not necessarily implying Jack’s location.
Prior to the dinner part of the event, there were two tense exchanges. Meredith challenges Whitney over the bath bombs, a topic she’s sensitive about due to its perceived threat to her business. Despite weeks passing since their conversation with Heather, Meredith perceives Whitney’s venture as a direct attack on her earnings. Their interaction resembles a lengthy game of broken telephone, but they are face-to-face. The conversation ends when Whitney informs Meredith that she had indeed sold bath bombs before. And with that, the matter is settled.
In an unexpected turn of events, Angie views this situation as another chance to rekindle her disputes with Meredith. One of the main allegations she’s bringing up includes claims about Angie’s ties to the Greek mafia and Meredith trying to take away her home. After Heather informs Angie that Meredith is still seeking apologies from everyone, Angie seizes this moment to seek apologies from Meredith herself. This exchange made me ponder about these women as authentic individuals. What exactly does an apology signify for them? At the core, what do they perceive an apology as accomplishing for their emotional well-being? In my opinion, it’s about establishing and maintaining power dynamics. Meredith views herself as a true businesswoman, her achievements and past successes unrelated to her ‘Housewives’ fame. She might consider Whitney as inferior in her eyes, someone who is less stylish and rooted in a more luxurious experience, as if her business success is simply cashing in on the ‘Housewives’ brand. Angie demands an apology because she needs to assert herself as a significant figure within this series – the betrayal by Monica had minimal impact on her, and last season she solidified herself more as comic relief. Angie pulls out a list of apologies she believes Meredith owes her from her handbag, but this doesn’t lead anywhere substantial because Lisa calls them over for the second part of the night – a dinner in a barn-like setting, which Salt Lake City seems to be filled with.
Ultimately, the podcast discussion ensues, and Lisa requests an apology from Whitney, to which Whitney queries what specific actions warrant an apology. Whitney argues that her comments were merely expressions of her feelings (“feelings”) and that Lisa is accusing her of dishonesty because her statements during this podcast don’t seem credible. Lisa responds with something akin to, that’s quite unhealed of you.
In a moment of unintentional disclosure, Whitney reveals she’d been aware of Lisa’s unhappiness with her, which pushes Lisa to breaking point. Perceiving this as a breach of trust from either Angie or Heather, the ones privy to her frustration with Whitney, Lisa becomes enraged. With this revelation, the argument intensifies into a full-blown outburst from Lisa. Screaming that she feels abandoned and betrayed, she confronts Angie K., who she humorously addresses as Angie K. even in her anger, since it was Angie who shared Whitney’s secret with her.
Initially, on this particular occasion, Lisa shatters her glass and challenges some falsehoods that Whitney had spread, such as the gossip that Lisa slept with someone to secure Utah Jazz courtside tickets. In response, Whitney, deeply engrossed in her healing process, maintains her composure by denying she is a liar. This sparks intense dialogue among the women, with all of them accusing Whitney of dishonesty. However, it seems more plausible that Whitney is being accused due to the attention it brings rather than addressing their genuine issues with each other, as this group appears to be equally prone to untruths. At this point in time, none of these women are particularly well-liked.
In a heated moment, Whitney declares to Lisa, “Are you ready to face ‘Mountainous’ Whitney? You can take a hike, Lisa Barlow.” With those words, she marches away, and Angie K. trails behind her.
Indeed, we’re making a strong beginning to the season, and this opening act offers but a glimpse into what season 5 has in store for us. It appears that despite putting the Reality Von Tease scandal behind them, these ladies will continue to find reasons to engage in disputes with one another.
