As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia upon witnessing the release of Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary Collection. However, it’s not just the sleek design reminiscent of the classic PlayStation 1 that stirs memories; it’s the familiar dance of supply and demand that’s left me with a bitter taste.
The PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary Set, a recent release, has become a hot commodity among resellers, with certain packages currently being marketed at prices five times their original value.
Sony is marking a significant milestone for its gaming brand by launching a series of hardware that emulates the vintage style of the original PlayStation 1. This includes both premium DualSense Edge controllers and standard DualSense, as well as the PlayStation Portal Remote Player, not forgetting the PlayStation 5 consoles themselves.
On September 26, the PlayStation 5 Pro bundle officially started accepting pre-orders, and it wasn’t long before they were all snapped up. It turns out that quite a few of these pre-orders have ended up in the hands of resellers who are already making substantial earnings from the secondary market.
As a gamer myself, I’ve got to admit that splurging on the PS5 Pro Bundle isn’t exactly pocket-friendly. It retails at a cool $999.99 and comes with goodies like the console itself, a DualSense controller, a DualSense Edge controller, a charging station for controllers, a stand, and other nifty accessories. That’s an extra $300 compared to the console alone, which has already taken some heat for its initial price tag of $699.99.
The reseller prices, however, make that look like a frugal purchase.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that even before official pre-orders were available, there were eBay listings asking for an eye-watering $10,000 for the PS5 Anniversary Bundle. Now, it seems that console pre-orders are being resold on eBay for up to a staggering $5,200, and I’ve seen dozens of these sell for roughly $4,000.
It’s not surprising that the cost of the bundle is rising steeply given that Sony is manufacturing just 12,300 units worldwide, a quantity symbolizing the original PlayStation 1’s debut on December 3, 1994.
Moreover, many commemorative items associated with anniversaries (that appear to be quite common) have experienced inflated prices due to reselling on markets that exploit scarcity.
For the assortment’s DualSense Edge and PlayStation Portal (usually priced at $199.99, with the anniversary edition costing $219.99), preorders are being sold at significantly higher than their original prices on various platforms.
On eBay, the high-end controller is typically priced between $400 and $500, while some have been sold for as much as $999.99. In comparison, the Remote Player is available for approximately $350 on average, with its highest price reaching $599.99.
To put it simply, despite the PS5 Digital Edition 30th Anniversary bundle having the same price as a standard PS5 Slim ($499.99), it’s being sold at inflated prices on eBay, reaching up to $2,000.
Although you can only purchase the PS5 Pro bundle directly from PlayStation’s official website, some related items like the DualSense controller can already be pre-ordered at participating retailers. Pre-orders for the DualSense have started, and pre-orders for the PS5 Digital bundle will begin on October 10th.
