Overwatch Mobile Is (Or Was) In Development - Report

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say, the prospect of a mobile version of Overwatch is as tantalizing as a freshly baked loot box. Overwatch is one of those games that has become an integral part of my gaming life, and the thought of taking it on-the-go would be nothing short of a dream come true!

It was rumored that Blizzard Entertainment had been working on a mobile adaptation of Overwatch in the past; however, it’s uncertain if this project is currently being actively developed. A recently published book about the renowned developer, called “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment,” casually mentions this information regarding the hero-shooter series.

In the book, author Jason Schreier mentions that Walter Kong played a significant role in Overwatch, particularly overseeing the launch of regular characters and updates for Overwatch 2. Additionally, he was involved in new projects related to Overwatch, including a possible mobile adaptation of the game franchise.

No formal statement has been made regarding a mobile version of the Overwatch series. Last year, Overwatch 2 was released as a free-to-play game on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. If a mobile edition does exist, it might replicate the same gaming experience designed for smartphones and tablets, or it could be an entirely new project. However, its existence is uncertain.

Schreier, who works as a reporter for Bloomberg, has just published a book detailing the 33-year journey of Blizzard Entertainment. Given that Microsoft recently took over Activision Blizzard about a year ago, it’s crucial to remember that the focus and direction of projects may have changed due to these recent transitions.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share an intriguing tidbit: Play Nice sheds light on the reasons behind Blizzard abandoning their project Titan. Interestingly, this MMO was shaping up to be two distinct experiences – one being an action-packed superhero game, while the other bore resemblance to The Sims. The challenge in merging these contrasting ideas seems to have led to Titan’s cancellation. However, elements of the action superhero aspect were later reworked for Overwatch.

This month, there will be an anime collaboration with Overwatch 2 and My Hero Academia, introducing five character skins. Previously, Overwatch 2 enjoyed its initial Game Pass advantages. For further details, explore TopMob’s Overwatch 2 review.
