New Sims 4 Life & Death Expansion Lets You Reap Souls, Plan Funerals, And Unmask The Grim Reaper

As a seasoned Sims player with over a decade of virtual life under my belt, I must say that The Sims 4 Life & Death expansion pack has me absolutely thrilled! Ever since I first donned the Grim Reaper’s hood way back when, I’ve dreamt of wielding a scythe and telling other Sims when to clock out for good. Now, my dreams have become a reality!

Perfect timing for the chilling autumn, The Sims 4 enthusiasts were granted a comprehensive sneak peek at the game’s eerie Life & Death expansion pack, unveiled by EA in a trailer. Unlike previous major expansions for The Sims 4, Life & Death stands out with its unique career options, as it enables players to assume the spectral role of the Grim Reaper himself.

However, punching in for a job that involves informing other Sims when it’s their time to retire isn’t the only unexpected aspect of the new expansion pack. The trailer showcases various quirky activities for Sims to participate in. From organizing a heartfelt funeral and executing the last wishes of the deceased, The Sims 4 Life & Death expansion pack offers players a range of amusing (and sometimes poignant) content to explore.

Previously stated, Sims characters can now take on the role of the Grim Reaper, a character that has been present since the inception of the game. This career choice transforms Sims into Grimsterns, apprentices under the old Grim who determine the destiny of those who have recently passed away. Yes, these characters will even be able to use a scythe. Exceptionally diligent Grimsterns who meet Grim’s “soul quota” may even earn the title of Employee of the Month!

Characters within the Sims game might develop a strong bond with Grim, which could lead to a unique opportunity to glimpse what’s beneath his exterior, though his facial features are humorously concealed using the same pixelated overlay as when Sims disrobe for a shower or swimming. The latest addition to the game also introduces career paths such as mortician and funeral director, and a fittingly eerie new world: Ravenwood, a chilling landscape consisting of three distinct neighborhoods where Sims can either reside or meet their end.

Besides introducing eerie new settings, ghostly attire and home decor, and the unique opportunity to work as the Grim Reaper, The Sims 4 Life & Death expansion pack introduces an innovative new gameplay mechanic: reincarnation. Deceased Sims can return to life by achieving the Soul’s Journey aspiration. Sims pursuing this aspiration will encounter various tasks, from emotionally moving (reconnecting with lost loved ones in the afterlife) to thrilling (scaring the wits out of living Sims for fun). Completing the Soul’s Journey aspiration rewards Sims with the “Burning Soul” trait, allowing them to come back from the dead without needing to prepare a dish of Ambrosia or perform a grovel at Grim’s feet with a Death Flower.

The Life & Death expansion pack for The Sims 4, priced at $40 USD, is scheduled to launch on both consoles and PCs from October 31. A gameplay trailer will be unveiled on October 17. If you buy the game before December 12, you’ll get the Mournful Mementos Digital Content Set as a bonus, which comes with these items:

  • Lasting Legacy Family Portrait
  • Mournful Melodies Music Box
  • Plumed Elegance Mask
