New ‘Godzilla’ Movie From ‘Godzilla Minus One’ Director Greenlit by Toho

As a movie buff with a penchant for international cinema, I must admit that the upcoming “Godzilla” movie, directed by the acclaimed Takashi Yamazaki, has piqued my interest. Having grown up on the classics of Japanese cinema and being particularly fond of Godzilla, I am thrilled to see a new installment from Toho.

Godzilla is stomping its way back to the big screen.

The production of a fresh “Godzilla” film, helmed by the director behind the critically acclaimed Japanese Oscar-winner from last year titled “Godzilla Minus One,” has been formally given the go-ahead. Toho, the renowned Japanese entertainment company and originator of Godzilla, confirmed this news on Friday.

Takashi Yamazaki, the creator of the unexpected success “Godzilla Minus One,” is coming back for the upcoming movie. Once more, he will be responsible for the visual effects, following his win of the Academy Award for outstanding visual effects in 2023.

“Godzilla Minus One” – A Standalone Japanese Godzilla Film

It’s uncertain if the upcoming film serves as a direct follow-up to “Godzilla Minus One,” but it does leave us hanging with the destructive lizard’s storyline. After Godzilla has been vanquished, we see that a fragment of the monster is regenerating at the ocean floor. Additionally, there’s an enigma surrounding Noriko Ōishi, Shikishima’s girlfriend, who managed to survive an encounter with Godzilla and now bears an unusual black mark on her neck.

The movie ‘Godzilla Minus One’ received praise for its impressive special effects, particularly in depicting the monster and its devastation, all achieved on a budget of approximately $15 million. This low-budget production ultimately earned an astounding $116 million globally, making it the highest-grossing Japanese ‘Godzilla’ film to date.
