As a lifelong fan of Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming animated series “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” on Netflix! From the moment I first played the original game back in 1996, I was hooked. Over the years, I’ve followed Lara’s adventures through every twist and turn, from the Sega Saturn to the latest installments.
Returning to our screens, Lara Croft makes an appearance once more! In the recently released trailer for Netflix’s animated series “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” Hayley Atwell lends her voice to the renowned archaeologist, embarking on a fresh journey within the universe of the popular video game franchise.
“The story in ‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’ continues after the events depicted in the ‘Survivor’ trilogy of video games (including ‘Tomb Raider’, ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’, and ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’). This time, Lara embarks on another thrilling adventure to unravel more ancient secrets across the globe.”
According to the show’s summary: “After the ‘Survivor’ series, Lara Croft has decided to go on solitary and risky journeys. However, she is compelled to return home when a precious and potent Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief who shares a mysterious link with her. This leads her on a global adventure, exploring forgotten tombs, where she will be challenged to discover her true identity, and make a choice about the type of hero she aspires to be.”
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about the voice talent assembled for the animated series. Alongside Alicia Atwell portraying Lara Croft, we have Allen Maldonado bringing Zip to life, and Earl Baylon reprising his role from the “Tomb Raider” video game series as Jonah.
The classic “Tomb Raider” video game debuted in 1996 on the Sega Saturn, a creation of developers Core Design and Aspyr. By 1997, it had sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide. As we stand in 2024, a total of 20 “Tomb Raider” games have been launched.
In my humble opinion, the captivating video game “Tomb Raider” transformed into an action-packed film series known as the “Tomb Raider” franchise, with none other than Angelina Jolie portraying the iconic Lara Croft in its initial installments. More recently, Alicia Vikander stepped into the role.
Tasha Huo (known for “The Witcher: Blood Origin” and “Red Sonja”) is serving as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer for “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” working alongside Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson, Jacob Robinson, Dallas Dickinson, Noah Hughes, Howard Bliss, Jen Chambers, and Brad Graeber in these roles as well.
The series originates from Legendary Television, Crystal Dynamics, Powerhouse Animation, dj2 Entertainment, and Tractor Pants Studios.
With the surge in popularity of video game adaptations following the successes of HBO’s “The Last of Us” and Amazon’s “Fallout,” the legendary Tomb Raider franchise is tapping into this trend by developing multiple new projects. These include an animated series on Netflix, a live-action version of Tomb Raider on Amazon produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and even a video game based on the IP.
