MTG Leaks – Four Marvel Superheroes Potentially Coming Out

As a long-time Magic: The Gathering enthusiast with over two decades of card-slinging under my belt, I must say the recent leaks of potential Marvel Universe collaborations have got me more excited than a kid in a candy store! Growing up on a steady diet of Marvel comics and MTG cards, these two universes were always destined to collide in my wildest dreams.

The collaboration between MTG (Magic: The Gathering) and Marvel Universe, set for release in 2025, promises an even more captivating experience within Universes Beyond. When Wizards of the Coast unveiled their plans to officially partner with Marvel, it was a surprise that had everyone intrigued – a dream collaboration many didn’t think would happen so soon! Now, it looks like we might encounter some iconic Marvel superheroes in-game sooner than anticipated.

Recently, images of four cards featuring renowned Marvel superheroes have surfaced online. It’s important to note that neither Wizards nor Marvel have confirmed any early collaboration for this year. Nevertheless, some members within the Magic: The Gathering community on Reddit speculate these cards could be authentic. Preliminary evidence suggests these four heroes may debut through a Secret Lair product.

Regardless of whether the cards are authentic or not, our only course of action is to stay patient until there’s an official statement from both Wizards and Marvel.

Marvel Superheroes Coming to MTG

Here’s a full list of all four Marvel cards potentially coming to MTG.

Black Panther, Wakandan KingMTG Leaks – Four Marvel Superheroes Potentially Coming Out

The character known as the Black Panther, who rules over Wakanda, is a legendary creature that costs two resources – one green and one white. This character has an ability called First Strike.

Scan Your Domain – Whenever a Black Panther or another creature you own arrives, place a strength-enhancing counter on a land you control.

Transfer all +1/+1 counters from a land you control to a chosen creature: [If any counters are moved in this manner, you will receive that amount of life and draw a card.]

As a gamer, I can say that having Black Panther in my deck really ramps up the power of both him and all other creatures. He’s an exceptional heavy hitter! What makes this even sweeter is that the Wakandan King is relatively affordable to deploy as a commander, making it easy for me to reuse him whenever I need to. That means opponents are going to have a tough time handling my Black Panther-controlled gameboard during the initial turns of the game.

Captain America, First AvengerMTG Leaks – Four Marvel Superheroes Potentially Coming Out

Captain America, the First Avenger, is a unique and powerful legendary character, represented by three colors – red, white, and blue.

Discard one card (number 3), Detach a piece of equipment belonging to Captain America, causing him to deal damage that’s the mana value of the equipment split among one, two, or three opponents as you decide.

At the start of your turn during battle, you can connect one Equipment you’re controlling with Captain America as a target.

If the card is authentic, Wizards of the Coast has skillfully depicted Captain America’s combative style. The objects he hurls at certain targets will function as his shield, and they’ll return to him at the start of the combat phase, appearing as though his shield is boomeranging back to him.

Choosing Captain America as their commander will probably lead players to construct a Voltron-style deck. This type of deck aims to exploit Captain America’s Throw ability to its fullest, by swiftly outfitting him with numerous artifact equipment pieces as quickly as possible.

Iron Man, Titan of InnovationMTG Leaks – Four Marvel Superheroes Potentially Coming Out

The Legendary Artifact Creature known as Iron Man, Master of Invention costs five (three common, one blue, and one red), has the abilities to Fly and Attack immediately when it enters the battlefield.

If Iron Man attacks, generate a Treasure token. You can choose to discard a non-creature artifact you control. If you do so, search your deck for an artifact card whose total mana cost is one more than the sacrificed artifact’s mana cost, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle your library.

Among the four Marvel cards for MTG, Iron Man is perceived as the least impressive option. Given his abilities, it’s reasonable to expect that if players make him the deck’s leader, a significant portion of the deck will consist of artifacts. Consequently, while Iron Man can be an essential element in a deck, he’s not an effective choice as a commander due to his limitations.

Wolverine, Best There IsMTG Leaks – Four Marvel Superheroes Potentially Coming Out

Wolverine, Best There Is is a three-cost (one generic, one red, and one green) legendary creature.

Unrivaled Lethality – Double all damage Wolverine would deal.

At the close of every turn phase, if Wolverine inflicted damage on another being during that turn, add a strength and toughness boost counter (+1/+1) onto him.

Next turn, if Wolverine is destroyed, tap him instead, take him out of combat, and fully restore his health.

Considering each hero’s individual strength, it appears Wolverine stands out as the most potent among the four superheroes, primarily due to his Unrivaled Lethality skill. The objective for players should be to maximize the number of +1/+1 counters on Wolverine, enhancing his effectiveness in combat. To achieve this, a player’s deck should include spells that prompt Wolverine to engage with other creatures, even outside of their turn. Some spells may directly provide counters or double the counters Wolverine receives.

From the unique abilities of each character, Black Panther appears to hold the most promise for becoming the strongest commander among the four, given their potential synergies. If raw power is the focus, Wolverine seems to be the most potent. Captain America, however, offers a balanced approach and could pose a significant threat if players construct his deck effectively. As for Iron Man, it remains to be seen how creatively the gaming community will integrate him into their decks.
