‘Maria’ Trailer: Angelina Jolie Transforms Into Opera Singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Best Actress Oscar Contender

As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the cinematic landscapes of time and space, I must say that the upcoming biopic “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie, has piqued my interest immensely. Having had the privilege to immerse myself in both opera’s grandeur and cinema’s magic, I eagerly anticipate this unique fusion of the two art forms.

Angelina Jolie portrays opera legend Maria Callas in the initial teaser for the biopic “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larraín. Netflix unveiled the first sneak peek of this critically acclaimed film, which made its debut at the Venice Film Festival and was met with an extended eight-minute applause, potentially placing Jolie and the production in contention for awards.

The actor portrays the character of Maria Callas, a Greek soprano who was born in America and passed away at 53 due to a heart attack. The movie “Maria” is set to depict her life as a singer, as hinted by the trailer that spans across time. Joining Angelina Jolie in this cast are actors like Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Haluk Bilginer, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, Jeremy Wheeler, and Rebecka Johnston.

The film “Maria” is helmed by director Pablo Larraín (previously known as “El Conde”), who also collaborated with screenwriter Steven Knight, the creator of “Peaky Blinders”. They had previously worked together on the Princess Diana feature film “Spencer”, which garnered an Oscar nomination for its lead actress Kristen Stewart. Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski, Lorenzo Mieli and Juan de Dios Larraín (Pablo’s brother) serve as producers for this project.

Expressing great excitement, director Pablo Larraín once stated about his upcoming project, ‘It’s long been a cherished dream to merge my deepest passions – cinema and opera.’ He added, ‘Working with Angelina Jolie, an exceptionally daring and inquisitive artist, presents a captivating chance. This collaboration is truly a blessing.’

Previously, she expressed that she deeply values her duty towards Maria’s life and heritage, promising to contribute all she has to meet this challenge. She also mentioned that working with director Pablo Larraín, whom she admires greatly, and screenwriter Steven Knight on telling more of Maria’s story is a dream come true for her.

Collaborating with director Larraín, production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas strived to blend the aesthetic mood of the era and the dreamlike qualities of the musical scenes for the movie “Maria”. Principal photography commenced in Budapest during October 2023, with further filming taking place in Paris, Greece, and Milan.
