As a long-time Magic: The Gathering enthusiast with a collection that spans over two decades, I can confidently say that the upcoming changes and releases have me more excited than ever before!
Over the past several months, Magic: The Gathering has experienced some unusual circumstances, and significant transformations are underway that are expected to shape the direction of the game for many years to come.
The Gathering will be compatible with all game formats, including Standard. Previously, these expansions were separated for different play formats. This is a significant shift from the current system.
If you’re unfamiliar, Universes Beyond incorporates characters and worlds from franchises beyond the Magic: The Gathering universe. Over time, this expansion has included a wide range of properties such as Fallout and Lord of the Rings, with the latter providing the basis for the sought-after, exclusive One Ring card.
In November, the rollout of Foundations forms a significant aspect of the company’s strategies, guiding us towards at least 2029. Given the diverse audience Wizards of the Coast aims to cater to, they will unveil merely three Multiverse sets annually.
In summary, there are six new Standard-compatible sets being released, consisting of three Multiverse sets and three Universes Beyond collections. As MagicCon is now in full swing, here’s an overview of the confirmed sets, along with some insights shared during a private media briefing by the development team.
Innistrad: Remastered (January 24)
The shift towards Gothic styles in the early 2010s was an intriguing era, and many remarkable concepts may have been overlooked. Innistrad: Remastered highlights it again, featuring a standout “Headliner” card from a collector’s booster box – in this instance, a limited-edition movie poster of Edgar Markov.
Aetherdrift (February 14)
In simpler terms, Aetherdrift combines the exhilarating motorcycle racing from Tron and the post-apocalyptic madness of Mad Max, making it an exciting TCG collection. If this doesn’t entice you, we’re not sure what else would! The Aether Spark theme adds an extra layer of intrigue to Aetherdrift, connecting it more deeply with the overall game story.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm (April 11)
Returning to the plane of Tarkir is an appealing prospect for Magic players, and the reappearance of old characters and beasts adds to its allure. The game’s clan-based mechanics and the introduction of formidable new dragons are sure to draw in longtime MTG enthusiasts.
Final Fantasy (June 13)
As a diehard fan of Final Fantasy, I can’t help but feel the anticipation building for the upcoming Universes Beyond set. It’s clear that the artists have been working closely on this project, and it seems like their collaboration has reached unprecedented depths. I can hardly wait to see what they’ve come up with!
Mark Rosewater, the head designer, confirmed that the artwork in this collection will be a blend of pieces from various artists across the Magic franchise, iconic illustrations by legendary Final Fantasy artists, and fresh, stunning creations exclusive to this set.
Edge of Eternities (August 1)
In terms of theme, Edge of Eternities stands out as one of the most captivating sets in recent memory. This latest expansion transports players into uncharted territories – the Solthera system – offering a fresh exploration beyond the familiar multiverse. Notably, Tezzeret reappears after a lengthy hiatus, making his comeback for the first time since the Hour of Devastation set in 2017.
Marvel’s Spider-Man (TBA 2025)
Earlier confirmed at NYCC, Spider-Man will be the initial comprehensive crossover project by Marvel and Wizards of the Coast. As of now, we don’t have a specific launch date, but Autumn seems to be the probable season for this eagerly awaited debut.
Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants (TBA 2025)
Among all the anticipated drops, the beloved spongy character is set to appear in Magic: The Gathering through a Secret Lair collaboration. As of now, we don’t have many specifics about this collection, but let’s hope for a cameo from Squidward the Handsome!
