‘Magic: The Gathering’ Netflix Series Taps Terry Matalas as New Showrunner

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for deciphering the intricacies of the television landscape, I must confess that the news about the “Magic: The Gathering” animated series at Netflix under Terry Matalas‘ guidance has piqued my interest. Given his impressive resume, which spans from “Star Trek: Picard” to “12 Monkeys”, and his recent appointment as showrunner for the Marvel-Disney+ Vision series starring Paul Bettany, I have high hopes that this project will not only materialize but also prove to be a captivating addition to Netflix’s roster.

The “Magic: The Gathering” animated series, which has been in development for some time at Netflix, is progressing under a fresh leadership as a new showrunner takes charge.

During Netflix’s Geeked Week, it was announced that Terry Matalas has been appointed as the showrunner for the upcoming series. Production on this fresh take is currently underway. The series is a collaborative effort between Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast, with specific plot details about this new version being kept confidential.

More recently, there’s been a lot of talk that the show won’t continue on Netflix. The series was initially slated for production in 2019 under the Russo brothers, known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Jeff Kline took over as executive producer and creative head in 2021 following the departure of the Russos due to creative disagreements. Brandon Routh was later announced as the voice actor for the main character.

After that point, there’s been scarcely any update regarding the series. Routh lately expressed his viewpoint that the show seems to be “off the table” now, but it continues to reside on Netflix under Matalas’ management.

This year, Matalas has secured a high-profile TV role, as reported exclusively by EbMaster in May. He is slated to be the showrunner for Marvel’s Disney+ Vision series starring Paul Bettany. Matalas garnered acclaim for his work on the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” released in 2023, which brought together the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Beyond this, he is recognized for creating and overseeing the Syfy series “12 Monkeys,” which spanned four seasons. His other projects include rebooting CBS’s “MacGyver,” producing “Nightflyers,” “Nikita,” “Terra Nova,” and “Star Trek: Enterprise.

He is repped by CAA and Anonymous Content.

The “Magic: The Gathering” card game on tabletop was developed by Richard Garfield and made available to the public for the first time in 1993. Since its inception, it has birthed a digital version, an esports league, comics, and a popular novel, all of which have been widely accepted. It has been distributed across various regions, including over 70 countries, and is currently available in 11 languages.
