Kelsey Grammer’s ‘Frasier’ Co-Star Got Cancer Amid Filming and Feared the Network Would Fire Her; He Called to Say Otherwise: ‘This Is Your Family. You’re Not Getting Fired’

As a fan who deeply admires resilience and compassion, I am profoundly moved by Toks Olagundoye’s story. Her journey through breast cancer during the filming of “Frasier” revival is nothing short of inspiring. It’s heartwarming to see such a strong bond within the cast, with Kelsey Grammar going out of his way to reassure her and ensure her role remained intact.

In a recent chat on “The Kelly Clarkson Show”, Toks Olagundoye, an actor on the revival of “Frasier”, shared that Kelsey Grammar, her co-star and leading man, reached out to her personally during the making of the first season. This call came as a reassurance that she wouldn’t be dismissed from the show or have her role reduced, despite her cancer diagnosis. Olagundoye felt certain she would be let go from “Frasier” after needing a double mastectomy, having only filmed three episodes due to her illness.

Olagundoye stated that she’s never been part of a TV family quite like the ‘Frasier’ cast, as they are truly exceptional individuals. It was truly enjoyable to spend time with them,” (paraphrased)

46-year-old actress Olagundoye was initially diagnosed with stage 0 triple negative breast cancer, but it had advanced to stage 1 by the time she was informed that surgery would be required. Shortly before “Frasier” began filming, she underwent three operations followed by chemotherapy. During the production of “Frasier,” she also opted for a double mastectomy.

Olagundoye recalled saying to the show’s producers, ‘If you must let me go, consider me as a recurring character instead.’ The producers promised she wouldn’t be dismissed. Still, the actor anticipated a call from the network and commented, ‘I am convinced they will fire me any moment.’

As a film enthusiast, when it became apparent that Kelsey was about to part ways with us, my initial thought was, “Yep, this is it, getting the boot, here and now.” He displayed raw emotion, not fully grasping my predicament, and said, “I understand how actors think. I want you to know this is your family; you’re not being fired. We’ll do whatever it takes to make you feel at ease.” His words are etched in my memory, “You’re going to be overjoyed after this. Everything will turn out alright.

In October 2023, Olagundoye appeared in a revival of the “Frasier” series, where she played Professor Olivia Finch, head of Harvard University’s psychology department. The first season was available for streaming on Paramount+. A second season was premiered in September 2024.

On “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” the afternoon host unexpectedly played a video message for Olagundoye, which had been recorded by none other than Grammer himself.

Grammer expressed his admiration for you being part of this show and your dedication to increasing awareness and donations towards breast cancer. He also mentioned that he’s always appreciated and enjoyed spending time with you during your journey. In the clip, he also congratulated you on overcoming your challenges. He further stated that he is profoundly grateful for you personally,” (In a more conversational tone)
