Joker Director Says He Probably Won't Make Another DC Movie

As a long-time fan of Todd Phillips and his groundbreaking work in Hollywood, I must admit that I was initially disappointed to hear about his reluctance to return for another DC movie after Joker: Folie à Deux. Having witnessed the sheer brilliance he brought to the Joker franchise with the first film, I had hoped for more from this enigmatic director. However, his decision to move on from the DC Universe, at least for now, feels like a chapter closing in my own cinematic journey.

Todd Phillips, the director behind the blockbuster hit Joker, has announced a sequel titled Joker: Folie à Deux to be released on October 4th. However, if you’re hoping for more Joker or DC movies from him in the future, it might be best not to hold your breath.

Responding to The Hollywood Reporter’s query about a possible standalone film for Lady Gaga’s character Harley, Phillips shared he currently holds no intentions for a standalone movie for Harley, nor any other DC Universe films.

As a fan, I have to say that the direction this movie seems to be taking doesn’t quite resonate with me. For me, my experience within the DC Universe has been limited to those two films.

Earlier on, Phillips shared with Variety that he enjoyed working on the two Joker films, but emphasized that they’ve essentially explored all they intended to within this universe. Consequently, it’s unlikely that Phillips will rejoin for Joker 3 or any other DC movie, though it’s always possible that plans might shift in the future.

According to predictions, the upcoming film “Joker: Folie à Deux,” set to release on October 4, is expected to have a massive debut. However, it’s unlikely to surpass the remarkable pace of the original film from 2019 in terms of box office records. The movie is projected to earn over $70 million just in North America during its first weekend in early October. This would be significantly less than the $96.2 million earned by the original Joker domestically during its opening weekend in 2019.

In the sequel titled “Joker: Mad Love,” Joaquin Phoenix once again steps into the role of Joker, a part that earned him an Oscar in the original movie. Lady Gaga enters the scene as Harley, while Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Steve Coogan are also part of the cast. Additionally, Zazie Beetz reappears in her character from the first film.

Earlier this month, the movie made its debut at the Venice Film Festival, and the responses from critics were as varied as the mixed reactions to the initial film.
