As a seasoned gamer and parent of two teenagers who are avid comic book fans, I can attest to the evolving nature of superhero stories. The Joker has certainly evolved from his cartoonish roots to become a complex character in gritty crime dramas, as seen in the new movie, Joker 2.
Although “Joker 2” may seem like a typical comic book film, it’s important to note that the mischievous actions of the Joker are not intended for young viewers, as evident by the mature rating given to the upcoming movie.
Over time, superheroes and supervillains have evolved from being portrayed as lighthearted and low-risk characters in cartoons to complex and realistic figures in crime dramas. With each new portrayal of the Joker, he becomes increasingly violent and cunning, making his recent movies potentially unsuitable for all audiences.
In the movie “Joker: Folie à Deux,” featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Harley Quinn enters the scene in a fresh take on Gotham City. As Arthur Fleck’s trial unfolds, the citizens of Gotham start to rise up, inspired by ideals from their newfound hero.
But Joker 2 is a musical, right? Surely it can’t be that bad? Here’s everything you need to know about the age rating of the drama, including parental guidance and what to expect.
What is the Joker 2 age rating?
In the United States, the Motion Picture Association (MPAA) has given Joker 2 an R rating due to its intense violence, frequent use of strong language, a touch of sexual content, and fleeting instances of graphic nudity.
According to the MPAA’s guidelines for the R rating, it is recommended that parents preview films before attending with their children who are below the age of 17. In other words, those under 17 years old may not be allowed entry unless accompanied by an adult.
In the United Kingdom, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has assigned a 15-rating to Joker 2, indicating it contains intense violence, strong language, and occasional sexual content. Therefore, this film is not suitable for viewers under the age of 15 to watch in cinemas.
Joker 2 won’t be suitable for young children
Parents have the final say in deciding if their kids should watch Joker 2, but typically, it’s not a film suitable for younger audiences.
In the initial film, the setting for Joker is a particularly violent depiction of Gotham City. The character Arthur Fleck is presented as a menacing figure who carries out gruesome murders. While the specifics about the violence or methods of killing in Joker 2 have not been revealed, it’s reasonable to expect that it will follow a similar pattern, if not even more intense.
Keeping this thought in your head, it would be wise for parents to preview the movie first, or else they might want to postpone showing it to children who are still quite young.
If you’re on the hunt for a kid-friendly take on the Batman universe, give “The LEGO Batman Movie” or “Batman: The Animated Series” a try!
