Joe Manganiello shares dark inspiration for his One Piece character

As a lifelong One Piece fan who has followed the manga since its inception and eagerly awaited every new development, I find Joe Manganiello‘s interpretation of Sir Crocodile truly captivating. His deep understanding of the character’s complexities and nuances is evident in his insightful words, and it’s clear that he’s put a lot of thought into bringing Crocodile to life on screen.

Actor Joe Manganiello, known for playing Sir Crocodile in Netflix’s One Piece Season 2, discusses his take on the character and the methods he employs to ready himself for this role.

In the second live-action series of One Piece, they are adapting the Alabasta Saga, excluding the Alabasta Arc. This means we’ll witness the operations of Baroque Works in the upcoming season, featuring key members such as Mr. 0 (also known as Sir Crocodile) and Miss All-Sunday (Nico Robin).

Following the announcement that Manganiello and Lera Abova would play the beloved roles, they both sat for a quick chat to discuss their characters.

During a discussion about his methodology for crafting the famous One Piece antagonist, Manganiello shared that he keeps multiple variations of Crocodile on hand while delving into the source material, eventually unveiling his unique interpretation of the character.

The One Piece actor emphasized, “For me, authenticity is crucial, and it becomes more important when portraying a character labeled as ‘villainous.’ However, I view these characters simply as individuals with unique goals and motivations that set them apart from others.

I can’t contain my excitement! Jump aboard the Grand Line with me as we delve into the thrilling world of One Piece Live Action in its second season! He further clarified: “But what I found, he’s this flip side of the coin from Luffy. Potentially. He represents this dark potential future for Luffy. If he’s affected or allows the trauma of defeat to infect him the way it was for [Crocodile].

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but sense a lingering desire within Crocodile that seems to yearn for others to endure the pain he experienced post-Whitebeard, or grapple with the disillusionment of not claiming the title of Pirate King and relinquishing it.

He humorously added, “Naturally, I don’t trust my friends,” followed by a light-hearted “apologies” directed towards Abova.

Many One Piece fans appreciated Manganiello’s portrayal of Crocodile, praising him for capturing the intricacies of the character. As one fan put it on X, “The little giggle at the end shows his enthusiasm for the role. I find it fantastic, man.

“I trust in this man. Season 2 will be peak,” chimed in another.

In 2025, Netflix will make available Season 2 of One Piece. Before that, take a peek at Chopper in the live-action series. If you’re an enthusiast of the manga, don’t miss our guide on One Piece Chapter 1128.
